Nintendo: Admitting Desparation and Defeat?
« on: December 23, 2003, 05:21:35 PM »
Until the year 2003, Nintendo had never been "in the red" (meaning losing money instead of gaining any profit). And to top that, Nintendo has announced that a new home console is in the works. I don't know about what all of you think, but I personally believe this is an act of desparation.

Think about it? No, seriously, do. Nintendo released the Game Boy Adavance SP in February (of 2003), and although a backlit handheld was greatly needed, why did they really do it? I hope it was to just please fans (and make a few grand while doing it). But this pattern of short-lived consoles reminds me far too much of Sega's last console days. Hurrying of software, and closing third parties. The Dreamcast's dwindling third-party lineup was definietely sharper and more obvious than Nintendo's, but still. The N64 lost virtually all third-party support by 1999 (much faster than GCN's slow drainage) and the GCN will probably follow suit.

So what does Nintendo do? Release an new system, and most likely the same problem will occur. But there is a very good chance that because of it's early launch it'll get a great head start on the competition. Let's all hope and, well, hope that Nintendo will not repeat it's patterns (as far as sales go, not quality and morals).

You do know that Nintendo practically owns the portable gaming market, right? In fact that whole situation with the GBA not having a light and then releasing the SP only two yeas later came about because they don't have any competition in that market.

You also realize that Nintendo is coming out with a new console because Sony and Microsoft are too, right? Besides we really don't know when they are releasing a new console. All we know is that they want to release their's with everyone else's. I really don't see that as desperation but rather just staying competitive.

Heck, Nintendo OWNS the handheld market, that's for sure!!!

But yeah, I was just saying that this early release of a next-gen console is really fast, right? I mean, I am not in the mood to dish out another $300+ for a new console and games. But still, remember Sega? Then again, they WERE in desperation mode!!

Sega were desperate to make money, because they were losing so much. Why would Nintendo be desperate?

Blame the short life span of this gen of consoles on Sony and Microsoft. They are the ones that are actually wanting to come out with new systems especially Sony since the PS2 is a year older than the other consoles. Nintendo actually wanted the GameCube to have an 8 year lifespan (according to Miyamoto) but they can't stand around with their thumb up their ass while Microsoft and Sony come out with new consoles now can they. This is all in reaction to what Sony and Microsoft are planning on doing so go whine about it on one of their boards. I'm not happy about the short lifespan either but Nintendo doesn't have a choice. It's just part of competition.

yeah... NINTENDO is loosing touch... everytime they post there quarterly earning, they post a lost in profit... there franchise is the only thing that keep them alive but compared to past games, the sales is getting lower each new installment...  i swear, if they dont straighten up next gen console, they are gonna loose it especially PSP is on the door step.

being different doesn't save u from a deep hole... if they want to introduce new kind of product... they better get the casual first to commit on ur system then introduce the quirky titles cuz quirky titles doesnt lure casual gamers.  lure the casual gamers by building a set top box then ur in business... ahhhhhhh who am i kidding they dont even listen to the fans...

Nintendo's only lost money for one quarter in 40 years, and the price drop assured a hefty profit boon for the year as a whole. As for lower software sales, besides the fact that all software sales are down regardless, there are now 3 major consoles, which lowers them even further.

If Nintendo had their way, we'd still be playing the NES- I don't mean that in a bad way, but the only reason Nintendo released the SNES was because Sega was gaining ground with the Genesis.

Go here to get a good idea of what I mean.

Oh, and I thought it was really clever how you turned around that thing I did to you.  You know, I said mister then put your sig in quotes, and you did the same thing, except with my sig!  Really witty!  I mean, how did you ever think of it. . . pure genius.  Do you do stand-up, because you are really good at this sort of thing.  Really.  That's so clever!

ohh okay... u got a point... but games isn't what im talking about... im talking about the system... if u look at my past post history, ive only been critical to NINTENDO system, not games but the system... if they would have listen that strictly for gaming machine isn't the future, they wouldn't have been struggling for 2nd place...  xbox is a good system except for a controller that is... who would have thought that hard drive is a good idea... it was fans input... playstion is a good example too...

ohh, if u like that clever remark, then u should have thank urself 'cuz u thought of it first... beside thinking of being sarcastic will get u laugh, well u probably dont have many friends...

So let me get this straight- you think Xbox and PS2 were "fan's input", when MS had to IMMEDIATELY do away with the "Duke" (also known as the Unicron controller) pad and Sony STILL has you buying MULTITAPS for 3+ player games?

Right, kid.  Next, please...

You know why Sony only has two controller ports, right? They claim that "multiplayer gaming isn't that popular". Of course, even if we completely ignore the success of multiplayer games on the Gamecube and XBox (hell, their respective bestselling games are VERY popular in multiplayer circles), the reason multiplayer games aren't popular on the PSX/PS2 is because they only have two friggin controller ports- it's kind of a self fulfilling prophecy, if you know what I mean.

Ok, I'm a new member of the pgc forums (which u can tell by my icon which is probably too big). In any case, I've beev reading this stuff for weeks, and here, finally, I've become to fed up to just read and wait for my heroes mouseclicker and mario to prove you ppl wrong in some way. So here I am, and I open my first post with an insult.

You're an idiot.

First and foremost. Look, nintendo in "desperation mode" just cuz they've lost a lil bit of money?

puh-leaze.

seriously. I'm not going to draw the "first time they've had a loss in so an so crap years" cuz that really doesn't matter. the point is they're losing money NOW right? I acknowledge that. While I wont play that overplayed card, i will state that microsoft is losing a WHOLE lot of more money.

Desperation mode? What, you kiddin me? You think they're in desperation mode cuz they've pushed forward some new products and plan to do so again this spring? You think they're in desperation mode cuz they've been advertising better, cuz their strategic price cut has given them such a gigantic boost? You think they're in desperation mode cuz they have SO many great games scheduled for 2004? Seriously? You wants that I should list them, damn straight I will.

Are you serious kid? I can't believe the words I'm reading here.

I can't conceive why in the world people always criticize the cube while comparing it to other consoles but never compare other console criticism with the cube. PS2 stands aside cuz face it, whether we like it or not it's whipping everything in sight (though the rush is started to slow down).

Everyone always compares the cube to the xbox but never the xbox to the cube. Frankly it pisses me off. You talk about nintendo losing money. Take one glance at microsoft. Losing soooooo much every second. The practically PAY the consumer to buy their product. Every xbox is money out of bill gate's pocket. People point this out from time to time but not as often as they screech like little girls being raped,

"Oooh! Oooh! Nintendo lost some money! Oooh! Downhill streak! Rape me please!"

So you say, heck it doesn't matter. That gates fellow, he's got more money then hicks have cousins. BUT SO DOES NINTENDO. Really, if nintendo wanted to, they could unlock their vaults and just spend, spend, spend, pushing everything they have, every last penny in every case possible to bribe ever 3rd partier, to build the ultimate money wasting machine, to advertise so much you'll have nintendo flyers coming out of your ass. THAT my friend, would be a desperation mode. And its kind of what microsoft is doing.

Am I saying xbox is in a "desperation mode"? By no means. Microsoft just has such a vast amount of money, they can keep spending like this in hopes that their xbox just might make a profit. This isn't desperation. Its just totalitarian greediness. They're main weapon is a checkbook, and it sure does seem to be sending xbox flyers up our asses.

Nintendo is just much, MUCH more smarter, and also very stupid at the exact same time. They try to make a profit as much as possible while putting out as much quality as possible. That is the beauty that is nintendo. And while they are kind of hardasses when it comes to spending, it seems like they're finally loosening up and it's actualy paying off. advertising is much better. could it improve? you betcha. 3rd party support is awesome compared to cube launchtime. could it improve? of course!

Will it?

Damn staight.

Desperation mode my ass....
