Cable Crisis!!! Please LOOK!!!
« on: February 03, 2004, 09:03:30 AM »
Ok... here is the deal.  I want to experience Metroid Prime in its full glory.  I now have a 41" Mitsubishi Provection Tv and a 6.1 Yamaha Sound System.  I can get a set of Component cables off of Nintendo's website, but I have no clue where to find GameCube Optical cables for the ProLogic sound.  I know that there are some other games that have ProLogic capabilities but none of them come to mind right now.  Someone please help me!  Ok... I'm done.

There's no such thing as optical cables for Dolby ProLogic.  Prologic simply uses the two stereo outputs and generates surround sound based off of that.  Besides, where would you plug in an optical cable on the back of your Cube?

I was thinking that but I didn't want to say it.  I thought that it might be like the XBox where you have to get the component cable to plug the optical into.  Damn... Why can't Nintendo be cutting edge and have surround.  Oh well, at least I get that one answered.  Thanks evilnate.

Pro logic 2 is pretty damn good if you have a proper stereo, and as was discussed in the other forum dolby digital does have a slight delay, making games very difficult to pull off.  The only thing you hear on an x-box that is dolby digital is background noise and completely canned sound effects.  If you like it, watch more movies, I want spur of the moment sound effects based on what I do in the game.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but I have read quite a bit on the subject.

Probably because Nintendo markets the cube as a gaming console not a hybrid like the Xbox or the PSX (the one with the internal hard drive).  It would be nice to see their next gen be marketed with a home theater 5.1/6.1 surround system in mind, but for some reason I am doubtin it.

GameCube [rather, GameCube games] does have surround via the previously mentioned Dolby Pro Logic II.  You don't "need" optical cables for surround.  Hell, my old VCR has "surround."  The ZSNES emulator supports surround (and it sounds damn good, seriously.  Try LttP or Seiken Densetsu 3).  PS2's SOCOM II and Castlevania: Lament of Innocence also ditched Dolby Digital 5.1 in favor of Dolby Pro Logic II -- 5.1 surround through your basic red/white RCA cables, not optical.

As for cutting edge, Star Wars Rebel Strike supports 7.1 surround through Dolby Pro Logic IIx.

7.1 surround.
