LostWinds Now Transferable to Wii U

The WiiWare launch title is no longer stranded in last gen.

LostWinds, a launch title for the WiiWare service in Western territories, can now be transferred to the Wii U.

An update allowing the transfer was issued only last week, despite LostWinds’ long-known status as the most prominent digital-only Wii game players have been unable to transfer to Wii U since the system’s 2012 launch. Even then, a fix was reported to be in the works.

Players will have to go through the standard System Transfer process in order to get the game onto the Wii U, so those hoping to move the title over to their current systems will need to dust off their Wii hardware and let the Pikmin get to work.

LostWinds was released in May 2008 to generally high praise, and a sequel of similar acclaim was issued the following year. Series developer Frontier Developments’ most recent output on a Nintendo platform was Coaster Crazy Deluxe for the Wii U.

So it's still not available on the Wii shop channel on Wii U, huh.

Still pretty convoluted.

So glad that this finally happened. Lost Winds is a great game and it's wonderful to have everything finally moved onto a single console instead of bouncing back and forth.

Now if only we'd get another sequel to move the story along further...
;D

Is this assumption? I see it listed (in North America) without any issue in the Wii Shop Channel.

You only need to use the transfer tool if you want to move the license onto your Wii U and download the game for free.  If you just want to go the Wii Shop Channel and buy the game that should be ok.

I only played the sequel, but it was one of my favourite WiiWare games. I'd love to see another one, but I think that company went on to do things like Kinectimals for Microsoft.

how the hell are you supposed to do this if you already transfered everything else but this one game? I did exactly that from my old wii (which is now gamestop's) and this game was not transfered. So now what? Guess that game is lost to the void

No, it's not lost. You just do the transfer a second time.

It won't affect the games you've already transfered.

Can I still get it since I already got rid of my old wii? Do I need to contact Nintendo?

If you've sold your old Wii console, then you are most likely out of luck. In that case, there is no way to retrieve the license from that hardware and move it to your Wii U console.  Call customer service and make your case. They can give you the game... but (as far as I know) have no obligation to do so.

Although we kept our old Wii console and had no issue doing the second transfer to move LostWinds over, I can understand why most people would have sold or gotten rid of the old console. That was kind of the point of transferring content to your Wii U in the first place, right?
