For some reason my audio card has ceased working properly, after watching a few dvds earlier in the day, which sounded fine, I went to play some mp3s through Winamp 5, but they didn't sound right. I thought i may have left the audio set up on 'headphone' so I goto the Audio HQ, into speakers to investigate. It was still set on 5.1, which was odd given the poor sound quality so I do a 'test' which sends a signal to each of the five speakers to test they are producing sound properly. Now when I did this both the front left and right test noises came out the center speaker, the center speaker test noise didn't come from anywhere, and the rear left and right tests were fine.
I checked all the plugs (first thing I do with any problem like this) they were all plugged in fine, I run a diagnostic, it claims everything is fine, out of options I decided to uninstall the whole thing and start over. After bout 50% of the uninstall processs I get this error.

MUST CRUSH NEWSPAPER

Annoyed, I tried again, same error, now I can't do anything using the SB install disc without getting that message, I do still have sound but I can't get it to reinstall properly or anything.

Anyone have any ideas what I could do?

Hmm, that sucks royally.  On my older computer when the sound went out I just had to reinstall the software for soundblaster and after that I was good to go, but I don't have anything fancy on my computers so I can't really help you.

update for anyone who's interested, I tried windows roll back (Running XP Pro) and well, it sort of worked, the things I uninstalled are back, but they don't work <_< namely some of the necessary  file are missing, quite a dilemma.

It would seem like you have some problems there buddy.

Did you try doing a repair install, alot of the programs I have let me install, uninstall or repair an installation?

But usually if something is really crooked I just go into add/remove programs and then start all over again.  I had to do that with my internet software here at work, after we set up the servers it wiped out something in the program files or something and I had to uninstall everything and install it again just so I can get it to work again.

I wish I was knowledgable with computers, that way I could help you with exactly what you need.

Do you get that error only on uninstall attempts?  I would just install it again over itself... assuming you haven't tried that already.

Other than that, I would try removing all sound stuff from your system hardware profile, reboot, and let windows put some default drivers in there.  Then download specific SB driviers from the web and run through that install, completely ignoring the disc?

I dunno...just trying to throw some more ideas out there.

Tried all that, I get that error when doing anything regarding the SB! disc, I can't uninstall it because I get that error, I uninstalled the actuall card it's self but that didn't seem to help, uninstalled the drivers, same deal. I'm thinking reinstall windows ;__;, luckily I have another hard drive I can use to save stuff I don't want destroyed

Is it an onboard sound card?  maybe the connection is just a little screwed up or something.. Try turning your computer off and then taking the sound card all the way out, then putting it all the way back in.

If it IS an onboard soundcard, well, i have no idea.

Do you need 5.1 for a PC? I mean seriously what kind of immersive stuff do you do on it that really needs a 5.1 system?

Doom 3 doesn't NEED 5.1 but then again home theatres don't, either.
