Golden Sun for GameCube?
« on: June 30, 2004, 07:23:31 PM »
Hey guys, Louie asked me to make a Talkback thread for discussion of his new rumor article, which discusses rumors of a new Golden Sun sequel for GameCube, as well as LAN/Internet play in Mario Tennis.  The article contains a pile of never-before-seen comments from the Takahashi brothers, so it's definitely worth reading!  I think Louie did a really nice job on this one, so hopefully you all will find it interesting.

You can read the rumor report by clicking here.

No disrespect to teh Louie catnip, but I'm thinking the new Golden Sun will be on the DS.  Rumblings are about a GC game, but a DS game makes more sense.  It would better explain the long wait for a sequel in the franchise, and a touch screen sure fits with the Takahashi Bros.'s vision of hands-on exploration.

Why can't we have both? ;_____;

And for us, as far as the whole Golden Sun setting, the world, the storyline for us, in our minds, Golden Sun 1 and 2 are prologues to the real event yet to come… So those games are created—again, from our viewpoint—as a way of introducing this world to the game players.

Yeah, simply by this interview these guys have earned my respect. I don't care if they're not exactly on the ball all the time; they seem to have strong ambition, strong goals, and will actually listen to media instead of sounding snobby and elitist. It's a nice change.

as for a GC Golden Sun... I'm still not even through the first one yet, but a GC version sounds nice. Though with ToS and Baten Kaitos comming up, unless they have a decent engine they can use from somewhere in Nintendo I think that maybe the DS or Revolution would be a better choice. I'd hate to see a great game (that I'm sure they're capable of making) dwadle in sales because it came too late in the life-span (ala Majora's Mask.)

I just hope this time they'll tell us beforehand if they're not selling a whole game but just the first third.

Honestly, I'd wish everyone would shut up about Golden Sun's story being broken up. The games themselves were more than complete- don't let the fact that the story isn't finished ruin your experience. That's just plain stupid.

GREAT IDEA!

3 SCREENS!

You get the Golden Sun 3 package with a disk and a cart/disk/DS media thing plus a free cable (because Nintendo are nice like that ya'no). On one DS screen you have the Golden SUn normal view. On the other you have inventory, map, stats, things like that. On the GC screen you have a full 3D representation of everything happening in the game. This would be great because all the GC power can be put inot the graphics while the DS does the AI and everything like that.

If the DS will connect to the GC or Revolution it will be wirelessly...

teh Louie's my hero!

Wow, the Takahashi bros seem very...friendly. Talk about refreshing!

Golden Sun on the DS.... [insert almost infinite, clever ideas here]

Golden Sun on the 'Cube? I'd like to think that the Golden Sun series can go pound for pound with the other RPG franchises once they hit the big screen. It just needs some ADVERTISING like they did with The Lost Age.

Haha, jaaa sure, as if playing turn based RPGs just for the gameplay was enough fun to justify paying full price for them... If I wanted good turn based battles I'd grab Chess.

If you're playing RPG's primarily for the story then you must be really bored. Stories are important, yeah, but it's the battles and puzzles that keep me interested- if they're boring or tedious I don't care how good the story is, I won't play the game. And if the battle system is good enough, the turn based battles do indeed justify the price. Case in point the Grandia series.

And chess is fun, you should play that, too.

The Grandia series isn't exactly turn based, is it? Well, okay, to some degree, but it's still much better than Golden Sun. Also, I think no matter  how good your combat system is, if you have to do the same fight over and over again while running through a dungeon it eventually gets repetitive. The story is the only thing thast doesn't repeat every time you encounter an enemy...

Well, using your same analogy, if I want a good story I'll read a book. You don't read or watch an RPG, you play an RPG. If it's fun to play that's all that matters. If you're doing through the same fight over and over again while running through a dungeon, it sounds like a boring RPG that wouldn't be fun no matter how good the story was.

This would explain why I get bored of most RPGs so quickly.

No, it just repeats each game:

Oop, I'm a teenager with amazing powers.
Hey look, pretty girl with amazing powers and an as of yet unrevealed secret, which will dramatically affect the story.
Ahhh! some evil entity is threatening the world.
Ack! He destroyed my hometown.
Obligatory flirting and "deep" emotional connections between male and female characters.

I could add some more , but I think that will do.

Koopa: I don't start a new game twenty times per dungeon.

Really, games like Anachronox have been much more fun since they knew that battles aren't much fun and cut down on the number of fights required (often you'd run around trying to solve puzzles and the like for hours without a fight in between). One problem is that fighting the same fight over and over again doesn't give me a feeling of progression. Without a feeling of progression I feel like I'm wasting my time. Even with totally predictable stories every cutsene means you have progressed through the game and affected the game world in a certain way. In Golden Sun, what exactly have you changed at the end of the first game? Having a feeling that my actions mean something and affect the world arouind me is a critical part for me to have fun. Of course, if the game manages to give me the feeling of being out of control that hurts the fun.

But you play the same story for 20+ hours every game.  Obiously this is a bit extreme, since the stories do differ slightly and atleast have different faces, but the argument still stands.

Eh? Golden Sun didn't offer a whole lot of Gameplay. The puzzles were nice, but the fights were pretty boring after some time. If they had a system without zoomed battles (e.g. like Zelda) the fights would have been mere seconds and not as annoying. Come to think of it, I think that random encounters + zoomed/paused battles are the main contributor to the boring gameplay of RPGs. Random encounters or frequent enemies make you fight pretty often and zoomed battles make sure the battles don't differ a lot from each other since the field and situation is always the same.

Golden Sun for GCN? Naaah this isn't good idea. Because
1) GCN is Deading system, N now is working on Wii.
2) Two first games is created on handheld. It won't be good on tv konsole - like the Fire Emblem franchise - the best games of series was on GBA... Path of Radiance can't keep the level of that games... (But I still have hope for Fire Emblem Wii!)
3) NDS gaves more posibilities than GCN. And it is nearly imposiible, that N will gave us possibility to link NDS with GCN (when that option was announced for Wii)

Koopa Troopa: Yes, you are telling truth. But detais is very variety, sometimes you can spot some friendship traitors, and many of sidequest and sidestories. That why I think that Fire Emblem is one of the bests franchises ever! The many characters, everyone with own story, past and future (at the end of game, based of support conversations).

KDR_11k: You too telling truth. Random battles and zoomed battles ruins all of cRPG! That why I always will telling that Chrono Trigger was one of the best cRPG ever! Just after FE and Legend of Zelda.
