Brawl is dethroned in Japan by the latest Mario adventure.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii has set the record for being the fastest-selling Wii title in Japan, according to a famitsu.com article, with 936,734 units sold in only four days. The previous first-week record was held by Super Smash Bros. Brawl, released in January 2008, which sold 816,000 units in its first week of release.

The game, which was released on December 3 in Japan, might have even topped its predecessor. New Super Mario Bros. for DS, released in May 2006, sold almost 900,000 copies in its first week according to tracking firm Media Create.

No More 3D Marios after Galaxy 2. They aren't profitable enough.

Finally, the fastest-selling game is something which deserves to sell.

Brawl didn't deserve it? I have an INSANE amount of hours logged into that game.

I would probably say Brawl is a better game overall but New Super Mario Bros Wii is not only a great game but has an amazingly wide appeal.
It appeals to older gamers who grew up with Mario as well as younger gamers who may not have grown up with the plumber but can certainly appreciate his colorful, fun world. It appeals to hardcore gamers with its rather surprising amount of challenging gameplay and endless replay value as well as casual gamers with its straight-forward controls and auto-play feature. It's also the perfect title to attract people who don't play video games at all. This is the kind of game that parents/GRAND-parents/girlfriends/young children who don't play video games will get into it when someone in their household invites them to join in the multi-player mode. Basically it's a game for EVERYONE. The only possible exception being the so called "hardcore" anti-Nintendo crowd that HATE this kind of game and won't even give it a chance just because it doesn't have a massive 3D world and tons of blood splatter. But isn't that the secret to the Wii's success? It shunned that one particular audience that formerly had all the power and won over everyone else.

I should be getting this and Modern Warfare 2 for Christmas.  I'll have both sides of fanboydom covered in one holiday!

I should actually consider renting it!

I like to see games I like perform well, and I didn't like that one, to put it nicely.
