Sega Dreamcast 2????????????
« on: May 01, 2004, 10:16:27 PM »
Lol there is a rumor that Sega might unviel big news about a possible next system.  Apparently they have mailed out a bunch of letters to people to their special event at E3.  The news note is on gamespot.com rumor control section.

Personally i would think that would be very interesting to see and Micro$oft would be pissing their pants for the japanese market but at the same time i think yeah right like thats gonna happen.

Considering the fact that Sega just announced the Shining Force games for the PS2 and GBA, no way...

But a merger, on the other hand.......

It would be cool, but I don't think it's in Sega's best interests right now.  What I DO think is in Sega's best interests would be focusing it's efforts more towards one console (preferably GameCube ).  I think the multi-console approach the company has taken has split up it's fanbase and is making it harder for their more obscure games to make a big profit.  If I'm a Sega fan I can have Skies of Arcadia on the GameCube, Jet Set Radio on the Xbox, or Vectorman on the PS2, but there's nowhere where I can buy all three.

Totally agree with couchmonkey.  Sega should go exclusive.  Nintendo seems to be the only one that i think they would possibly join.  I wouldn't think they would partner with sony fully because sony is practically what finalized their demise and Sonic wouldn't sell well in Xbox's market demographic.  Nintendo looks to be perfect for them, Sonic would fit perfectly with nintendo and almost all their other game franchises would beat competition easier on GCN than on Sony.

Heck i wish they did this in the first place, maybe i could have had a decent sports game, i just hate it when they go multiplatform, for example all star baseball was so good on N64 and then it went multiplatform and started to suck, mainly because of a handful of glitches.

The rumoured "NEO GEO" style business model does have potential though. If there is enough demand for home consumers to pay a premium for Atomisware arcade games, especially in the KING of FIGHTERS line up from Playmore SNK, and for SEGA arcade games the Sammy will release the Atomisware. SNK floated for over a decade serving a small but loyal group of arcades and home consumers, why can't SEGA hop on the band wagon.

Sammy has been very aggressive in steering a different path for Sega since buying in, and if there is a market for the home Atomiswave, they'll go after it.

"The rumoured "NEO GEO" style business model does have potential though."

I don't think it does.  When the Neo-Geo was at it's peak in popularity arcade style games where common on home consoles and arcade games had a huge technological advantage.  Now things are different.  Arcade games like Crazy Taxi often gets criticized for being too short and repetitive and thus no longer have the same mainstream appeal.  Home consoles are also as advanced as arcade machines so an arcade game like Soul Calibur ends up being even better on a console.  There's no reason to own a console specially designed to bring home authentic arcade games because the current consoles already do that and they have console exclusives as well.  Plus many of today's popular arcade games have gimmicky controls like DDR that can't be recreated in a home environment.

wouldn't it make even more sense for sega to develop (almost) every game for every platform, like it did with sonic heroes?  then they wouldn't have to worry about picking the "weakest" console or anyone missing its games.  certain games that sega can be sure wouldn't do well on certain consoles (like skies of arcadia on xbox) i can understand not porting over, but if sega limits itself to a single console without having second party status it would severely (and unnecessarily) hamper sales.  for an example, look what third party exclusivity it did for silicon knights.

This is a totally bogus rumor people.  I mean cmon how can you believe it?  Sammy even just bought the rest of Sega.  Their focus is going to be more on arcades now and less on consoles.  Not to mention Sega is now a third party company.  Sega fans, I am sorry, but there is not gonna be anymore hardware from them...besides, who cares anyway.  Sega has always had bad hardware, little third party support, and they would be the 4th console maker.  There is no room for 4.  Hell, I bet that APEX PC Gaming Console is gonna suck if they try and compete with the main three.  If you have ever bought a tv from them, you know not to buy anything else from them ever.

What ya talking about?  Anyway, it doesnt seem possible to have room for 4 consoles competition wise.  It is hard enough now with 3.  And your wise crack about the size of the XBox is childish and fanboyish.  Just cuz it is bigger than the other two systems doesnt make it bad.  It is cuz it has a hdd built in and ethernet which make it extra cool.  I am glad they have them in it.

My Laptop has all that plus a Li-Ion battery and a big LCD screen and it's smaller than the XBox (hell, you can get an entire PC that's smaller than the XBox!). MS is just awfuly inefficient in that respect.

I'm really late here, but I'll throw in my next two cents anyway... I guess my point is that Sega shouldn't be splitting it's fanbase across the consoles by releasing several exclusive games for each system.  If Sega could afford to release every game on all three systems that would be good too but I get the feeling that Sega doesn't think that's profitable, otherwise we'd see that strategy more often.  Either way, my point is that I think Sega's games aren't living up to their sales potential because of the way it is publishing almost every franchise exclusively on one console.
