The Big N believes SmartGlass and Apple TV Airplay can't do everything the Wii U does.

Nintendo made several comments during the E3 2012 Analysts meeting regarding their competitors and how they view the video game marketplace.

Regarding Xbox SmartGlass, revealed during the Microsoft E3 Media Briefing, Nintendo stated that the upcoming Xbox 360 feature would only be able to offer a small facet of what Nintendo's own Wii U is capable of. With regards to both Xbox SmartGlass and Apple TV Airplay, Nintendo commented that Wii U is the only solution which currently provides a second screen seamlessly integrated into the television. The Wii U was made specifically to deal with latency, a problem that Nintendo believes Sony and Microsoft will have issues with.

Nintendo also mentioned that they won't be getting into a bidding war with Microsoft to get exclusive franchise support from third parties. Rather, Nintendo believes they can leverage support from the existing 190 million Wii Remotes and 45 million Wii Balance Boards already in circulation from the Wii installed base.

Are they going to come to life and start holding 3rd Parties hostage?

Also I'm getting mixed messages because I have yet to see Nintendo Announce Blu-Ray Playback support or DLNA Support.  That already loss them my living room.

Latency may very well be a problem, but there's something to be said for Microsoft's Smart Glass as well. The fact that it could potentially support devices which are technologically more advanced than the Wii U gamepad is one such advantage. If you were using an ipad for instance you could be using multi-touch along with 'pinch' and 'spin' movements in a way that the Gamepad is incapable of doing.

I would bet the house that (relatively) no gamers or developers even try to use SmartGlass.  Usually people toss around the word "gimmick" to dismiss a concept, but I don't even think SmartGlass qualifies as a gimmick.  It's more like ... a thing that exists .....

My guess is that SmartGlass functions are going to be vary basic.  How can you do anything complex across such a varied set of hardware?  Is the person on a phone or Ipod? Android, Ipad?  What version? Screen size and functions are so varied that it would be hard to get too complex as a developer.
I will believe it when I see it- Microsoft programming for ios devices and doing it well on top of that is hard to fathom.

I don't think the SmartGlass strategy works nearly as well. With the GamePad, the screen in on the controller. You can use the screen and the controller at the same time. That's why it works so well. With SmartGlass, you have to keep track of 2 separate things. It doesn't seem as intuitive.
