PC Games on XBox
« on: June 17, 2004, 03:40:11 AM »
I feel like Microsoft is using the PC Games more than they should to sell their game. Example of what I'm talking about is Doom 3. Now I understand Doom 3 is going to be a huge hit, I can't wait for it, and that it will sell on XBox... Mostly becuase Hardcore XBox Owners are brainwashed by Microsoft to buy any game. It will "Be the same game" but with less graphics. I just think this is sad, becuase I own Rainbow Six 3 for the PC and it is an awesome game. I played it at my friends house who had it for XBox and the graphics weren't anywhere as sharp as the computers, and things were left out. If the XBox is unable to fully run Rainbow Six 3, makes me wonder how bad Doom 3 will look. The computer is it's own gaming tool, and I think it's big name games on the computer shouldn't be aloud on consoles. We are entering an age of computers, where every home is either buying a new computer, or upgrading theirs. Most homes have a computer, and if not, they will sometime down the line shortly due to the price drops of older computers. (Which are still good to this day) So the excuse, Well some homes don't have a computer and just a console.. shouldn't be aloud.... To some extent. Games made for the next generation computer, shouldn't be seen on current or next generation consoles. The greed in money with this makes me upset. Though, I would like to see old school computer games that weren't played as much as they should becuase not everyone had a computer back in the day. System Shock 2 comes to mind that should have been on a console last generation. Ehh, what do you guys think?

If the game is better on the PC than on consoles, why not just be happy you have the superior version?  Nobody is taking it away from you by putting it on consoles, although I admit that low-quality PC to console ports are a bit greedy on the part of game publishers.
Personally, I don't like the hassle of keeping my PC up to date and getting everything to work.  I can pop The Sims into my Gamecube any time I want and play right away, but my girlfriend has to spend 15 minutes or more installing it on her PC and then she usually winds up removing it after a couple of weeks because it starts crashing and interfering with her other software.
That's my opinion, not yours.
Now Playing: The Adventures of Link, Super Street Fighter 4, Dragon Quest IX

Yeah. That is very true, I should be happy iwth the superior version. The Sims I thought was an excellent offering to the consoles. I guess what I'm trying to say is the games meant for the new generation of computers... Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 are the more common known ones. If you own a PC for gaming use, usually you keep your computer organized and clean and well kept up with.. their for windows will have less problems. Though really, I enjoy my online gaming on the PC more than any console that has ever been out.... Though I did enjoy playing SNES online, and Dreamcast. As much as XBox is an online tool, I think the online gaming world is easier to deal with on a computer, instead of via console.  Also, Games like Real Time Strategy shouldn't be on a console, though I do notice they try to avoid them.

Well, Mr.Carmack at id did say some sections of Doom3 had to be toned down for the box, but it has the exclusive co-op mode!

Once the mod community gets their hands on level and texture editors, the 'Box version will pale in comparion. Sure they'll get carefully selected Xbox Live content (which may cost a little extra, see Mech Assault), but I'd like to think that id throwing MS a bone, while PC gamers get the t-bone steak.

MS's answer to 'inferior' ports has been answered with XNA. Will the devs flock to it?

XNA won't help them. It won't magically reduce UT2004's ressource footprint until it's even close to fitting into the XBox's RAM, it won't magically simplify the controls of Battlecruiser, etc.
The problem is that design has to differ from console to PC. They want to make XBox controllers standard for the PC, I say they can go to hell. Another problem is scalable architecture. Sure, they could have made Far Cry with XNA, but it would still run like a brick on an XBox or a PDA. PC hardware is generally ahead of console or portable hardware, if a game is fit to the power of a PC it will likely not run on a console. Let aside the different genre preferences of the different devices. Someone who has a PDA likely won't want to play hours on end, likewise most PC gamers won't play platformers or other, from their POV "inferior", console genres.

Why do PC gamers complain about consoles damaging their games? Hm, does Deus Ex II ring a bell?

You do know that Rainbow Six 3, is a essentially a DIFFERENT game on consoles (not just Xbox)? It's supposed to be more action oriented and less pace-slowing planning. About the graphics of both games, I agree, but if you really expect consoles to look as good as high-end PC's, then I don't know what to tell you. Do you actually expect console games to look as good high-end PC games of the same name?

Anyways, I don't understand the problem with Microsoft wanting to release a blockbuster title on it's on console. Say that sentence again, and maybe you will understand. I don't know of these "brainwashing" techniques, but if I wasn't getting a new PC in a month or two, I would probably buy Doom 3 for Xbox as well. Why? B/c my PC wouldn't have any chance of running it. So being 'forced' to play a sure-to-be blockbuster title on Xbox is "sad?" Alright whatever, but I would'nt really care, b/c I would be playing Doom 3.

See I don't "expect console games to look as good as high-end PC games". That's my point. Doom 3 is being used as a money maker, that's why I said it's said. It's not sad that people would buy it, it's sad that Id uses it to make money. Now don't get me wrong, I understand you make a game, becuase its your job and hopefully love, and with that you get paid.. especially how well you do, the more you get paid. I also understand making these deal with MS will really give them a boost. To me, Putting a game like Doom 3, which like I said before it was originally just for new generation computers, I think makes it a new game. I'm asking if it will be the same game, and I highly doubt it. I don't think it will have the same feeling and same enviroment that it should have if put onto a console. Don't get offended by anything I say.. It is only my opinion. You seem frustrated AMac to the point that you overlooked what I was saying.

I just don't understand how you can think that. What could they possibly do to the game to take out the "environment", and "feeling" from the game? It WILL be the same game mechanics, and it will have 2 player co-op. It just won't have as good graphics. They're still going to be there, they just won't look like a high quality PC would have it. Did you read something in a preview, that would give you this impression, b/c I just don't understand where you get that idea.

Alright, so I was a little moody last night, and My apoligize. To me, I don't understand how a game meant for new technology can be put into a console game without taking things out, besides the graphics. Also, The XBox version will have 2 player co-op. That's something more than what the PC version will have they say. So they obviously have to be tweaking things and having MS have their ideas. The lighting effects in games take a good time to render, and with swinging lights and dark rooms I just dont think will have the same feeling. I feel like there will be a lot of little stuff taken out of the game, which will make the enviroment different. Though, How can you be so positive too that there won't be things taken out besides the enhanced graphics? It's just anytime a computer game comes out to a console, It just doesn't have the same feel. It's my past experiences that make me doubt. It just makes me wonder, and I dont trust MS to make it the same game.

Apextreme.com
Phantom.com
DISCover Technologies

You know with these systems/technolgies this makes PC gaming easier.  Just because I have one of the best computer available doesn't mean its fit to be for gaming.  Heck I might use up all the harddrive and there won't be any room left for gaming.  Plus if we want a machine that concentrates on gaming using something w/o DISC is kind of a waste of money.  With Phantom all you have to do is let them upgrade it themselves and you got requirments that will work in harmony with most games every time.  With DISC you got a machine that concentrates all its resources on gaming, d/l every patch, auto-installs or auto-uninstall whenever a game isn't being played in a while but still keeping saved place.  It also brings it into the living room, turns of and on like a console, etc  There is more hassle with  PC gaming than any other gaming.

Now with this xbox and probable use of playing PC games, I wish Nintendo and Sony can do the same thing.  Rather it be a PC that plays games but playes their companies's games only or rather the company using something like Phantom or DISC.  This way while they're always getting games this makes developers think of other games they can put on the system instead of doing some crappy port like they do with the GC.  This even makes Nintendo go online.  While they have PC games that do go online Nintendo will have plenty of time to decide how their games go online.

Plus think of it this way.  You can play Morrowind on the xbox but you can play Morrowind and two of their expansion packs on the PC.  With both you only need the superior.  The gap between PC games and Consoles need to close now.

Being a PC gamer since Doom Deathmatch, I take being able to upgrade/better graphics with PC.  Multiplayer co-op?  If you know what you are doing you can make any online pc game co-op, it's just harder when the devs don't just make it an option.
