Zelda makes much more sense than Mario to go RPG style.  Just look at it.  A lot of the things in the game are what you would find in an RPG.

But Mario RPGs have been established already. They have a huge fan following. I'm sure Zelda could easily do the same, but quite frankly, I don't want that. I like Zelda the way it is. Not that I don't want innovation in Zelda games; I just don't want a full out RPG.

A zelda RPG would be great, so long as Link isn't in it.  The Zelda RPG could carry the Zelda label, but it would introduce  characters from the main story that played a role in the series.  We could have new hero who teams up with Zelda and the sages to battle the forces of evil during the times when Link doesn't appear to save the Hyrule or whatever land he was suppose to save.  It would be a story that takes place in-between the main Zelda stories.  I can already picture it...

To make it easy for the thread starter:

Skies of Arcadia Legends
Evolution: Worlds
Lost Kingdoms (AKA Rune)
Lost Kingdoms II
Baulder's Gate: Dark Alliance (can be found in most offbeat stores for a mere $8)
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life
Animal CRACK-er, Crossing
Future Tactics: The Uprising
Medabots Infinity
Gladius
MegaMan X: Command Mission
Summoner: A Goddess Reborn (pretty damn good PS2 port, plus extras)
XMen Legends (not sure if this has been cancelled or not)
Yu Gi Oh!! ( I won't bother with the subtitle, simply because I hate this franchise)
Tales of Symphonia (due out in a few months)
Baten Katos (also due out in a few months)
Phantasy Star Online: Episodes I and II
Phantasy Star Online: Episode III C.A.R.D. Revolution
Pokemon Colesseum (well, it's sort of an RPG since it has more elements from the main GBA series)

Bascially pick through this selection here, read up on them, and pick up/rent whatever seems more attractive to you.  And because you said you like hack-n-slash action such as Diablo, Hunter: The Reckoning isn't half-bad, though not quite an RPG.

Also, keep an eye out for any new GCN offerings from Square/Enix, as I'm SURE another FF and/or DragonQuest will make their way in due time.

What do you mean, "sort of"?  It is an 100% RPG...

Making a Zelda game without Link? Other games tried that type of approach (Metal Gear Solid 2, Crono Cross) and were bashed by the fans. Youy gotta keep Link

Actually Pokemon Colesseum is basically porting your pokemon from the GBA versions to duke it out in a 3d environment.

There is a single player mode (story mode) which is kinda like the RPG aspect from the GBA games where you go around a virtual world and collect and battle pokemon but it's pretty thin (plotwise)  and short (10 hours).

I was saying that, between GBA and console versions, the console version of Pokemon have so-far been primarily just a large area to stage your Pokemon, instead of a full-blown adventure like the GameBoy classics.

Colesseum is much more like GBA Pokemon than Stadium 1 or 2, but lacks a little less than the handheld counterpart in terms of depth, IMO.

Sorry for any confusion on this.

What's the big deal?  It's not like the adventure Zelda games wouldn't still exist.  They still make Mario platformers don't they?  The Legend of Zelda RPG would be a spin-off series.

I have wanted a Zelda RPG since I saw how well it worked for Mario.  If I was to design it it would feature the following:

- not cel-shaded graphics.  It would look more like Skies of Arcadia.
- like in the Mario RPGs battles are not random.  The enemies are all visible.
- Link is naturally the main character.  Other members of the party include Zelda (who can transfrom from Zelda to Sheik) and some other guys like a Goron and a Zora.
- The game is full 3D with no fixed camera angles.  Areas are wide 3D open areas each around the size of the world in Ocarina of Time.  An overworld map seperates these areas thus making the complete world quite large.
- Level up system is similar to Super Mario RPG so the highest level isn't some stupid low amount like five.
- Battles are turn based and very similar to Mario RPG.  Realtime interaction like timed hits are present but unlike M&L are not required to play the game.  MP is for each character rather than shared like in Mario RPG.  Each character has character specific abilities beyond regular attacks and spells.  Link for example can use his bow or boomerang for different effects.  Some enemies may require you to use certain abilities and items.
- Aside from the battles the rest of the game is all in real time.  Link can interact with objects like he can in the other Zelda games and all the puzzles are in real time.
- Like in Paper Mario Link can attack an ememy before the battle and thus get a pre-emptive strike.  Enemies can however do the same to Link.
- Like in most Zelda games the game will require you to travel between parallel worlds.  Either different dimensions or different time periods.  Whatever fits the story better.
- Link never talks like how Mario never talks in Super Mario RPG.

That pretty much sums up my vision of a perfect Zelda (turn-based) RPG...Having either a Zelda RPG or Action/RPG would be pure gaming bliss...

GC is not the system for you if you like RPGs. Try SNES or PSone...

But, anyqays, Pokemon Colusseum, Tales of Symphonia, and Baten Kaitos are a few to get if you own a GC and an RPG fan...
