Memory Card Rip-off
« on: July 12, 2004, 04:49:44 PM »
This is another case on Nintendo snubbing off its loyal fans that happily purchased a cube for double the price it is now.  Sports games are one of my favorite generes and they take up a lot of memory.  And at launch all you could buy were the dinky 59 block memory cards for 20 bucks.  If you were a sports gamer you had to at least have two 1 for madden or what not and 1 for other games.  But if you want to play another sports title or a game that requires alot of blocks you had to buy another.  Thats 60 bucks.  I was happy when the mem card 251 card came out.  But now that the 1050 block(or so) card came out i feel ripped off.  We loyal fans paid twice as much for the gamecube when it came out, we had to pay threw the ears for memory, plus we dont get he sega sports games(just had to throw that in there), im kind of upset with nintendo.

I agree, my two memory card 59's and one memory card 251 are completely full, I don't have enough room to save Majora's Mask on, and I need to buy a new one with my next game purchase, but the uber huge 1019 block one isn't out where I live so i'll have to get another pathetic 251. Too little too late, Nintendo.

And I don't even own any sports games.

I'm good- my friend gave me a free memory card 251 in exchange for letting him borrow some games for a while.

This is where I step in and make things better by complaining about NAL again.
Memory Card 59's are still the standard. Memory Card 251's cost about $40 US. Memory Card 19035350 or whatever it is will most likely never be released. If it does, it'll most likely be $99.95.

I used 3x 59 cards, and a full 251 card.

I recently transferred ALL of it to a single 1019, which isn't even half full.

only annoyance is that I can't transfer my damn F-Zero GX file >_>

Yeah, i have to admit that I do feel slightly ripped off, but thats quickly replaced by the fact that I'm *hoping* that the revolution uses the exact same memory card, so that when that system comes out, there will be no issues with mem card space, ever.

I'm thinking about moving my Harvest Moon save to a different card or deletiong it so I have some space on my 251 again. I only have two other cards, one holding PSO and FFCC saves, the other being formatted for japanese games. The japanese saves card has lots of free space so I think I'll put the HM save there. Once I fire up SSBM I can delete the Pikmin save, too, since I only rented that game.

Over here (NZ) they had a cube bundle for sale with The Sims, I think two other games and a 'FREE' standard 59 memory card. Look on the back of The Sims and how many blocks does it take to save? 60! Can't even save the game with the free 59 mem card! lol Pretty pathetic in a way...
So far I've only bought 1x251 card, got a free 59 with my cube (not the Sims bundle, lol) and I've got 2 more 59's coz they seem to be giving them away with games quite a bit. I don't own any games that need big saves so I'm alright  with my 251, but I'd like a 1000 and whatever it is one. BTW, when I bought my 251 over here it cost $79.95, 59's are $39.95

well if the GC had a harddive then it wouldnt of made them loose alot of profit like on Pokemon C and Animal Crossing.
Even old crappy 20meg chip (cost em proberly less then a buck), squezed inside the cube, would of made me happy

I only had one 59 card for the longest time. Then I got another one with Animal Crossing, then another with Mario Sunshine (a bundle deal). At that point I had buckled and bought a 251, and I've bought another 251 this year (for backup purposes). What to do with the two spare 59 cards? I used them each exclusively for two games that wouldn't allow file transfer, F-Zero GX and Pokemon Colluseum specifically. That way I can keep those cards with their games, and I don't have to worry about moving files around and having those stuck on a single card.

Um you know theres not muct third party can do to mess up a memory card.  In general all first party stuff is more expensive.  I got three 3rd party memory cards for the playstation for the price of one first party memory card.  Theres a reason we have 3rd party stuff.

Although it may not seem like there's not too much a third party can do to mess up a memory card, they always seem to find a way to mess it up.

This is an issue that pretty much everyone tends to agree on and with good reason.  I mean how could anybody think that selling a 0.5 meg card for the same price as the PS2 8 meg card is good?  You can't defend it no matter how loyal of a fan you are.  Nintendo finally does have a comparable sized card so it shouldn't be a problem anymore.  However I REALLY hope Nintendo learned from this.  The smaller memory card not only pissed everyone off but it completely screwed up the Cube's sports lineup which I'm sure resulted in lost sales.  This better not be an issue with the Revolution.  It might not be if the Rev has the rumoured hard drive.

Memory cards aren't the only rip-off though.  Nintendo supposedly still charges too much for third party licensing and they have $30 Player's Choice titles when MS and Sony only have $20 "Hits" titles.  Nintendo's got to stop dicking everyone around for a few extra bucks.  Stupid stuff like that is just turning people away.

Even worse, Player's Choice are the only budget titles available. Aside from PC there's only the occassional cleanup of a retailer and very rare price drops to 30 Euros (got Ikaruga that way, have seen SSX 3 and Billy Hatcher for that price), most games stay at 60 Euros forever.

I see a lot of $20 players choice games,Metroid Prime, RS3: Rebel Strike, F-Zero GX, the 2 RE remakes, all of them are $20 new

I know theres quite a few other ones, like a few of the sega titles (I know Mega collection is, as was one of the monkey balls)

I really don't think i've ever seen a $30 players choice.

There are tons of $20 Player's Choice titles but there are $30 ones as well.  They should ALL be $20.  It really sucks in Canada because the $30 games are $50 Canadian which doesn't really seem like much of a deal at all to us.

Even in NZ it's like that. Xbox Classic is $54.95. PS2 Platinum is $54.95. Gamecube Players Choice is $69.95. That's $60.50CAD, $45.80USD, so we're getting even more ripped off.

So we're not complaining about how long it took to drop the price on Vice City, or Halo, which is still $30? No, let's complain about how SSBM was marked down only $20 instead of $30 like the rest.

I didn't even know Monaco distributed player's choice titles here. I'm down in Dunedin though, and there's lots of instances where Auckland/Wellington will get deals that aren't down here (Metroid Prime was released here a month late because it sold out up north the first two shipments). Are you buying from an EB games? They privately ship their product from Aussieland, so they have player's choice titles for retail, just they're not 'official', Monaco-approved ones.

Out of interest, did you see a deal a little while ago where you would recieve a free player's choice title with a new GC? It was with both EB and Central Park down here, so I have a suspicion it was Monaco's bidding. It was on top of the Zelda bonus disc deal as well, so I sold my Cube and bought another one.

If you're from NZ and interested in memory cards, there are a few going cheap on TradeMe.com (I just got an official 251 block for 41NZD including shipping).

Why didnt nintendo just put out the mem card 1019 at launch and then put the price at about 50 bucks.  Still be getting alot of money and people wouldnt be mad like we are now.  It would stink for a couple months but then you relaize you would never have to buy one again.

I dunno, 50 bucks for a memory card (granted its big); I'd would pick a game over the card. strange logic, but since memory cards are more utilitarian then entertaining, It would always be beyond my grasp, since I'd rather get the next killer title.

The other thing is the stability. the 251 can't be hot-swapped like the 59 (Either that or I have bum version), and there are some issues with the 1019 not recognizing certain games because of programming issues (Sonic Adventure 2 can't recognize 999 blocks or something like that.)

Hopefully the Revolution will fix some of these things.

the few games that have issues with the 1019 are 95% titles that you'd never want to play, and the only issue with Sonic Adventure 2 is that you can't have more than 99 different save files, to my understanding.
