Rare Gamecube games?!
« on: July 01, 2004, 06:57:01 AM »
How can retailers justify RARE GameCube title and even eBaY does this! I went everywhere to find Ikaruga, Bust Buy, Circuit City, GameStop, and other electronic stores in my area. I can surmise and to my surprise it is a hard game to track down. Why do game companies do this? what makes a GC game rare, after all its been out for less than 3 years???

A game like Ikaruga wasnt expected to do to well so it didnt launch with as many copys but it did well for its expectations and now there isnt much copies to spare.

Yeah, there are a few "rare" gamecube games.

Ikaruga, definately.  There just weren't that many units created of the title, considering that, it sold amazingly well.
Skies of Arcadia Legends is another "rare" one
Cubivore is also quite rare.  Yet again, simply because they didn't print too many copies because of the limited market.

I <3 all 3 of them.

Actually, Atlus itself, makes sure its games are "rare" products.  They market them this way, they know they appeal to a niche userbase, so they seemingly don't make enough copies.  Then, once theyre done with their small market penetration (one game per store, etc.) they can mark UP the price on their own games.  Look at Atlus' website if you don't believe me.

How do you know it (ikaruga) sold "amazingly well"?  Where are the numbers?  I'd love to know where you find out how much a copy of game "x" has sold.

I see Ikaruga at my Wal-Mart everyday here.  It pisses me off because when I wanted to buy it like a couple of years ago, I couldn't because no place had it, I had to get it in OKLAHOMA!! Some damn 400 miles away, oh well, all I can say is, I am one happy camper.

At first I thought you meant the developer.

I haven't really sought out any "rare" Gamecube games.  I've been spending a lot of money on DVDs and stuff. . . but a few do seem tempting.  I found a DVD I'd been looking for, though.  Suicide Kings: good movie.

But if I ever do. . . watch out.  Cuz there's gonna be hell to pay.

In Australia, every gamecube game is rare! On eBay EVERY game ever in the history of the world is rare according to some sellers 'LOOK RARE LEGEND OF ZELDA OOT IN GOLD CARTRIDGE!!! MUST L@@@@@@@@@K', ofcourse every copy of OoT sold in Australia had a gold cart, and there is an ubundance of copies available, but no no! must try and gouge some monies! BUT I digress, hit up second hand stores, they're often goldmines when it comes to rare games.

I saw somebody list a Jet Black GameCube as -*****rare*****- on eBay once. That was hilarious. Maybe they got pudding stains on it shaped like Luigi's head or something. SUPAH RARE WA-HOO. OHHKAY.

Oh hey edit. My local EB sells N64 games based on how rare they are. They'll pay $5 a game, any game. Then if it's something like Conker's Bad Fur Day, Paper Mario or Starcraft 64, they'll sell it for $120 ++ (Seriously, there's a copy of Paper Mario in there for $120. No box or manual)

I know what game i had been looking for everywhere and the EB games guy said, that there was none anywhere, was rare MGS:The twin snakes!! I spend hours on the phone searching for it and it turns up on their shelf the very next week!!

Paper Mario was supposeadly rare in Australia but I managed to get a copy for a ridiculous sum like $110 or something in my own town! It's a damn fine game.
IMO rare games are ones that I need to go overseas to get, like Ikaruga and Harvest Moon for GBA. But really any game is rare for me.

You know what games are stupidly rare here in Calgary?  Mega Man Collection (haven't seen it anywhere) and Bomberman Jetters.  I'd own both of them right now if I could find them anywhere.
That's my opinion, not yours.

In my area there are virtually no rare Cube games.  Skies of Arcadia Legends is a little pricey but it's available as is Ikaruga (and naturally I own both of them).  Cubivore is a little more obscure but both the EB in Langley and Abbotsford have at least one copy.  I'm just not interested in that game so I've never bought it.  The only game I absolutely have never seen is what I believe to be the rarest Cube game of them all.  It's a Sega Sports NCAA 2K game.  I think it's basketball.  Anyway I believe it came out just as Sega pulled their sports lineup from the Cube and thus a very limited amount of copies were released.

GBA games are what's obscure here.  Since the GBA has a PS2 size library but gets Dreamcast size shelf space it seems every store in my area only has games released in the last few months.  Aside from first party titles everything is new.  I can't even find any of the Castlevanias anymore and they're very major third party games.

Well Ikaruga is Treasure!

Seriously its one of those games that people don't know is good.  They just recently jumped on the bandwagon thinking they're one of us.

"Is paper mario rare everywhere?"
I just remember that three months after it came out, I couldn't find it ANYWHERE. I ended up having to settle for a used copy at EB for close to the original retail

See this perfectly shows what you guys would call rare and what us Australians would call rare. THose games probably wont even come to our country, if they do you wont be able to get them outside of Sydney and Melbourne, or better yet, Blockbuster video will buy every single copy (Resident Evil 2 for N64.)

Yeah, Atari have no plans at all to release Bomberman Jetters here, Rab. They were going to, but then decided against it. =\
