Cube Wars Confirmed!....sorta
« on: April 19, 2004, 05:07:39 PM »
IGN Mailbag

In today's Mailbag, when a person asks about good party games to get, matt responds with some upcoming games. One of those games - Cube Wars!

Quote

Matt responds: There are some good multiplayer titles on the way, actually. You have the obvious ones: Mario Party 6, Super Monkey Ball 3, Metroid Prime (four-player deathmatch mode), Fire Emblem, Pikmin 2 (split-screen cooperative should cool), Cube Wars will be fun, Star Fox 2 will provide a serious deathmatch option, Geist should have a compelling four-player mode, and we can't forget about titles like Mario Tennis or Donkey Konga either.

I don't remember this ever being officially confirmed. Do you think this is supposed to be one of Nintendo's surprised E3 games that maybe Matt has slipped? Also, a reader at the very top asks about Sk and they restate that the news is indeed true, but who knows, let's all pray it's a hoax!

It was really only a matter of time, regardless of whether IGN is making an assumption or not- every Nintendo console except for the N64 has had a Wars game, so I don't see why they'd skip the Gamecube, especially not after announcing Fire Emblem.

True, but I don't think it has made the leap to full 3D has it? (making it not as expected) Just like Fire Emblem, but I don't follow FE so I could be wrong. Hopefully since the GBA Wars did well here, they'll localize this for us cuz it would be a pretty cool game!

It's a simple 3D look with semi-cel-shaded character models.  Current screenshots show the game at this point is not very detailed.

Because they skipped the N64?    Just messing around, but every console except the N64 is what... two out of three?

There has been a Famicom Wars, Super Famicom Wars, Advance Wars, and now will be Cube Wars...But this news was pretty much expected since the "rumor" of the game has been around as long as a GC version of Fire Emblem...

And jmoe, Professional is talking about Fire Emblem...

Wow, I totally skimmed over that mailbag and completely missed that.  It makes total sense to make a Cube Wars since it not only is a major hit that should attract some GBA users to the Cube but also because realitically it could use the exact same engine as Fire Emblem.  I'm actually surprised that Fire Emblem was revealed first.  Since the Wars games are like the Fire Emblem games but more basic it would make more sense to develop that game first and build and improve off it's design for Fire Emblem.

Though the question remains.  Does IGN actually know there's a Cube Wars in the works or are they just guessing?

The question is: Who will be developing it? Since Intelligent Systems got their hands full and everything.

"Who will be developing it? Since Intelligent Systems got their hands full and everything."

Considering those guys in a little over two years have managed to crank out two Advance Wars games, two Fire Emblem games, and two Metroid games for the GBA I'm sure they can handle two Cube games at once.

I don't think it has been two years. And Metroid Zero Mission weren't developed by them, only Metroid Fusion. But I get your point. That's the thing, I don't know if they'll use the engine of FE:SnK for it. It seems it be a lot more complicated when you want to develop in 3D. GBA games are much easier and faster to develop. Since the two Advance Wars and Fire Emblem's have the same engine, it's even easier.

And they're busy developing Paper Mario 2 as well. So we'll just have to wait and see. I like my Advance Wars 2D and portable anyway. I don't know about you though.

In short, the rumor is Kuju are making a "strategy focused" game with action elements.

Wha? Is Kuju Entertainment any good? I usually don't like development teams stationed in Great Brittain.

Well, they made Reign of Fire. Really, though, they're in the same boat as N-Space- they're a small developer who doesn't have enough clout to do their own games and gets contracted, I would assume, by large publishers to make games like these (N-Space's credits include Mary-Kate and Ashley Sweet 16). All in all they're most likely a very talented group of people that just haven't had their time to shine until now.

It's actually rumored that Kuju is working on an FPS that will have added vehicular combat, but you never know...

if it is a fps with vehicular combat mixed in, I hope its somewhat like helo or the new unreal tornament but with a big enphasise on story.  IF there is a cube wars, hopefully it'll have an FREE online mode for battles.  The gba games are tight.

Hmmmm, i'm not sure if i like what i hear. From IGN:
Quote

But don't expect a full-blown RTS here. This is much more of an action game set to the Advance Wars universe. You'll be able war in fully 3D environments and command your units in real-time.

But... but... Advance Wars isn't supposed to be real time. They better not screw this up.

Sounds to me like an action type game. Kinda like their Reign of Fire game... and nothing like Advance Wars/Fire Emblem

That's not a Wars game.  It's an action game with the Wars name attached.  If Nintendo isn't going to give us a "true" Cube Wars they should just make this a completely new franchise.  Though I suppose it's possible that it's a different game and IGN is just assuming it would be called Cube Wars.

Lately though Nintendo doesn't seem to "get" why people like their franchises.  We like them because they're great games, not because of the name or the content.  Star Fox is popular because it's a great 3D shooter.  The Star Fox characters have no real affect on it's popularity which is why virtually everyone was pissed off when Dinosaur Planet became Star Fox Adventures.  Warioland is a popular series on the Gameboy yet Wario World was poorly received because it was a completely different game that had nothing to do with the classic Gameboy series.  Pokemon Colosseum was a 3D Pokemon RPG but it had no resemblance to the 3D Pokemon RPG the fans had been asking for for years.  Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles is a good game in it's own right but it is far from what people were asking for when they said they wanted Final Fantasy on Gamecube.  The name is just a name.  The gameplay is what matters.

I want to see a Cube Wars game released but I want it to play similar to Advance Wars.  Otherwise it's not the game we've asked for.

It was pretty damn close to it...A perfect representation for a first try...

As always, the "fans" expect way too much, sometimes even more than what is feasible...
