"I know there is a stronghatred for the ps2 here"

Eh?  I happen to love my ps2.  I love my xbox and pc as well.  The GC is my favorite though.  And most people here do love their gamecube the best because this is a gamecube forum...

I'm saying that my favorite Nintendo console is SNES, followed by NES, GC, and then N64. While I like the GC better overall in comparison to N64. I prefer the N64 versions of Mario and Zelda to those of the GC. I'm hoping the new Zelda will unseat OoT as my favorite Zelda game.

PlayStation 2 has better games than Atari Lynx, proven fact by a number of letters formed into words. Irem's Disaster Report/SOS Final Escape on PS2 has amused me more than pretty much anything on GameCube has.

I'm hoping the next Zelda is better than both OOT and Windwaker. If it's worse than OOT it can go to hell, I don't like that game (awful camera/controls, if you lack buttons don't try to map as many functions to them!)

Wha?  How did the N64 controller lack buttons?  I thought OoT was the perfect use of the N64 controller.  Unless you've only played the Cube port.

I hope the new Zelda is better than OoT too but more in a "f*ck that would be so awesome" way.

Sinced when do we hope ANY Zelda game is not the best? I don't recall myself ever saying "I really hope the next Zelda is better than Majora's Mask, but I hope it's not better than Ocarina of Time."

OoT had bad controls? Did we play the same game. OoT had excellent controls. I know GC port's controls weren't quite as good due to the lack of a couple buttons but they still were pretty good.

I'll also point out the analog sensitivity in MM/OoT were tailored to the N64 analog stick, which explains why I have great difficulty shooting all 50 Octoroks in the Clocktown Shooting Gallery.  I did it years on on N64, but not now on Cube.

Eh, I'm just as good in the shooting galleries on the Gamecube as I was on the N64- took a little getting used to, but that was it.

So, where's the camera control, then? I mean camera control that goes beyond "move behind player". And the delayed lock-on (try pressing lock before the fairy reachedthe target) is really annoying. Those two issues alone were enough to kill me quite a few times.

Your joking right, you must be confusing OoT, with Castlevanai Legacy of Darkness for N64 or Ninja Gaiden on X-box. Those game have camera issues. OoT's camera is close to perfect. I still despise Ninja Gaiden's camera.

Umm...hmm....trying to think of something on topic. Oh yeah. I also hate the PS2 controller, not only do I hate the configuration but those things are more fragile than the PS2 itself. I mean damn, between my brother and my PS2, we've gone through 5 controllers. All of them have the same problem. The buttons start to stick and/or one of the analogue sticks refuses to center. All of my GC and X-box controllers still work.

Yeah, the PS2 controller layout is annoying and even worse ALL analog gamepads for the PC mimic its design! Whoever thought using digital control as the primary inpuit method for a current gen console should be rammed head first into a wall until the brain comes out. Grrr, the only way to get a better layout on a PC controller is to get an adapter for XBox or GC controllers...

I have great trouble to get the camera in OOT to point where I want it to point quickly. Octorocks make that even more annoying. Dodge a shot while waiting for the fairy to go there and suddently they're out of view and you have to walk towards them again to try to lock on (which often results in a hit, I get hit by octorocks often while I'm trying to get a lock on them). It's even worse when trying to handle stronger enemies. That's a strong contrast to, say, Metroid Prime, where locking on works imediately (the sun flower fight would have been a lot harder if this wasn't so). I still don't get why they delayed the lock on. Hell, nobody would have complained if locking worked before the fairy reached the enemy, would they?

Wait dude, you're contrasting the camera system that OoT pretty much invented against a game that it's been slightly improved in?  Give me a break.  That camera scheme hasn't been carried over to countless other games for no reason.

Are we dissing the PS2 controller?  Yeah!  I must join in!

The PS2 controller sucks because of the following issues:

1. The d-pad is split and thus is the most blister inducing uncomfortable piece of crap EVER.  Whoever thought of that should have their liver cut open and be forced to drink the bile inside.  It's irritating that despite that fact that literally every single third party Playstation controller ever made doesn't have the split d-pad that Sony hasn't realized "hey this sucks" and fixed it.

2. The controller is d-pad centric.  The analog sticks are positioned in an out of the way place as if they're an afterthought.  Hello this is 2004.  Analog control has been established as the standard for 3D games.  Get that stick in the primary location.

3. There are four trigger buttons.  I HATE using my middle fingers for gaming.  It requires me to hold the controller in an unnatural position that digs the handles into my hand.  The N64 and Saturn controllers know how to do 8 buttons: two triggers and six face buttons.  Four triggers is almost as uncomfortable as a split d-pad.

4. The buttons have unpronouncable shapes to indentify them instead of letters.  The human brain adapts better to letters.  I respond very easily to "press A to do this".  If I hear "press Square to do this" I have to look down.  It's just too difficult to associate shapes with functions after a whole life of reading only letters and numbers in books, signs, posters, TV, movies, etc.  This isn't ancient Egypt.  Ditch the stupid shapes.

I don't really care for the Cube or Xbox controllers either but they're still way better.  This gen though is probably been the worst one yet for controllers as all three of them are crap.  I KNOW we won't see any sort of redesign from Sony next gen but I hope Nintendo and MS design better controllers.  Nintendo should make the d-pad bigger and redesign the face button layout (and add two more face buttons to have 8 buttons like Sony will have) while MS should rearrange the black and white buttons so that they're in a usable position (again the N64/Saturn six button layout would be best).

Ian you really have to stop jacking into my brain man. I swear 90% of the time we are in complete agreement. I couldn't have stated it better myself. You nailed just about every reason why I hate the PS2 controller. The best controller I've ever used is the Saturn analog pad. The D-Pad was comfortable, the analog stick had just enough resistance, and it had the perfect button layout. I liked N64 controller but the buttons were too small and the D-Pad was a little stiff.

"The best controller I've ever used is the Saturn analog pad."

You know if you added a second analog stick to that pad, made the sticks click like the PS2 controller, and added a click to the triggers like the Cube has (the Saturn 3D pad was analog triggers doesn't it) you would have a controller that would work with almost every console game released.  I'd love it if Nintendo went that route next gen.  They probably won't since they claim they're going to do something really different that I assume would use a creative controller design.  Seriously though if a console game standard was ever made a tweaked version of the Saturn analog controller would be ideal as the standard design.

Ian: You're not supposed to use your middle fingers for the second shoulder buttons. You're just supposed to move your index fingers down. Otherwise I completely agree with you about the PS2 controller- in a lot of games where the d-pad and control stick are interchangeable I find my thumb slipping to the d-pad a lot.

If you ask me the Dreamcast controller is one of the best I've ever used. The d-pad's just a little too low and the control stick is just a little too high (they should have shifted both down), but otherwise I love it.
