X-box and GC Freeloader?
« on: May 29, 2004, 03:00:31 AM »
Hi i live in the UK at the moment but will shortly be moving to America. I get the impression that Freeloader will enable me to play my UK games on an American console, is this correct?

Also if anyone knows a similar device that will let me do the same with my xbox it would be much appreciated. I have looked and there doesn't seem to be a Freeloader for X-box.

Thanks

Jack

For XBox and PS2 you need a mod chip. I'm not sure how legal that is (especially in America the DMCA can become a problem). Doing so will permanently ban your console from Live! if you try to log on with the chip enabled.

Yeah, it should work. You may run into some trouble with PAL games that don't have a 60hz mode, though. Er, unless American TV's support 50Hz? I dunno. =o

Make sure you buy a multi-system TV in US.  Then you should be alright with PAL games that run at 50Hz, methinks.

Just hold B as you start up a PAL TV and it will ask you if you feel like playing in 60Hz. Well most games.

Actually, saying most games would be a mistake, and you also don't need to hold B every time to get the option to switch to it.

The majority of first and second party games support 60hz mode (although not all of them -- Wave Race doesn't, for example), but with third party games it's a lot rarer, especially if they're multiplatform. EA for one never utilize the feature, and there are many others. It's really a hit and miss situation as to whether a game will support it or not.

And like I said, you don't need to hold down B every time you start the console. You just need to do it once, and then the option to choose 60hz mode will appear every time until you select 50hz mode. If you select that, you'll need to hold down B again next time you turn the console on to get the option for 60hz mode back.

Hope that helps you in some way.

About 75% of my games have 60Hz. Every decent game has the mode, only very old or niche games and shoddy PAL conversions don't.

Sorry, did you say every decent game has a 60hz mode? Ikaruga doesn't. XGRA doesn't. Wave Race doesn't. Beyond Good & Evil doesn't. Not a single EA game does. TimeSplitters 2 doesn't. Tony Hawk's Underground doesn't. Those are just some extremely good games which don't have a 60hz mode, and there are plenty more. Like I said, it's simply factually inaccurate to say most GameCube games have a 60hz mode. Taking the library as a whole, I'd say no more than 30-40% do. As long as you only buy Capcom, Nintendo or generally GameCube-exclusive titles, then yes most will have a 60hz mode. But there are plenty of great games out there which don't.

*happens to have the Japanese version of Ikaruga, enjoys 60hz goodness*
And saying that XBRA is extremely good is debatable.
The only games I own that don't support 60Hz are Wave Race and Lost Kingdoms, and I have other third party games too (Sega ones.)

Maybe he doesn't want to have some dude break his Xbox in half to cram a chip that was most likely taken from an Atari Lynx. =O

Well there you go, only Wave Race is without the 60Hz in my awesome collection of games.

Im sure you can get a freeloader for PS2 anyway.
