I was at work today, putting up the latest shipment of Gamecube games. As I put up some restock of Mario Sunshine, I looked at the row of Player's Choice titles and thought to myself, "I wonder why they don't make a series for undersold, yet brilliant games?" You know, games that, despite how good they are, they either can't sell or are overshadowed by other games.
My idea of such a series, it would be similar to the Player's Choice titles, but with a silver strip along the top that says "Critic's Choice". The price would also be dropped to the 20-30 dollar range, similar to the PC titles.

I think it would be a great idea for excellent games to get some time in the sun. It could also catch the eyes of some casual gamers if a holographic silver was used in the top banner. Games like Eternal Darkness, Beyond Good and Evil and Skies of Arcadia Legends could have a second chance to find an audience.
What do you guys think? And what other games do you think would benefit?

They probably should do that. I'd like to see ED and Pikmin, Burnout2 and some titles that came to GC as late ports, maybe spurring a few more sales.. Hitman 2, Baldurs gate and Splinter Cell. Its a good idea, and one wonders why its not done. It would be like a re-release almost, and maybe developers would welcome it as well and not burn the GC with furutre cancellations. Wishful drinking perhaps...

That's a great idea. Sega recently announced they're re-releasing Skies of Arcadia in Japan at a budgeted price. There may not be the label but it's pretty much that very idea put into action. I think this would be a great way to not only bring some attention to ignored classics but it also advertises the Cube as a hardcore critically acclaimed console if it has all of these critic's choice titles. Plus if used correctly the label could be associated with quality which would result in better sales. The idea is to get people to see the banner, think "hey that's a critic's choice game. It must be pretty good." and then buy the game.

That *is* a great a idea. With a cut price tag, it would really help to move titles that would otherwise remain on store shelves.

I would put Eternal Darkness at the top of the list. Even though, with the new players choice standards, ED has sold enough to be a players choice title. Nintendo change the amount from one million to 400K copies sold world wide, and ED sold about 280k copies in the US alone, puting it well over 400k world wide.

I like the Critic's Choice idea.

It made me thought of an "Overrated" label! Put 'em on games that are vastly overrated and don't deserve the millions of sales; like Final Freaking Fantasy.

Bah, the chances of that happening is 1:10000000000........just my crazy head going wild.

The game that'd I'd have to say to go on there is Super Smash Bros. melee (JK). One I would want to see is that game Vexx. My roommate got it and it's pretty damn hard, making you do all this insane platforming elements (y'all should go check it out, only 20$). Another one would have to be Ikaruga....even though it's selling pretty cheap now. Games that shouldn't be hailed "Critic's Choice" : Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Enter the Matrix.....BAH!!

You know, thats actually a good idea, the "Critic's Choice" label!
Eternal Darkness is the best forerunner for that title.
Although the fact that it creates extra work for NIntendo (especially here in Australia) means that it won't be happening anytime soon.

Basically just expand the players choice problem solved. And players choice kinda sounds better but gamer choice and hardcore gamer choice would be rad.

Critics choice sounds better, cause with gamer's choice or hardcore gamer's choice just sounds like nintendo is desprately trying to sound cool or something.

Critics Choice is a marvelous idea, they should just replace the player's choice with the Critics Choice.

I would say Eternal Darkness, Gladius, Animal Crossing.

I would also add a lot of quoted reviews on the back and the covers i.e. "PlanetGameCube 10 out of 10"

I think that diminishes the look of the back. I'd rather keep the details and specs on the back and keep the quotes off.

Wow, you would have thought that a great idea like this would have come by now, with three big competitors who are each trying to gain the edge. I wish that someone here had connections with Nintendo to make it actually happen.

The Critic's Choice idea is neat, but who would decide on these titles. When the requirement is so vague, it would be hard to control. With a bit of a set requirment, such as the Player's Choice titles have, you can be sure of the content. With a catagory of games that make the cut because critics liked them and they didn't sell well, you really aren't sure what you will get. Who can tell us what games are good other than us? Buying a critics choice game would be sort of like buying a game based only on a review, and we all know that is a bad idea.

Now, I am not bashing Eternal Darkness or SoA or any other such game as I do own and enjoy them. It is just that this idea seems to be something that works better on paper than in real life.

It would work okay if they had very specific requirements. Say that after a year if the game has sold too little to be a Player's Choice and it has an average percentage on Game Rankings of 80% or more it's a critic's choice title. Since Game Rankings takes an average of all the major reviews it's the most unbiased source for determining a title as being "critically acclaimed".

I'd say budget editions shouldn't have any requirements at all. If they want to sell it cheaper they should be free to do so.

If you have no requirements than EVERY game that doesn't sell will become Critic's Choice. It would completely ruin the whole idea.

They already are free to do so, they don't need a little banner, just a lower sticker. That is something people notice.

The banner is probably to attract casual gamers. Probably they will think like this: OOHHHH thats a players choice/greatest hit/platinim hit ohhh this then must be good and those other games with out this stickers must suck then. I wish 2D games where more widely produced on home consoles but i guess thats now a cult of retro gamers requests that wont be answered.
