Now that all the Mario games have been released seperatly, anyone think that Nintendo will release the Super Mario All stars game to milk even more money out of the franchise? You remember, the game with the Lost Levels and 'reworked' graphics for the SNES. Or would they even go so far as to just release the ones already out in one tidy cart? Is it even possible to fit 5 games(Including Mario World and Lost Levels) on the gameboy small gameboy cartridge?

I know I for one would rather have them all on the same cart rather than have to drag along five carts with me...so I'd probably double dip on this one and get rid of my seperate carts on ebay...

That wouldn't surprise me if they did that though it certainly would piss a lot of people off who went and bought the individual releases. Ideally though Super Mario All-Stars is the definitive release of the NES Mario games so from a pure archival point of view that game should be available in stores. Unlike the Mario Advance games which are altered to be easier and have really out-of-place voice samples thrown in Super Mario All-Stars merely upgrades the graphics and sound and provides saving capabilities without altering the gameplay or the experience.

Nintendo should have released Super Mario All-Stars for the GBA launch unaltered except in resolution to fit the GBA screen. However they didn't and it's too late now. However they should look at All-Stars as a template for doing all remakes. In my opinion, aside from examples that use straight emulation, Super Mario All-Stars is the only re-release Nintendo has ever done right.

Give me the original Mario 1 over the SNES port anyday. Yeah it's prettier and all but they completely messed up the way bricks are bashed on it. You're not supposed to actually bust through them. Other than that 2 and 3 were vastly superior. As far as the advances go, I really didn't have that much of a problem with them. I think the only advances that kinda bothered me were SMA1 and 2. 1 because of the extra heart and obsene 1up opprotunities all over the place, and 2 because of the near invincibility the bros. had now because taking a hit in fire or cape mode didn't shrink them completely anymore. 3 and 4, despite a little easing up on the difficulty were still good enough to go IMO. As far as voices go, the only one that ever really bothered me was Toad in SMA1. Other than that I actually felt that it added a little extra charm to the games.

I think the point of the semi-re-makes was so that the games were consistant with each other. If you had more than 2 hearts in SMA1, you dont shrink until you have 1 heart left. SMA2 had the shrink thing changed a bit to be consistant with Mario Bros. 3 and Yoshis Island didnt really have any changes, except 6 brand new levels only on the GBA version.

So I guess in this order is the best to worst re-releases

Yoshi's Island (6 brand new levels)
Super Mario Bros. 2 (Gameplay fixed for a more Mario/arcadish feel
Mario Advance 3 (Dead e-reader support, hot-seat 2 player)
Mario Advance 2 (Luigi's physics altered)

About SMA4 e-reader support. It's really a shame that we didn't get anything beyond series one and two. Through a friend of mine, I've managed to play the other 20 or some new levels that have been released since 1 and 2. It makes me wish the e-reader and the series 1 and 2 cards did better here cuz some of the levels are truly awesome. Having the cape feather and the Mario World item box doesn't hurt either .

Stop using the Super Mario Advance numbering system. I'm getting confused. Say "Super Mario World" or "Super Mario Bros 3" or else I have no idea which title is which.

Not only that but to be consistent with later releases in the same franchise. Yoshi for example developed a really lame voice in Yoshi's Story so they changed his voice in the GBA remakes to match. The problem is when Nintendo makes these changes the new stuff isn't always something the long time fans even like. Sure Mario has a voice in all post-Mario 64 games so in theory it makes sense to add that voice to the remakes. However his voice SUCKS and the lack of it in the earlier titles is good. I've never met a person who played the 2D Mario games when they were current that likes Mario's voice.

Nintendo games have arguably gotten easier over the last few years so the remakes have their difficult lowered to fit better with today's audience. Agan that's a BAD change and one that makes the remakes inferior to the original designs.

The remakes are made for the 10 year old Nintendo fans that have never played anything from before the N64 and are accustomed to sh!tty voices and low difficulty. While I think it's good to get newer gamers familiar with these classic titles I would prefer it without the revisionist history. Otherwise they're not being given proper exposure to past gameplay design.

The NES Classics series is a much better way to release those old titles. They're just too expensive.

Don't get me started on the NES classics; I would argue they should've compiled titles like Ice Climber, Excitebike and Donkey Kong (which STILL doesn't have the 4th level), while Super Mario Bros and Zelda remained seperate. But that would be too convienent....

If Nintendo re-released Mario All-Stars, I would just go "F Nintendo", and trade my SP. I'm sure even the most loyal of the loyal have limits.

The only change I noticed in SMB3 was that you'd go back to the mushroom if you got hit instead of shrinking completely (though that might have been like that in the original as well, I lost my All-Stars cartridge) and the game seemed slippier than before.

I don't think they modified the difficulty at all. Its exactly the same as my nes versions except the grpahics and sound.

SMB3 changes from the original.
More coins.
More 1up possibilities
Floating Spade card on map appears a LOT more frequently
Some fire spitting pirahna plants were changed to regular
In world 6, you no longer have to beat that one level to get to the mushroom house, they gave it an alternate path.
Boo didley moves A LOT slower now. (WHY?!?!?! BOOOOOOOO)
Instant special power when small if you touch a fire flower or leaf. Used to just be the equivalent of the mushroom if small.

However, I can think of a couple changes that went the other way:
It's harder to defeat bowser now cuz the spot you have to stand in a slightly different spot to make him crush the right blocks.
Especially noticable in the sky levels, because of the screen, Lakitu and the mad sun is positioned lower than in the original, making it slightly tougher to avoid their attacks.

On a slightly unreleated note, anyone remember what they did with Level 5 on LTTP for GBA? LOL

I actually really liked the way they changed luigi for the remake of Super Mario World.
Gave it something unique, its an entirely different way to play the game.

I think this would actually potentially lose Nintendo money instead of making it. Aside from the lost levels and the possibility of more "authentic" experiences, it would offer nothing different from the Super Mario Advance versions already out there, and it would potentially kill the sales of the Advance versions of SMB2 and SMB3 .
I've played the original games, and I like Mario's voice just fine. I do think Nintendo over uses it on the Gameboy, though.

Well, it'd also offer SMB1--but that's also available as both the Classic Series SMB, and SMB DX for GBC, which had the Lost Levels as well.

Jep, it's the japanese SMB2 aka The Lost Levels.
I'll go hunting down SMBDX, wanted to have that game for quite some time now. I prefer SMB1/LL's physics over SMB3's.

I think this whole thing was really cheap and I swore I wouldnt buy any of these remakes when I first got a GBA, but I own all of them now...

If you think this is bad, Rare made Donkey Kong Country for both GBC and GBA, and neither completely retain the graphics of the original and try to add cheapass minigames.

I actually emailed Nintendo about Series 3 and 4 last month, and to my surprise they answered me back rather quickly. I didn't save the email, so I can only give you the gist of it, but what he said was that Series 3 and 4 WEREN'T cancelled and they WERE still coming out, (he actually seemed quite adament that they ARE coming) they just don't have a release date yet.
After getting that reply, I noticed that Nintendo had changed the Series 3 and 4 listings on their website from "Q1 2004" to just "Announced"...

man, luigi in SMW advance made the game so easy. When u had the cape, with him flying became so easy. Too easy. Nintendo is trying to compensate for the small screen by making it easier. which in my opinion, doesnt really matter. The games are still a little easy. I wish they hadn't changed the power up system. oh well.

I'm new here, and a Mario fan. Hi!
I'm returning to handheld gaming after a LONG hiatus.

I wasn't aware that any changes at all had been made in these classic releases!

My wife and I stormed the 1st SNES Mario World back when we were first dating.
(SNES is still hooked up downstairs)

I just bought a GBA SP NES Edition, and simply picked up where I left off when I gave away my original GB 14 years ago.
That's right, I'm working through SuperMarioLand 3 - Wario Land!

I was thinking I would simply play each one in the series through, working my way up to the GBA releases.

Just picked up SuperMario Advance 1 on Ebay, and look forward to re-visiting SuperMArio World again too.
