Nintendo Teasing Three Wii U Launch Titles on Facebook

The Wii U Facebook page has been updated with a cryptic status.

Nintendo of America updated the Wii U Facebook page with the following status: "Guess what the initial game releases will be for Nintendo’s new home console, Wii U? Soon we’ll scratch off to reveal the names! ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒."

While it's not known for sure if the three games teased are Nintendo-published games, it seems to be a safe assumption. Two of the games are very likely New Super Mario Bros. Mii and Pikmin 3, which are confirmed to be at E3 2012 and are likely candidates for launch titles. The third title is a relative mystery, though it could be the Wii Sports-like title that Nintendo President Satoru Iwata talked about during the recent investors' meeting.

Though, at the end of the day, nobody truly knows except for Nintendo right now. We will find out for sure during E3, which starts on Tuesday, June 5.

Interesting.

The only known game at this point that would get me interested in purchasing a Wii U at launch would be Pikmin 3. Can you imagine how awesome Pikmin 3 will look in HD? Can you imagine how good that Duracell battery and that tin of Tuna fish is going to look? Can you!?

I'm sorry. I passed out from excitement for E3 after I posted that. Did I miss anything?

DannyRaisin4May 30, 2012

Pikmin 3 all the way.

I can't wait to play Pikmin 3 at E3 to find out whether it's the greatest game ever or merely the greatest game made so far.

FZeroBoyoMay 30, 2012

Speaking of Pikmin 3, I wonder if treasures will be items like 7-Up lids, sardine cans, and Duracell batteries again. I always got a giggle out of those.

People have been guessing that one title is either "New Super Mario Bros. Wii U" or "Metroid StarFox Fusion Saga" since one slot consists of 27 characters. This is going to be a difficult five days...

EnnerMay 30, 2012

The length of the garbled titles could be a red herring.

Must have patience. It will be time soon enough.

TJ SpykeMay 30, 2012

This would be new, their last 4 consoles have launched with 2 first-party games each. Launching with 3 would be different for them.

3DS launched with 3 (Steel Diver, Nintendogs, Pilotwings)

I guess I should have have said home console, generally I mean just those with "console"

DarthBradyMay 30, 2012

Perhaps the Amount of Characters for each "scratch off" indicates the number of characters in the title's name(s). If that's so, then I don't see a Pikmin 3 at Launch. But I did notice one of them has enough characters for New Super Mario Bros. 2 WiiU...  - Just Sayin'

Also: a new Starfox game would be nice. A REAL new Starfox game. Wouldn't it be great if that's what Retro has been doing?

shinyray01May 30, 2012

Pikmin 3,New Super Mario Bros Mii. and Lego City Stories

Ian SaneMay 30, 2012

Three launch titles would be pretty cool since they do usually go with two.  But this might not be three NEW titles.  If any one of them was some sort of enhanced port Nintendo would surely "count" it.  This is the company that launched the DS with literally a remake of an N64 game as the sole launch title.  Nintendo wouldn't have three new games and a port and describe it as a three titles.  They could consider that four, as would Sony and MS and pretty much every videogame company.

Also we live in the era of "launch windows" which means that the company can expand the "launch" to be any amount of weeks or even months surrounding the actual launch date.  They also say "initial game releases" not "launch titles" and that could simply mean the first three releases Nintendo has planned for the Wii U, which could be all on launch day or spread out over a period of time.

Still, who isn't excited to see what these three titles are?  Could be a bust but the anticipation is hyping me up.

Quit lying! I thought in some parts of the world you were known as "Ian the unhypable."

joshnickersonMay 30, 2012

New Super Mario Bros. Mii, F-Zero, and Diablo 3  ;)

While I suggest lowering your expectations prior to E3 to avoid disappointment, it is REALLY hard to do.  I can't help but be somewhat excited, especially when it involves a new console.

Chozo GhostMay 30, 2012

So which day of the year is more hype worthy: E3 or Christmas?

E3, since it largely determines what I get for Christmas.

the asylumMay 30, 2012

The last box fits these:

Killer Instinct III
Super Smash Bros. 3
The Legend of Zelda

I know Killer Instinct is dead, buried, and now a Microsoft-exclusive property, but dammit just let me be delusional

Chozo GhostMay 30, 2012

Its not impossible that Killer Instinct could make its way to the 3DS, because Microsoft has allowed Rare to put some of their games on Nintendo's handhelds in the past. Microsoft doesn't have a handheld offering of its own, so they don't view Nintendo's handhelds as competition, and they would prefer to support Nintendo's handhelds just to stick it to Sony.

Ah, but these are Wii U launch titles we're talking about here.

Dammit, brain, one of these days you'll learn to stop thinking and let me be blissful in my ignorance

Christmas.  I know the stuff I'm getting for Christmas actually exists and I'll be able to play it.  Games get announced at E3, and then fairly commonly they get delayed for a year or two,  or they're eventually canceled.  And more often than not, games only make an "appearance" at E3 in the form of video trailers & hype.  I'll take a day where I can hold a game over a day a bunch of gaming journalists I'll never meet get to play a demo for a game any day.

But it's rare that you're truly surprised by Christmas gifts. Even with the media and rumors, E3's generally going to bring at least a few announcements you never saw coming.

Chozo GhostMay 30, 2012

I hope one of the surprise announcements is Fallout 4.

Ironically, I think that it's ESPECIALLY when it involves a new console that we need to not let ourselves get overrun with hype...

AdrianwiiMay 30, 2012

My guess is: New Super Mario Bros.. Mii, Pikmin 3 and Wii U Sports.

the asylumMay 30, 2012

To everyone thinking one of them is new Zelda: I wouldn't count on it. Skyward Sword isn't even a year old yet

AilingforaleMay 30, 2012

I'm hoping for only one actual Nintendo title like Mario or Zelda, but I would prefer to have some good new IP's as well from them.  That would get me more excited, or possibly a 3D version of Pokemon that isn't a stadium fighter...

But the media says smartphones are competing with handhelds, so that would make Windows Phone a 3DS competitor...

Could be a digital Zelda game like Four Swords.

Eh, you would think but these days I find this Mega 64 video on E3 to be sadly accurate.  It feels like 99.9% of the E3 unveilings get leaked in the weeks before E3, and this one doesn't seem to be the exception.

AdrockMay 31, 2012

True but there are what, like 5 days until Nintendo's E3 press conference and we still know so little about Wii U and what's in store. Unless the sky falls and everything gets leaked over the weekend, we should have some pretty good surprises.

Ian SaneMay 31, 2012

Christmas is more fun since I actually like participate and such.  Though E3 has more hype.  With Christmas if I don't get a gift I want, I can always buy it myself later if I really want it (I don't expect my loved ones to buy me anything I couldn't afford myself).  At E3 I can only buy the games that are actually made and E3 is when most games are first revealed.

I would like Pikmin 3 for Christmas.  If no one gives it to me, I'll buy it.  But I can only get Pikmin 3 for Christmas is Nintendo MAKES Pikmin 3.  E3 is like where you find out what you want for Christmas.

Though for a kid, Christmas tops everything for anticipation.  Gifts were more valuable then because I had no way to buy things for myself.  You have more hope when you don't have control over a situation.  We have no control over E3.  We can only hope that Nintendo gives us something nice.

tendoboy1984May 31, 2012

Where are all the Microsoft and Sony rumors? Sony keeps announcing new games before E3, so they might not have any surprises left.

HVS apparently has both an untitled Wii U and 3DS games in the works, both shooters. Conduit 3 and/or Conduit 3DS, anyone?

I know Sony has revealed some new PS3 games (PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, Sports Champions 2), and Nintendo has their Wii U Facebook page, but Microsoft hasn't done anything to hype their E3 conference at all.

HVS doesn't have a booth at E3 this year, but I'm seeing if they'll meet anyway.

Kytim89May 31, 2012

They will most likely be revealed at SEGA's booth during E3.

Geoff said on SpikeTV that Mario Wii U would be a launch title.

TJ SpykeJune 01, 2012

They have been working on New Super Mario Bros. Mii for at least a year now, so I would have been shocked if it WASN'T a launch.
