Madden 2005 may be canceled-hold your applause
« on: February 02, 2004, 04:25:10 PM »
This would be a huge mistake if allowed to happen.  No matter how many of you cant stand Madden, or any 'realistic' sports games, it would be a major blow to the GCs image.  Its not definate yet, but on Gamespot, there are reklease dates for the Xbox and PS2, but none for GC.  EA is throwing the 'no comment ' quote around which doesnt sound good.  Lets hope Nintendo pays to keep it, or at least offers incentives to keep it on GC.

It would be a HUGE blow to Nintendo- they'll never regain the number one spot without at least some sort of big sports game. Nintendo should definitely offer EA a little monetary incentive to keep it on the Gamecube- they'll be glad they did.

This is horrible. Probably one of the worst things that could happen to Gamecube is to lose Madden. What I'm scared of, is the loss of more support from EA, the number one publisher in the world. As far as I new Madden was selling better then all of the other sports franchises(NBA Live, NHL etc.), so if Ea pulls its sports line up from Gamecube, there will be nothing for people like my brother and I in the sports department. The Madden franchise is one of my favorites too. i would have to buy a PS2 or Xbox if they pulled support and I don't want to buy it for one game. Nintendo better secure this.

Without Madden, theres no more NFL games on the Cube, that would be terrible. Definetly not something Nintendo needs this year.

I wouldn't be too worried about it.  A lot of times the retailers jump the gun and do things on their own initiative, either because they want to pressure publishers into doing something that would be favorable for them, or because they mistake rumor for something more than rumor.

Now then, just think about the current state of the football game market:

Electronic Arts: Madden
Midway: Blitz Pro
Microsoft: NFL Fever
Sony: GameDay
Sega: ESPN Football
Acclaim: QB Club (in limbo)

Of the six main football game series, four aren't on Nintendo systems (the latter four), and one isn't a simulation (Blitz).  EA has a virtual football monopoly on the GameCube.

By the time the new wave of football games hit, there will be a lot of GameCubes in North America: Far too many for EA to not release what will basically be the only football game available for the system.

Nintendo better keep EA in the ship, but i still think they could spend some money and make their own NFL game as well. The SNES had a Nintendo Football game, and that franchise went the way of Ken Griffey MLB Baseball, and Kobe Bryant NBA....

If Ea does pull Madden off the Gamecube Nintendo better make one of their own. Madden is pretty much the only game I play until november when big games come out fo the holidays. It is key for the Gamecube because it is what the casual gamer wants. Though there arent that many casual gamers that have Gamecube at leasts the ones that are just casual would have Madden.

I thought N already gave EA incentives to keep them on the GC?

They could pull Madden from the PAL releases if they want, though, FIFA is their big game here.

Obviously, you're intelligent enough to realize its a huge blow to the GCs library, correct? Whether you or I love it or hate it, Madden is a neccessity.  Any sports hater can see that, despite what Drzoidberg/Bill say.

This wouldnt be an "Acclaim" or a Eidos... This would be a legitimate blow against the chances of Nintendos longterm succes.  Remember the Dreamcast didnt have EA support.

This would be bad, because if Madden, EA's biggest seller, can't make it on the Cube, then what about the NHL and NBA games?  Plus, I'm really looking forward to having MVP Baseball on the Cube.  I sure hope that doesn't get yanked.

Geesh, this is pure speculation. Stop worrying. N-Philes reported that GameSpot, or some online retailer, was taking pre-order for it for all the systems except Cube. Someone on their forums even wrote to the company who said they weren't denying the Cube version was coming, they just hadn't received official word. I'm willing to bet they haven't received official word on it for any console yet, but GC just got overlooked by some idiot in their web dept, now they're trying to cover up the error.

I don't know where the news that EA was taking the "No Comment" approach came from. They haven't said anything that I've heard, let alone "no comment". It seems like they're unaware of the whole thing. I was looking, and it does seem weird to me that the Cube version released last year one day after the other major ones. Why they did that I have no idea.

It is interesting to wonder just how important it is to the Cube though. The Cube version strangely does have the highest rankings from last year, but it didn't sell a ton. I'm pretty sure both Nintendo and EA can live without the 100,000 people who bought 2004.

The DC had a LOT more going against it than just lack of EA, but yeah even though I don't personally like the games (no matter what they do, they still feel too artificial to me) this ain't the slightest bit good if it's true.

By the way, whatever happened to the Play Action football series?  I think it might be high time to bring all of their sports franchises back.

Even though I personally couldn't give a sh!t the loss of Madden would be a pretty big deal.  As much as it just seems wrong Madden is usually one of the top sellers of the year and there is a fair sized chunk of casual gamers that play nothing but sports games and Madden in particular.  Not having Madden is likel not having GTA.  I don't think too many people bought a Cube specifically for Madden (those type of people usually would buy a PS2 for that purpose) but the fact that that game is not available is a reason not to buy a Cube.  If you want to make it in the console wars don't give people an excuse to not buy your console.  Nintendo has been pretty sh!tty at not giving people excuses but that's another topic.

I wonder why EA would do this anyway since the Cube recently had a sales increase.  If anything Madden 2005 will likely sell better on the Cube than 2004.  One thing that does bug me is that if EA is turned off by low sales those are partially their own fault.  The Cube version of Madden always comes out later than the other versions thus ensuring that anyone who owns a Cube and at least one of the other consoles will not buy the Cube version.  As it is only Cube exclusive owners will buy the Cube verison of Madden.  If there was a simultaneous release this wouldn't be as much of a problem.

This is always going to be a problem for Nintendo though if they don't do something about it.  Sports games don't sell on Nintendo consoles because sports fans tend to buy PS2s and Nintendo fans aren't as interested in sports titles.  Therefore Nintendo should make their own sports line.  It doesn't have to be a huge lineup or anything.  Football, hockey, baseball, and basketball should suffice for now.  They don't even have to release them every year.  They could alternate the releases by releasing football and basketball every odd year and the other two every even year.  This would give Nintendo an exclusive line of sports games thus giving sports gamers a reason to consider a Nintendo console and it would get Nintendo fans more interested in sports titles because they would be more willing to try something made by Nintendo themselves.

The amount of work needed to be done isn't so bad either.  Retro was already working on a football game so right there is a starting point that another developer (assigned to make just sports titles) can work from.  There already is an NBA Courtside game for the Cube thus having a completed design already in place to work from.  The other two have to be started from scratch but Nintendo does have to ability to use Seattle Mariner players as spokesmen.

well actually I ment for the entire game to be cancelled, not just for cube but for every platform, but like i said i don't want to enter into that argument, and now this rumour has been disproved this topic can decend to the depths of PGC.

If there's one sports game that does even slightly decently on the Cube, it's Madden.  I don't think EA wants to let the Cube go either; I'm thinking, "Madden 2005 and Six Months: Eat your Pants Off".  Personally, I don't care, I never liked football games much anyway...but we need CUBE TO BE NUMERO UNO AGAIN-O...o...
