Firefox 0.9 released
« on: June 16, 2004, 07:41:11 AM »
UPDATE:  Now with more numbers.

Just thought I'd let you guys know that 0.9 has been released. Go here to ge it.

The new theme is ugly, but you can download the old one, so no problem. The old them is called Qute, by the way. I just downloaded it myself, so I really haven't gotten to test it out properly, but I have noticed it is hella fast.

Oh, and Thunder bird 0.7 has been released as well.

You shouldn't have to. When you are installing it, it asks if you want to import all of your 0.8 stuff. I would back up everything I want saved first though, incase something goes wrong. You will have to download your extensions again though.

In fact that's the biggest let down so far, because a lot of the extensions are missing. I'm sure it's just the fact that they have to be updated for 0.9 though, so it shouldn't be that long till most of them are back up.

I told it to, but it only imported my IE favorites. I don't even USE IE. Well I'll figure something out.

Well, it gives you choice between importing your Firefox 0.8 stuff, IE stuff, or some other browser. Make sure you had the right one checked.

You're given the choice from which browser you want to import from, so did you accidentally choose the wrong one? :\

I definitely told it to import .8's bookmarks and it definitely didn't. Now when I go to the import thing under file, it only lets me import Netscape stuff. Aw hell. Well I'll just have to manually reenter it all.

Does your Firefox 0.8 folder still exist? If it does, you should just be able to go into it and copy and paste the bookmark file into 0.9's folder. You can also just import it by going into the Bookmarks Manager menu.

Anyway, at least you didn't lose all your passwords. I had pretty much the same thing happen to me when I upgraded to 0.8. I had a crap load of passwords I lost, most of which I didn't have written down anywhere, so they were gone for good. Taught me to back up all my stuff.

Okay this is weird. I could have sworn I responded to this already, but apparently I didn't. Meh. Whatever. Okay well I'm glad I had to reenter all my bookmarks cause they were a mess. So disorganized and I'm pretty sure I've never even visited half of those sites. o_O So yeah, I have my bookmarks up and running.

Passwords have never been a problem for me. I only have a few; very dangerous if someone figures them out, but it is convenient. Plus what do I care if people know that my PGC forums password is ilickgerbils4fun? What's the worst you could do? Change my name and location? Pah.

Well Firefox 0.9 is definitely better than the previous version. As Gibdo said, it is faster, and I've gotten used to the ugly theme already. Perhaps the Mac theme looks a little different than the PC. Oh and thanks for the update, Gibdo.

Finally something that loads faster, instead of waiting on IE to decide on what the hell it's waiting for, and I have adsl.

Yeah, it could've been a problem with what profile you imported, Berny.  All of my favorties are in the 'default' profile, NOT 'knowsnothing.'  =P

Anyway, I like it, but the icons on the top are really big and rather bothersome. o_O

Oh, if big is the problem you CAN make them smaller. Go to customize toolbar which is under the view menu on mac but is probably hidden somewhere else on PCs and you can change the icons size. I did that first thing cause yeah, they were freakin huge.

Actually, the new theme is cross-platform IIRC.  The old way, Qute was used in Windows/Linux, but Macs had their own theme.  Due to licensing problems, Qute was dropped in Windows/Linux, and the Mac theme was modified to suit all platforms.  The theme is in quite an early stage though, and it's not really suited well for Windows.

Windows generally favors more gradient based smooth artwork, with very little/no shadows.  While Macs favor the simplistic coloring, and more shadows and angles in their artwork.

I just installed Qute and was done with it.

Heh, It's the Return of Grey Ninja, good to see ya.

Grey has been preaching for awhile how good Mozilla reall was A formal source code for Netscape, before it became crapscrape.

Well Grey on a side note, feel free to boost your avatars size, should you feel the need. 100x100 in the new standard.

Open source programs are usually updated on a much more consistant basis than commercial ones. Because they're free, they can release small installments; commercial projects would pissed off their userbase getting at having to shell out $50 a month for 'new' software. It also allows for unstable versions to be readily released to the public without concern as well.

I'm concerned about how heavy Firefox/Firebird/Phonex has become, though of course I still like it. I reckon I'll switch to plain old Dillo soon... has anyone else here tried this?

I can't say I'm happy with 0.9 at all right now- twice it has deleted my profile out of the blue, which generally isn't too bad, except I had over 100 bookmarks the first time and had almost finished finding them all again when it did it the second time. I'll probably go back to Firefox at some point, but I'm not happy with it at all at the moment. I'm using Opera right now.

^_^ I know. I LOVE the popup blocker. I used to get popups all the time even WITH Earthlink's popup blocking feature ( 73h [h33p b4573rdz0rz). Then I went to what was once Firebird and suddenly they were ALL GONE. And there's an extension that counts the number of blocked popups per page and I've seen it get as high as 8.

Oh, and tabbed browsing rocks my world as well, but you have to experience it yourself to know how much more awesomer it is than .... not tabbed browsing.
