Console or PC??
« on: December 10, 2003, 06:18:26 PM »
What do you feel is more value for money?? Console's or PC's.  My opinion is a console hands down. They last 3-5 years without superseeding.  The graphics are fine. They cost much less than a PC. $250-$300 compared to $2000-$3000.  The games are about the same price.  PC's are more versatile but are much more likely to stuff up.   Anyway, these are my thoughts, what do you think??

Console gamer for life.  I don't even really buy PC games.  I have a gaming quality PC, but I don't really use the gaming portion of it.

The last PC game I got: Half-Life: Blue Shift...

I can't stand strategy games such as Starcraft, I can't stand Tycoon crap, and I especially can't stand MMORPGs!

I prefer console gaming over PC gaming every single day of the week. Screw PC. I will get my gaming needs from Nintendo.

Keep in mind asking a Gamecube forum which is better, PC's or consoles, is not going to get you the most unbiased of opinions.

While I do love PC games in every way, I have to go with consoles if only for the simple fact that PC games are an enormous hassle just to play. First you have to have a suitable computer, then you have to install the game, theen there's compatibility issues, patches, glitches, etc, etc. Whereas with consoles, you buy the game, pop it in, and start playing immediatley. That's the main reason I've drifted away from computer games and am now a solid console gamer.

Define better value, as in games only, or as in overall use.  Overall use pc's win hands down.

Well, unless you want to upgrade your PC every year to run a certain game, than I suggest you stick with consoles.

For gaming, i assume.

I too like consoles much better.  I have a few PC games, but too much configuration just to play a game,[ie] some games dont support my USB cube adapter, my graphics card is 1 year old, and its out of date...etc

I like 'kiddy' platform games, traditional Japanese RPG's (Although Diablo and Morrowind appeal to me alot) and arcade racers. PC hardly supplies any of that these days. It's all Starcraft clones, Counter-Strike clones or 'Hey, EA cashed in on the war, lets make another FPS/stratergy/ping-pong set in WWII' type game.

Console for me. I have nothing against PC gaming though. Some of my favorite games are on PC (Last Express, Neverhood, Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, Sonic CD, Quake III and so on). It's just that I don't like where PC gaming has ended up. Clones upon clones upon clones, each more buggy than the last, and each focusing on online play. Plus hey, my PC hardware is rubbish.

I have a 1337 PC if I don't mind saying, and I have always enjoyed messing around with my pc, so I guess I like the configuration and such.  I am also a tad of a graphics whore sometimes, and a PC lets me feel like I have a purpose.

I will say that PC is much better at first person shooters than consoles with regard to controls.  I personally would rather use a keyboard and mouse for a FPS than a controller, no matter the system.  Controllers are so fiddley for a game like that.  Instead of doing everything at the same time you have to stop, hold a button in, scroll through a menu and find whatever.  BUt I don't play much FPS so it doesn't affect me much.  But when I do it frustrates the hell out of me.

Pretty styling manunited.    Do you have a 3DMark03 score to back that up?

There's my latest.  Completely untweaked in any way, and I was actually running SETI@Home while running it, so I am sure I can do better.  I ran it right after installing my video card, and haven't had time for any hardcore tweaks yet.

I hate PC gaming with a passion. Playing with a mouse and keyboard is the absolute worst thing I can imagine having to do, even for FPS.
I am a console gamer 100%, I dont own a single PC game.

heh.  Not too shabby at all.  What are your specs like?  I would imagine that it would be something like a Radeon 9800XT with a Pentium 4 3.2 GHz to pull something like that off.

I am content with my "new" video card, but I am waiting for the Prescott to come out before making my next serious system upgrade.

EDIT:  I REALLY hate doing this.  Ordinarilly when I agree with cubedcanuck, my response is the same as when I usually disagree with him.  I try to ignore him.  But in this case, he deserves at least some recognition for at least knowing what a HORRIBLE gaming platform a PC is.  I will say that there is no better platform to play a graphical adventure, FPS, or RTS on though.  The problem is that there aren't many games in those genres that I really care to play that much.

My opinion is pretty much this: consoles are designed solely to play games, PCs are not.  Therefore as a game lover I'm going to be more in favour of consoles because they're more gamer friendly.  They're cheaper, have controllers designed for gaming (unlike the keyboard and mouse), and I don't have to shell out tons of money just to keep the hardware up to date.  I bought a new computer earlier this year and already it's out of date.  PCs aren't even designed for 3D graphics (since most applications don't need it) so usually you can't even get the best graphics with the card that comes with the machine unless you get it custom made.

Generally I don't care for the mouse/keyboard setup though I do think that a mouse has some usage in gaming.  RTS games or simulations like Sim City all work great with a mouse and if I designed a console I would have a mouse so as to accomodate such games.  As for the keyboard well it's designed for typing so unless you need to communicate with other players keyboards aren't needed for gaming.  Sure they're good for hot keys but I feel that if your game needs hot keys you've made it too complex.  I also feel that, although popular, a mouse/keyboard setup is quite impractical for an FPS.  A 3D game viewed from a first person perspective craves to be played by dual analog sticks.  The only reason the mouse/keyboard setup works so well in PC FPS games is because those games are designed to use those controls.  That doesn't mean those are more intuitive.

I also don't like the online focus of PC games.  What's this?  Ian "Nintendo should go online" Sane is complaining about online gaming?  Well specifically I'm complaining about games that are designed primarily with online play in mind.  In order to get your money's worth out of most PC games you have to play online with a bunch of people who you don't know who school your ass because they have no life and play all day.  What I want are multiplayer games with a decent one player mode that I can play with my friends whether they're at my house or 1000 miles away.  You can't find games like that on the PC since offline multiplayer isn't an option and it's harder to have the same hi-tech computer as your friends as it is to have the same console.

I hate the keyboard/mouse combo as well.  Merry f'in Xmas!!!  I've agreed with cubedcanuck in other instances though.

I, too, don't like using a keyboard and mouse, but I also don't like using a console controller, either, nor the WASD setup. I still love first-person shooters, just not the controls.

I'd much rather play on a console then a PC. MMORPGs are good on PCs, but I still prefer it on a console, it feels more like a "game" that way.
