I feel like 8 bucks is too high for SNES games. But im sure i'll pay up when its for games that i havent bought a million times already.

Leo13April 26, 2013

I wish I could say you're right that an SNES game isn't worth $8, but since I'm buying Super Mario World right after work I guess I really can't say that

Would you rather pay hundreds for something like Earthbound?

NeoThunderApril 26, 2013

I was just asking about this in the update thread, I guess my question is answered now

Also, remember not to buy games that are coming out later for 30 cents as part of their 30th anniversary

I'll let you know when I CAN BUY EARTHBOUND.  Till that point your argument in moot.  That is an exception not a rule.

Finally an adjustment for screen size in settings.  I can see the entire Warawara Plazza for once!

I think egg face was only making a point that they didn't see enough value in many SNES games to warrant paying $8 for them.

I personally think virtual console games should have a sliding scale determined by the game makers.

CaterkillerMatthew Osborne, Contributing WriterApril 26, 2013

8 bucks is good for me. I even updated my Super Mario World with $1.50 and happy to do it.

But man are we really going to have to sit and wait for everything again? That's just lame. Though 2 days ago I transferred games over from 2 Wii's and finally see the wiimode is easy and seamless so waiting for games isn't such a big deal at all if you already have them. Only difference is I would like the option to play on the gamepad from time to time and talk about it in miiverse.

I'm kind of mad at myself for not getting DKC3 when I had the chance. I always had weird feelings for that game but now I wonder if they are as bad as I believe them to be. Oh well, guess I can wait another year or so.

Oh hey, Europe got the option to connect their Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles VC titles. We never got that did we, and why?!

I did pick it up on VC and I enjoyed it, but I was also underwhelmed. Maybe it's because I didn't play it as kid (I only owned the first two games in the series), or maybe it's because I hate Baby Kong, but I felt like DKC3 was significantly weaker than the previous two entries. DKC3 did have some interesting levels and I thought the last boss was actually kind of fun, but for me it really didn't have the consistency of DKC 1 & 2.

Do we know yet why DKC3 was taken down?

eggface123April 26, 2013

Ill happily pay 8 bucks for earthbound. Like I said, but not for a bunch of games ive bought before. :(

eggface123April 26, 2013

I realize you can upgrade from the wii for a dollar. Cant upgrade from a cart or 3ds though. So they already have my money.

Pixelated PixiesApril 26, 2013

Btw, can someone please explain how the upgrading process works? Do you need to have migrated your Wii games over the Wii U in order to get the discounted price? Or do you have the option to keep them on your Wii and still benefit from the reduced price point?

I'm pretty sure you need to have copied the licenses over. Since it's not based on an account, the Wii U has no way of knowing you purchased them before unless you transferred them to it.

If you transferred your virtual console library to your Wii U's Wii mode, then it'll show as a $1.50 upgrade price (for SNES) when selecting it from the Eshop.  Then it'll download to the Wii u menu after purchase.

You can't use Wii Points to upgrade, can you? I'm gonna be stuck with these points forever...

Pixelated PixiesApril 26, 2013

Ah, right. Thanks for the info.

You could always gift me Mega Man 3 so I can play and talk about it for Retroactive, LOL.

I won't upgrade all of my VC games, at least right away. I will upgrade Super Mario World though since I love it (I still own the SNES cartridge, plus I bought Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 and I bought it on the Wii Virtual Console). My only gripe is that upgrading a game wipes out its gamesave.

LudicrousDa3veApril 26, 2013

There isn't anything in this lineup I'm interested in buying, but there are quite a few I'm looking forward to upgrading, not to mention what "new" games get put on the service in the future.

AVApril 26, 2013

apple sort of ruined the pricing structure didn't they?

$8 is fine for one of the best 2D mario games of all time that looks great and sounds great and has great controls. I have it on GBA but i double dipped to see it on my HDTV. I didn't buy it before on Wii VC because I had the GBA game but something about playing this with HDMI and pure digital signal turned me on and being able to play on gamepad without need for any classic controllers is nice.

With all the ingame ads, micro transactions and crappy controls of phone games i feel that VC is still a very good deal.

I do think Nintendo needs to ditch this stupid rigid pricing. I'm sorry but DK Jr. is not worth $5 it has 4 levels that repeat, thats should remain .30 game forever. I know its subjective and nintendo likes uniformity but different games should have different prices.

I know it seems like i'm contradicting myself but I see that some games have more value than others and some classics are worthwhile and others are not ' full price ' material.

AVApril 26, 2013

Panorama View is a fun cool little video series but Nintendo should seriously pay up the money for HD quality for next set of videos and consider having one ap to house everything.

I know its a silly idea but I don't know if I'll ever visit some of those places so having a video tour like this is nice distraction. I totally like the idea of mario expanding this to game environments and having peaches castle or something else.

BlackNMild2k1April 26, 2013

I've gone over pricing of VC games many times and won't really do it again, but these prices are too high for games that are 20-30+ years old and have long since paid for themselves.

It's on sale or no buy for me.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorApril 26, 2013

I wonder if third parties will be given the freedom with their VC titles that they have with their original eShop works.

I also wonder how Club Nintendo coins work for upgrades. :D

classicgamerApril 26, 2013

Why do only people from japan get the good games And where is Super Ghouls'n Ghosts for the VC in America...Come on Nintendo Give us the awesome game we need!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do upgraded games have the ability to create save states? I'd pay the fee to have a shot at actually beating half the games I bought on the Wii virtual console.

IIRC, they did say that save states were one of the perks to the Wii U version of Virtual Console games.

Save states? No. Save state? Yes. Only one at a time per game.

leahsdadApril 27, 2013

On a slightly different subject, holy crap, am I the only one who downloaded Super Mario World and thinks it looks better on my HDTV than in my 15 year old dreams?  Seriously, it looks FANTASTIC.  Much, much better than it did on the same TV from my Wii.  I'm not the only one noticing this, am I?  I was kind of expecting this to look accurate by stretchy, like on my Wii.  I am blown away by this.

LudicrousDa3veApril 27, 2013

The image quality seriously is improved. Played Punch Out!! on Wii VC, then Wii U. The difference is there. I'd also note, that the single save state is, I believe, one per user. I haven't double checked, but my kids play the hell out of Kirby's Adventure, and my save state is intact on my profile.

Edit: You do get a save state for each user; it also seems that having a present save state dramatically effects the time it takes the console to boot up the game.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorApril 27, 2013

Dear Nintendo:

Customized Control Schemes for VC games.  Please.

Thank you.

Are they shared across all games of that system? I could see them having a custom default for a system and then custom for each game (because it would be really annoying to have to edit every single game). The button assignment interface is super-clunky already, which doesn't make any sense given that the touch screen should make it super easy and intuitive.

Oof, only one? I feel like I'm going to need five to make it through Star Tropics or Blaster Master.
