We’ve just heard from one of our long-term retail reporters with some exciting news! Our retail-reporter friend, (we call him “Neosabre”) works at a major games-retail chain and just got in a new in-store display for GameCube. Not just any in store display either; one that advertises the Cube with “NEW LOW PRICE!”

We're still a week out from E3, and all the big news is happening. This is just ODD.

Not to be outdone by Sony, and largely out of necessity, Microsoft has matched Sony's $100 price cut which brings the Xbox to $199.

Despite recent reports to the contrary, Nintendo said back in April that if Sony and Microsoft cut their consoles to $199, they would have to consider cutting the GameCube's price.

Steve Kent's latest article goes over the frantic price drops by Sony and Microsoft and whether the same is expected in Nintendo territory.

E3 is just a little more than a week away. With the show quickly approaching, publisher EA has announced the titles they will be showing off in LA at the show. The list includes titiles from EA Sports, EA BIG, EA Games, and EA Distribution.

Madden NFL 2003 (PS2, Xbox, GameCube, PC, GBA)

In the first week of the GameCube's release 400,000 consoles were sold. That, and more statistics inside.

400,000 GameCubes, that is 80% of the launch shipment, were sold throughout Europe during the week of launch. The average tie-in ratio was 2.3 games for each console sold and 23 years is the average age of a GameCube owner.

The next two first party games to be released are Super Smash Bros. Melee on May 24th, and Pikmin on June 14th. 50 games released by summer!

UPDATE: Nintendo has issued a second press release changing the wording to make it clear that the $24.95 drop of the standard controller is effective IMMEDIATELY. A Japanese magazine (email me if you know specifically which one) has posted a two-page spread on Golden Sun 2, the sequel to last year's extremely popular RPG developed exclusively for Game Boy Advance. The pages contain several of the first screenshots for the game, plus some character art and info in Japanese.
