This follows yesterday's Facebook unveiling of the blue variety.

Red Yoshi is now available as an unlockable QR character in Mario Tennis Open.

Revealed by IGN, Red Yoshi is available to unlock by pressing holding up and pressing the start button before scanning the code. Unlike regular Yoshi and Blue Yoshi (who focuses on speed), Red Yoshi has a focus on technique. The code will only work with the North American version of the game.

This gives me an Idea.  Nintendo could use QR codes in Super Smash Bros. 4.  Since the Wii U and 3DS will both have cameras.  You could unlock additional character colors and trophies.  I'd prefer it over the conventional means of unlocking stuff.

Back on the topic of Mario Tennis Open.  It Looks pretty awesome.  I'd consider it, but I heard Neal say the online was laggy.  I know how slow my connection is, I couldn't  even play SSBB.  I could Mario Kart Wii though.

I don't, I want to be able to unlock everything the traditional way. At most, have it be an optional way (especially since the 3DS camera does not work that well with AR cards).

That's basically what Kid Icarus: Uprising does. Its equivalent to trophies can all be unlocked via the AR cards, or they can be unlocked other ways. Since that's Sakurai, it seems somewhat likely we'll see something similar in the upcoming Smash Bros. games.
