Sony's Cell processor
« on: May 26, 2004, 03:30:23 PM »
It's just been reported that Sony's Cell processor will appear in televisions.  Now I don't know what functions they envision for using it in TV's but this news ultimately means the Cell will be alot cheaper to manufacture since there will be alot more uses for it and more made.  Cell TV

Well its a processor. So ultimately these appliances could be more 'intelligent' but there's only so much you can make a television or fridge do so it seems to be a waste of processing power.

supposedly, from my understanding on the cell chips, is that they put them in every sony product, and when you connect these products together the chips can communicate or work together.

That is supposed to make you want to go out and buy more Sony products so eventually your entire entertainment center will be one huge super computer with alot of processing power.

I don't exactly know what you are to do with all of these 'communicating' chips and all of that processing power.  But when you find out, then you'll know that cell is the future!

Just you wait.

One day, all these Cell products will fly from our grasps and head to the North Pole, where they will form:

Aside from SkyNet I can't think of any uses for having a Cell in every household appliance. Hey, maybe PS3 games will have requirements like "base unit + 2 toasters + 1 fridge"...

No, because the allmighty EMOTION ENGINE!! will stop them.

Cell is supposedly a supercomputer-on-a-chip processor. Four cores, I think was the last estimate.

Try 32-64, and the processor itself is similar to a supercomputer, but it will not be one.  the idea of putting many cores on a single chip is not new, it started with the dual core Power 4 chip, and is just an extension of massively parallel computing.  (By the way, there will be a supercomputer version of the cell design, produced by IBM, it is code named Blue Gene.  It is expected to reach bout 384 Teraflops.)

As for sony's marketing of it, who gives a damn where they put it in?  Did you know that intel has been showing off high quality HDTVs?  Did you know that IBM still makes clocks?  Did you know that 3M owns a mine?  Either way, who cares, sony will never be able to make cell in a toaster, this isn't a bluetooth alternative, this is just a way to show what sony wants to happen, not what they expect to happen.

Why would anyone want to put a processor in a toaster? What happened to "Keeping an eye on it while it toasts". A grand vision Sony may have, but dictors have grand visions too and they arn't that hot either.

It's not like only Sony is making a processor that can be put in TV's, DVD players, etc. AMD looks like it is jumping in on the action:

AMD Geode

Very low power use, and relatively high processing power.

And to tell you the truth, I don't think Sony's Cell Processor is going to be anywhere near as great as they make it out to be.

Very low power use is a must.

It will be when you put 100's of them together.  Cell is designed for scalability, the more you put together the more powerful they become, because they start to act as one.  Thats why if they put them in all of their products and you can somehow connect these products together, you will eventually have your own supercomputer in your living room/kitchen/bathroom/bedroom/office/house.

**atleast that is my understanding of it.......

Either way, thats the way that technology is going.

You think that AMD thing is neat? Have you seen the latest via processors?  3W at 1Ghz 20 at 2Ghz.  Thats a hell of a chip considering that my 486 runs warmer than that.
