What games should I get? - SNES
« on: December 07, 2003, 10:52:06 AM »
I'm getting a Super Nintendo soon, because I never had one and want to play some of the games I missed out on. The games I'm planning to get are: Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound. I can already play all of the Super Mario games and Link to the Past on my GBP, so I don't need those. Can anyone recommend some more games for me? Thanks!

There are some delicious 2D fighting games like Super Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat II, TMNT Tournament Fighters, and Killer Instinct. Final Fight 3 is an awesome beat-'em-up if you can find it. There's all those RPGs like Mario RPG, the Final Fantasies, and must-have Secret of Mana. There are tons of good shooters, like Darius Twin and UN Squadron...

Someone may decapitate me when they hear me say this again, but you must get Shadowrun.  Also, Super mario Kart, Castlevanias, Super Contra, Super ghouls and ghosts, Super R-type and about 200 others .  The SNES really has the best selection of great games.

Donkey Kong Country 1&2 are both great games (i don't think 3 was as good as the first two). So is TMNT4: Turtles in Time. Pretty much everything everyone else said too.

*seconds Super Mario Allstars suggestion*

DEFINITELY get Donkey Kong Country for the SNES - it just misses something in the GBA conversion.
That was probably the last great SNES game that I can remember. *yearns*

I remember when I first played Star Fox.  The graphics didn't impress me too much because they look so plain.  What got me hooked to the game was the opening scene when the emergency warning went off.  I've heard speech in games before -- i.e. Street Fighter II -- so I don't know why I was impressed with Star Fox's.  After the "impressive" speech wore off, the gameplay just made me stay with the game.  The memories...

I wish I still have the game.  I traded it to a friend for some Spider-Man comics....

Funny thing.  I was bidding on a SNES and some games on ebay.  turns out I won Star Fox (yay!) but lost the SNES (boo!).  I told the guy I was a 10 year old from Ohio with no clue what he was doing.  True story.

Or better yet, get DKC2. I think most people will second that that's the best one.

True their's not much in the way of texture but I think it was the first truly 3D game on the SNES, besides I like the retro look.
Another one of my favorite games for the SNES was Yoshi's Island, I loved the game but some people didn't like it because it wasn't a true sequel to Super Mario World.

Yeah, get the Donkey Kong Country trilogy. DKC on GBA is craptastic compared to the SNES original. Seems all the really good fighters and RPG's have been mentioned (oh wait, try Illusion of Gia, too). Try Bubsy for a fun, happy happy joy joy platform game. Stay the hell away from Bubsy 2 though.

Super Castlevania, Super Ghoul's and Ghosts, Lost Vikings, TMNT in Time, Plok!, Clay Fighter, Mario and Wario (was this released in the US?), EVO, Smash Tennis, Claymates, Earthworm Jim/2 and.. Erm... Lots more. Check 'em out.

Ok, thanks for all the replies. This is a temporary list I have set up:

Definite
-Chrono Trigger
-Earthbound
-Secret of Mana
-Donkey Kong Country
-Super Metroid
-Final Fantasy 6

Maybe
-Secret of Evermore
-Super Mario RPG (although I should beat  M&L: SS 1st)
-Super Ghouls and Ghosts
-Super Punch-Out
-Kid Icarus (I think this is on SNES...)

For Secret of Evermore, Punch-out, and Kid Icarus, can someone please explain these games to me? I have heard good things about them but don't really know what they are.

Oh and I can already play all of the Super Mario games and Link to the Past on my GBP, so I don't need those.

Thanks

Nah, Kid Icarus was only on NES and Game Boy.
Super Punch-Out was a pretty decent boxing game. You couldn't move around the ring, you just had to time your punches and stuff, and duck swings. The opponents were a crazy bunch, having all sorts of special attacks and crap. The game gets VERY hard. I never played Secret of Evermore myself. It was developed by SquareSoft America, and seemed like a pretty cool RPG. Kinda like Zelda/Terranigma/Secret of Mana in regards to the battle system. It was real time, not turn based.

As for Kid. It was a fun platform game. I don't remember much of it, I hired it out once on NES.

I don't think Secret of Evermore was a fun game at all.  The battle is similar to Secret of Mana, so that's a good thing.  The part I despised was the leveling up of weapons.  You can spend hours leveling up a sword, and just before you know it, you'll find another one to level up.  I didn't like the story behind it that much either.

Star Fox was a technical wonder for it's time for the SNES anyway. Sure the graphics were rather crude, but, what really made the game was the sense of speed and charater/boss designs that came off quite impressively even with the limited ploygon budget. That speed and charater design was sadly traded off in the N64 version in favor of more emenies.

I bought my Snes from my friend a little less than a year ago for $10.  He gave me 8 games games (the good ones being: Mario Allstars, Super Mario World,  DKC 2).  I was very happy. I was gonna look on Ebay, he probably saved me like $100.

So Molobert do you have like a plan to get some of these games?  I mean you usually can't just find Chrono Trigger and Earthbound anywhere.  You either have to pay some big money to get them off Ebay or search thrift stores, flea markets, and garage sales like a mad man to find someone who doesn't know anything about games selling them at a good price.

"I can already play all of the Super Mario games and Link to the Past on my GBP, so I don't need those."

Sure you can... if you like sh!tty annoying voice samples and lowered difficulty.  The GBA versions are always inferior to the originals.  Nintendo always f*cks with them to make them easier or modern or whatever.  They're good if you have no other options but I'd rather play A Link to the Past on the SNES the way it was meant to be played.  Super Mario All-Stars is probably the only port I've seen where Nintendo's changes were an actual improvement.

Here's some of my favourites that I don't think anyone else has mentionned:

Uniracers - I've never met anyone who has played this and doesn't like it.  It's a side scrolling unicycle racing/stunt game.  That may not sound that great in theory but I assure you this is one of the most addictive games ever.

Saturday Night Slam Masters - Street Fighter II and wrestling all in one!  While it's not as detailed as modern wrestling games it's a lot more fun to play and the four player battle royal is insane fun.  Try to get a multitap and some extra controllers for it.

Stunt Race FX - This one generally gets mixed reviews but for the time it's quite an ambitious title.  Essentially it's a polygon racer on the SNES that uses the Super FX chip used in Star Fox.  It's dated by today's standards but is still pretty fun and has some great track designs.  This is more of a game for collectors than a must-own title.  It's also a Miyamoto title.

Kirby Superstar - Best. Kirby. Ever.  This is just an incredibly fun game.  Actually it's really a collection of mini-games but they're all really fun and many of them are some of the best Kirby levels ever.  Last year I managed to find a used copy but the stupid thing crapped out on me after only playing it once and I had to return it.  Absolute must-own title for any platformer fan, even if you hate Kirby.

I haven't played it but I hear that Actraiser is great.  Oh and if you ever see Ogre Battle for sale at a reasonable price get it.  It's like the king of super rare SNES titles.

Heh I asked my friend for his nes and snes and got them both and all the games.  I lost my Snes console and my NEs wouldn't work anymore.  He didn't want them.  I got over 50 nes and 25 snes games.  Sorry, had to say it.
