All these Mario titles, WHERES MARIO DODGE BALL!
« on: February 08, 2004, 01:00:04 PM »
Years and years of Mario being in soo many titles. Mario Tennis, Mario Kart, Mario Party, ect.. All multiplayer games that all the Mario Characters get together and have a grudge. You take any sport and Mario can put some jazz into it and make it an exciting game that gets you and your friends on the edge of your seats. Back in the day of NES, they have Super Dodge Ball, which was brought out for the GBA. It's a really good game, and I've been playing it in the years of my life since it came out. So when is Mario and friends taking this sport and making it into a game of their own. Every character could have a special throw, like how Megaman Soccer (Which was an AWESOME game, what happened to that too?) had special powers for everyone, and different stats. Does anyone else see that this would fit in the Nintendo family perfectly?

I dont think itd sell that well.  Its not the fact it might be a good game idea its if itd sell and it most likely wouldnt.  Maybe an idea for a mario party mini game though.

Very cool indeed. I hope Mario Party 6 has a cool "sports" section, where you can play volleyball, hockey, basketball, soccer, dodgeball etc..

That would be cool.

Mario Bros in: The Latest Pimped Out Franchise 3!

put mario in too many sports games and he won't be the tubby mario we know and love, and that would be a global tragedy, and i won't sit idly by and let that happen by gum.

I see where you guys are coming from, though I think it would still do better as a game in itself than im Mario Party. Mario Party is a great game, and they should leave the mini-games the way they are and not get to sporty. I mean, if people have given Mario Tennis and Golf a shot, (Two sports that aren't really mainstream commercial sports) then why not this? If you can create a game like Super Dodgeball that was great, how wouldn't this work. Again, it's all in my opinion. Maybe they should just create a Mario Sport Edition so that they aren't making constant side games like that, and put them all on one disc?

Why not a wrestling game with Mario in it? Imagine the power ups and weapons you could bring into the ring.lol I bet Nintendo could make a better game than THQ- almost anybody could IMO.

I agree with Zoidberg.  I think.  If he thinks Mario gets pimped out to too many game then I agree with him.  If he's worried about Mario losing weight by participating in too many sports ("he won't be the tubby mario") then I, um, guess I agree with him though it's not a major concern.  Maybe I'm just reading too far into his choice of words.

Anyway I personally think Mario has been overexposed and that's why Super Mario Sunshine didn't sell as much as it should have.  Most people just see at least one Mario title on the shelves every year so they fail to get the significance of a new Mario platformer.  These endless Mario sequels are also creating a stigma that Nintendo isn't innovative and just releases the same crap over and over again like some Japanese THQ.

Personally I think Mario should be limited to only three series: platformer, kart racing, and RPG.  One kart racing game and one RPG is released every generation while two platformers are released each generation.  That way at most Mario has only four games released every five years thus keeping him more fresh and making each individual release a big deal.  Those three series are the only ones the fans really go nuts over anyway.  Does anyone really NEED to have another Mario Golf game released?  Oh Mario can continue to be in Smash Bros as well of course.

Not only would this make Mario seem like a bigger deal but it also would free up other devs who work on those spinoffs (Hudson, Camelot) to make something original thus giving Nintendo consoles a wider variety of titles.  Nintendo NEEDS some new stuff anyway since, judging by Cube sales, Mario doesn't sell consoles to non-Nintendo nuts anymore.  Nintendo is arguably the most innovative developer on the planet.  They should NOT have a reputation for being sequel crazy.

yeah that's what i ment, and that second part was a mostly non serious reason for why i don't want Mario to be in too many sports games.

No, but I need Mario Tennis...

Yeah but Nintendo still gets the reputation.  People see Mario everywhere and think Nintendo is all rehashes.  It makes no difference if technically it's another developer making those games.

Yeah but what exactly would you unlock in mario dodgeball, all the coures would have to be almost exactly alike besides the surrounding art etc.  Even if you could unlock new characters and stuff the game would get really tiring.  Mario golf has a purpose to it and doesnt get old as fast I guess.  Mario tennis well i dunno but i know its suppose to be a good game.  This would do much better as a party game as i said before.

actually, if someone with some creativity tackled this, it could be a lot of fun.  who is to say every match has to be a standard dodge ball court?  how about some mazes/buildings with stuff to hide behind?  if someone actually put some thought into it, they could easily make it a really fun game, I think.

I completely agree with this.  The Zelda franchise which is spinoff free, other 4 swords which keeps the essence of Zelda and the upcoming tetra's trackers (hope they can it), will forever be one of the most anticipated franchises ever.  It is almost unfair that they sacrificed mario and crew to make a lot of those titles work.  But Bill I'm with you, I NEED Italian Plumbers playing tennis.

i dont really see the big deal with the spin offs.  the main Mario games is what gamers really clamor for.  I think of Mario Tennis, Golf, Smash Bros., etc. as Nintendo games, not Mario games.  I kinda wish more of spin offs had more non-Mario related characters the way the Smash Bros games do (assuming Link and Samus are in Melee, of course).

The way I see it, if Nintendo is going to make a (non-realistic) tennis game it might as well feature Mario characters. Sure, Nintendo could create a bunch of original, wacky characters for a tennis game but what would be the point to that? Most people aren't going to grow attached to characters in a tennis game and without the familiar mascots, the game wouldn't sell nearly as well. I'm all for Nintendo creating original characters and potential new mascots but they don't belong in tennis games - or golf, kart racing, party games, etc...

As for the argument that the spin-off games hurt the "main" games. There is something to that. Sure, Mario Party 4 probably hurt sales of SMS but so did Metroid Prime, Animal Crossing, Star Fox Adventures and all of the other games that were released around the same time. A wider selection of games is bound to hurt the sales of individual games but it's worth it. The amazingly strong sales of key N64 titles like SM64 is kind of spoiled by the fact that they only sold that well because they had such little competition.
For the sake of diversity in line-up, I think Mario is doing Nintendo more good by appearing frequently in all these different genres than he would be if he only appeared every three or four years in the exact same genre.

I love all the Mario spin-off games and I'm clearly not the only one considering how well they continue to sell. So I say keep them coming.
Who knows, Mario Dodgeball could be to Nintendo's next console what Mario Kart was to the SNES. It could be PERFECT for online play too.

I see a lot of good points in this. I like that you guys did open my mind towards this and I do agree with you. Nintendo though is a very inovative company and I don't think they would create this game and bring it out, unless they worked hard to make it different and creative. We all know they wouldn't just throw out slop, especially with a Mario name. Nintendo has it's own line of characters, I mean it doesn't even have to be just the Mario Crew.. It could be like SSB, with all the characters in the Nintendo family. Putting Mario in a game though creates a different and fun twist, but also makes you automatically comfortable with the characters we all grew up to love. There have been a lot of games Nintendo has brought out that people doubted, that were actually really good. I'm just saying, it would be a good game if they put thought into. It IS possible, but likely, no. Online play would be good for this, and putting different obsticles or maybe power ups like shields. Though, point is taken and I see where you guys are coming from. In all of seriousness though, it was just a thought of a game. Just throwing out ideas. I'm in Game Design and Developing, so I'm just trying to see what people like and don't like. It's all in fun. Nintendo has the most lovable and recoginzed characted in videogame history though, why wouldn't you use them? Though, Repetiveness makes things boring and dull. All in all, Everyone made very good points and thank you for your input.

Mario Basketball!  The fans want it!  And baseball, and football...ooh, Peach tackling Luigi, I can think of the two-timer jokes already...

But I'm serious.  Basketball with Mario would work so well; and they could have powerups and stuff.  It could be arcade style like NBA Jam!
