The awesomeness that is Mario! Definately cannot wait for this title to appear on the gaming retail shelves. It's a shame to have to wait 6+ months probably for it, but for another classic Mario game, it will be worth it.
Just saw it...
WOW.
The game looks magical and beautiful. The scenes where Mario is flying through space is awe inspiring, and those boss fights look crazy.
The art style is fantastic. Those that think the Wii is severely underpowered should look at this.
Mario galaxy is officially one of my most wanted games on the Wii!
This does look pretty damn cool.
I also get more of the Mario 64 vibe off of this...

I get a Mario 64/Sunshine vibe because I loved both games :-P:. BTW the video is stunning, the visuals are jaw dropping gorgeous and the game looks to be one of the unique titles PERIOD coming out this year.
I love how the game just screams "Hey look, we have fun making videogames!" So many small details that make the artistic flair of this game all the more apparent...(I especially loved the extending vine and the volcano erupting as Mario blasts off!)
It's really cool, but my mind is bending in terms of structure. It's going to be crazy to explore.

If only Nintendo had any artistic talent, it would be amazing.
I watched about half of the video and then it turned it off because all this cool stuff was being shown that probably would have more impact if I first found out about it while playing. The game looks great and it looks fun as hell.
Though I've noticed the backgrounds look much better than Mario himself. He seems a little out of place. His textures are more bland and he has a bit of jagginess to him. I wonder if Nintendo just shoved in that Gamecube Mario model they used in virtually every game. The planets and everything though looks fantastic.

What will be better: this or Super Paper Mario? Either way, I win!
Mario Galaxy is a game that I don't get excited about in my head, but when I watch videos or think back to when I played it, the infatuation kicks in. Like Dan, I'm bewildered by the level design and am still shocked that Nintendo has found a way (or they think they've found a way) to piece together these very loose environments and somehow wrap the player's mind around the changing gravity and camera angles. This game is 3D in a way that few others have even attempted, much less succeeded. If Nintendo pulls it off, I think Galaxy may be remembered as even more revolutionary than Super Mario 64. It already looks more fun.
I wonder if that EA ass hat is eating his words about nintendo not being artistic and having such a crippled machine. And this game looks just amazing a GOTY material.
They're really going after want I eventually wanted out of 3D Mario: a total mind-fuhk.
Mario 64 was great and all as it implemented 3D. But as time went on, it and many more 3D games (FPSs, notoriously) are still dominated by traversal on 2D planes/floors. It's a natural setting, afterall, but it took so long for a high-profile game to tackle the task of expanding the notion of the "playing field" further.
I'd argue the most exhilirating moments of Mario 64 involve the Wing Cap, thanks to its sharply contrasted sense of freedom (and danger?) from the typical platforming -- aspects Mario Sunshine severly lacked (way too terrestrial, not enough time spent grasping for the heavens)
I am most interested to see how Miyamoto uses the Wiimote besides what was shown in the demo units! Things could get crazy.
Looks cool but I miss the straightforward platforming and acrobatics.
Super Mario 64 is available on the VC for 1000 Wii Points.
It looks amazing, but I can't deny I'm a bit worried about the learning curve, I still can't decide how to use the remote-nunchuck as a leftie yet, and this game seems to require precision in both, I wish I could transfer all my learned left thumb controls who has been trained for almost two decades now into my right thumb, it would be so much easier!
No, don't do that.
This is your chance to teach your right hand new things (..................).
Like using a mouse or writing on a chalkboard.
"This game is 3D in a way that few others have even attempted, much less succeeded. If Nintendo pulls it off, I think Galaxy may be remembered as even more revolutionary than Super Mario 64. It already looks more fun."
It looks like it has that potential but I doubt it will be as influencial as Super Mario 64. That's just cause Super Mario 64 is an easier concept to copy and set blueprints that would work for almost any 3D game. Galaxy looks more, well, weird and I don't think it's design is broad enough to have the same impact. It's creative as hell but are all games going to suddenly have weird gravity and camera angles? No, because that's abstract while Super Mario 64's reality is little more like our own world. In real life gravity is "down" and elements of real life are always going to be more common in games just because it's easier for the player and the designer to relate to.
Super Mario Galaxy gives me this "OH YEAH!" feeling that Cube games rarely did. I feel more like I did when finding out info about Pikmin and Metroid Prime because those games were so creative. Though I don't see the remote as as big of a deal as Nintendo makes it out to be (the concept of Mario jumping between planets could have been thought of on the Cube) it does seem to be inspiring them. Because of the remote they have this attitude where they feel they have a new innovative outlet for their games and that's making them think of new ideas, even if they're not specific to the remote.
Ian missed the point again: is the jump button the only way to jump between planets?
If he paid attention to the trailer, the answer is no.
If he didn't pay attention, the answer is yes, and he should get Super Mario 64 from the VC for 1000 Wii Points which will serve all his gaming needs well for the next 6 years.
"Ian missed the point again: is the jump button the only way to jump between planets?"
No it isn't, but I think the concept could have been thought of without the remote. Maybe not this exact execution but what's catching my interest is unrelated to the remote. I dig the planets and the lack of a clear "up" and "down". That idea is unrelated to the remote. BUT the existence of the remote can act almost like a placebo. Nintendo thinks they've opened the door to a new era of gaming and THAT has insprired them.
Sure, but you gotta look beyond the appeal of polygons and planets. They're just the things Mario stands on. The obvious stuff.
The strength of Mario as a playable character is his ability (the mechanics applied) to traverse his environment. You don't need to specifically jump from planet to planet to toy with the traditional feel of gravity, he could've been inside a gigantic bubble and encounter similar feats. I'm viewing the Remote as a tool that's allowing for more creative traversal, period. The rest of the game development just follows suit.
Or both concepts grew at the same time, in which case you should leave this thread before I spoil the rest of the game for you.
The makers of Jungle Beat can do no wrong.
Did you guys know that Mario Galaxy is a clone of Yoshi's Island black bird fight? So obviously they have lost their art direction and creativity because they are COPYING an older game of theres.
This game will be so amazing. When the camera zoomed out and showed the various bodies of land, including the capsule that Mario bursts out of, it pretty much sealed the deal for me. I can't explain it, but this game is just really exciting. I know this will be a game that will be cherished for years to come.
Games shouldn't look this fun, they just shouldn't. I've played games that are fun, but I've never watched a game and had fun...what will happen when I play it? What? What will become of me? Oh, dear....
Super Paper Mario also looks awesome. It is a great time for a Nintendo fan. I know I am speaking like a fanboy right now, but I am really excited for Nintendo lately. The most interesting thing I have seen on the other systems is LittleBigWorld and TMNT on the Xbox Live Arcade. These two Mario titles excite me far more.
Just yesterday, I was thinking how great LittleBigWorld's graphics were--and they are pretty--but I actually prefer the look of Super Paper Mario. What also excites me about Super Paper Mario is that it looks like a game that could be developed with a relatively small budget. Sometimes I consider a career in the video game industry and it is good to know that not all games have to be a massive high-definition 3D experience developed with multi-million dollar budgets.
Edit: LittleBigPlanet
I don't fully understand Little Big World yet. And I couldn't be more jelous of TMNT for XBLA...
I'm still not getting the appeal. The place with the thwomps looks cool, though.
Yeah it is interesting that the Thwomp area has a normal-looking sky.

I'm really loving the idea of this game. Maybe I'll be able to word it eloquently sometime, but god, I'll give it a shot now.
It's beautiful. The motion is so seamless and fluid, and it fits the Mario art style perfectly. The art direction in this particular installment looks especially spectacular, and while all the worlds are disconnected they seem to fit together very well, perhaps because they are so abstract.
It reminds me a little of the obstacle course areas in Sunshine, except awesomer-ized.
The implimentation of gravity looks amazing, and the camera seems to work with it flawlessly, which is quite a feat. I guess I'll have to play to be sure of something like that, but it looks great. This of course ties into how the game functions with the controller and everything, it all seems very well put together.
I love the feel of all the tiny planets, being able to see what's ahead yet have it be so far away, the vast sense of the world you get (in part because it's in space, which is so vast, and in part because you can see so far). The blasting off sequences are really nice, and I like the flair they've given to it.
Also, I can tell now, while playing the game and zooming through space, I'll notice a really awesome looking planet. And I'll think "I wonder what that is", and get really excited for it. It'll be an interesting feeling, getting those glimpses and wondering what's in store for you.
Like Bill mentioned, the attention to detail. This may be what impresses me most. Every planetette seems very unique, each has a different style and shape to it. There are so many different ways of travelling, of obstacles and enemies, and each is very carefully and artfully crafted. I could go on about this, but I'll let it rest with that.
Also, the planets still have that Le Petit Prince quality to them, which I love. One of my favorite children's stories ever.
Note 45 seconds into the video (I have Bill's download version, so I hope it's the same time on youtube). Bottom right corner, in the distance. Airships!
I really hope there's a boss that you fight over the course of several planets, with him following you, or you chasing him, or him flying through space while you try to meet him at certain planets.
Yeah, I think I'm more excited to play this than any game since. . . I dunno, maybe ever. I've been drifting away from gaming a little recently; not a lot, but I've not been playing as much, partially because there aren't many games I'm interested in. I have no doubts that this game will totally restore my interest fully. I'll play it over and over and over, even after I've beat it (which is something I can't really do in something like Twilight Princess).
Lovin' it. Can't wait.
Hostile is right, I do hope Bowser is in it though, I'd like to see what whacky things Miyamoto and co have in store for a Bowser battle in space!
super mario land end boss just popped in my mind
I said wow
QuoteIt was already mine as soon as I saw the first footage of it at the E3 2006 conference
Mario galaxy is officially one of my most wanted games on the Wii!
QuoteIt's funny that right after Miyamoto said how many ideas Pikmin took from Mario 128, the Mario Galaxy trailer ended with what looks like Olimar's spaceship. Right before it fades into the text. I noticed the ship from the E3 footage too.. I wonder.
Bottom right corner, in the distance. Airships!
It kills me that we will likely not get this until October or November. I can't remember the last time I have been this excited for a game.
I'm sort of worried about this game.
My sense of direction is horrible. Watching the video accutely reminded me of such. Then again I was the person who was devastated when they announce the Wiimote because my Fine and Gross moter skills are considered hinder.
Also if Bowser is back I want the Koopa Kids. Not that wimpy unoriginal one we had in Sunshine. (and I liked the game)
