DS wireless connectivity

I read somewhere that the DS will have wi-fi as well as bluetooth to connect to other people with DS'.  My question is do you think that this will allow me to set up my DS to go online via my wireless router connected to the internet?  Is the DS the beginning of online and wireless nintendo gaming?

What do you guys think?

That would be great if it was wireless online but it seems unlikely. There is only so much you can fit in a handheld games system!

See some of the other threads here.  WiFi means online play.  There's also the proprietary local wireless play (which is not Bluetooth by the way).

Hopefully developers/publishers WILL keep the Wi-Fi in mind.  They weren't exactly flocking to the 'Cube when the Broad Band Adapter was released.

Or will publishers take the monetary route and incur 'extra' charges at their discretion?

I don't know much about what's been said, but isn't WiFi free as long as you have a router/access point that has service? The reason online never went anywhere on the GC was because Nintendo never really supported the idea. If they had, we would've seen a lot more title go online. I don't think we'll have to worry about the DS, because it's pretty much designed for online/wireless play.

But then again, it's all up to the developers....

It will be great if it is Wi-Fi because I have one of those router things so even though the box is something like 10m away behind a few walls I'm still getting broadband. Therefore I will be able to lie on my bed or sit in my lounge and play with people across the globe.

But i imagine the amount of data that needs to be sent and processed for a DS game is much less that would be/ is required for a more complex console game, so the costs might be much much lower, to the point of profitability.

Really depends on the game. Things like advance wars will take little traffic because there is only so much that you can do on that game. Move Unit X to point B etc. Bit like chess really. Games like Metroid Prime Hunters on the other hand is gonna take a lot of traffic.

Yeah, I'm really hoping Nintendo makes good use of the Wi-Fi capabilities in the DS, because Animal Crossing online would be incredible. I was more addicted to Animal Crossing for the Cube than a lot of people, and being able to visit towns of people all over the globe instead of just people who you know that have the game would be so sweet. Also, with being able to talk to people's characters face to face instead of just visiting their town and the animals in their town, the possibilities are plentiful. There also needs to be a Super Smash Bros. on the DS that uses Wi-Fi, because after being a member of www.smashboards.com for so long, I have met many people who I could brawl against multiplayer over the internet...

Here's to hope!  I would love to be able to play over the internet but also with people that happen to be physically near me.  I can't wait for the day that I am in the airport and I connect to some 12 year olds DS and kick his arse at SSB or whatever we happen to play, then afterword look over at him and wink and say "Someday you will be a man, but not today"

SSB SHOULD be on the internet.  There's no one for me to challenge anymore. It does getpretty boring playing against level 9 computers all the time.

Wait, wait, wait...Mr. Von Riktor is so not getting this.  Nintendo.com (and the latest issue of Nintendo Power) are both saying that the DS's reach is capable of "thousands of miles" (be the method Internet/Bluetooth/whatever, I don't give how).  Theoretically, that means I could be Crystal-Chronicle'ing with a guy in, say, Detroit, if I'm in Dallas (don't get all touchy about my measurements, it's a hypothetical situation).  Yet Picto-Chat (one of the things Mr. Von Riktor is looking forward to the most about the DS) is able to message with a distance of only a hundred feet...hell, Majesco's Messenger crap for the GBA stretches three friggin' miles (15,840 ft)!  5,280,000 ft=1,000 miles, what Nintendo claims it should be able to do.  If they can pull off more than 100 ft on the GBA, what's the problem wiht the supposedly-more-powerful DS, dammit!?

I'm predicting some sort of online registration to be able to use the Bluetooth/online/whatever feature.  That means, I can name my DS - LEGALLY!  Oh, joy!  My sweetie Molly will be awaitin' me this winter.  Olé, all.

Are you sure the 100-feet thing is when Pictochat utilizes the Wi-fi?  I doubt it...

Actually, Bill, thanks for reminding me to mention that.  I was under the impression that the current Picto-Chat we know is not meant to utilize Wi-Fi.  What I was implying was that they'd better utilize Wi-Fi if they want anyone to buy it.  Another question...who is developing Picto-Chat?
