Viewtiful Joe Teen Rating
« on: December 02, 2003, 12:36:34 PM »
Hello. Looking for any guidance or opinions on buying Viewtiful Joe for a 9 yr old who made it the No. 1 thing on his Christmas list.

I've seen the game on the Demo disk, and am okay with the idea of a third person cartoon punch out (i.e. Super Smash Bros. type of gameplay). I am concerned about other inappropriate content there might be in terms of sexual innuendo or conduct.

Thanks in advance for thoughful responses.

I have played through the demo disc version many times and I am 70% through with the game. There is no sexual conduct whatsoever. The back of the box says it is Rated Teen for "Cartoon Violence" and "Suggestive Themes." Basucally ya, its just the Super Smash Bros Cartoon fighting that we all love The game is the demo is the same kind of stuff you will get in the real game. My little brother is 9 and he loves this game.

According to the Viewtiful Joe web site the game is rated Teen for cartoon violence and suggestive themes.  The "violence" shouldn't be a problem and is no different than what you see in a Bugs Bunny cartoon.  I haven't played that far in the game yet (just got it) but so far the only "suggestive themes" I've seen is that in the intro Joe's girlfriend wants to make out in a movie theatre but it's done in a really goofy way and off camera so it's nothing really that inappropriate.

It's up to you of course but if I had a 9 year old kid I would let them play that game no problem.  I don't really think it deserves a T rating.

The only questionable content is when Silvia wants to make out with Joe at the beginning of the game. That's all I can think about. It's defnitely not worse than a PG or PG-13 movie.

Think about when [you'll find out who] wants to make-out with Silvia at the beginning of one of the unlockable games.

Um...well, Silvia isn't the only dirty thing in the game. If you look close enough (even on the cover of the game I think) they have bilboards for XXX movies or something. The women's breasts are covered with stars but they are still there and still suggesting sex.

like every nintendo game has been given a teen rating. Star Wars gets teen ratings and so did Smash bros. and there is nothing wrong with those games.

Yeah even Metroid Prime got a Teen rating. Mario and Zelda didn't though.

I swear Ninty pays off the ESRB to give Zelda games "E" ratings...The violence in the games beats out VJ and SSB:M, and there are some suggestive themes if you know where to look...

There are the billboards in Adult mode [this mode would, in all probability, be too hard for a 9-year-old anyway]. There are also these dominatrix enemies who wear revealing clothing and make somewhat suggestive sounds, although they're robots, so.... I don't think it's bad at all. The only problem I'd see with this choice is the difficulty of the game.

If you're still interested in one last opinin I've got one.  My son is about to turn 9 and I let him play this game.

There were only two things that I saw as possibly questionable.

1. The opening attempted make out as mentioned above.

2.  When you finish a level, you are rated.  If you rate C it says Crappy.

I know these are minor things but I'm just trying to point out what I thought some parents might be turned off by.  Also, even though it's challenging, my son still loves this game.

How so, Bill? Ocarina merited a T rating with Ganondorf choking out blood and Link stabbing him in the head at the end, but where in Wind Waker? I know about Link jumping up at the end and you know the rest of that, but that is all I can think of.

Though not as suggestive as OoT, there were most definitely some things in Wind Waker that should have made you think...

Suggestive themes. . . you mean like Tingle, I suppose.  But that's far from subtle. Actually, the dancer in WW strikes me as more homosexually inclined than Tingle.

Zelda always seemed to be an E game. . . it'd be weird if it got a Teen rating, even if it did have about the same violent content as it does now.

Well, you caught the obvious ones... ^_^''

But it should really make you wonder how a game like SSB:M can get a T rating, and Zelda get an E rating...

Are there any more than Hostile mentioned? My favorite one in Awakening was when the kid asks where Link and Marin are going. He is suspicous they are together. He's like, "Where are you two going?" For some reason it seemed like an innuendo.

I've looked at Peach's "unmentionables" in SSBM's trophy mode.  HAL did a FINE job...

Thinking about suggestive themes in LA, how about when you go see the bear chef in the Animal village with Marin in tow?...

I forgot about that. I really need to play LA again now. I like how Nintendo hides all this stuff in their alleged "kiddy" games. It's just like how Shrek appears to be only a kids movie, but there are many innuendos.

My favourite part in Link's Awakening is when you first get Marin following you and it says something like "You got Marin!  Is this your big chance?"  I laughed out loud when I read that.  "Heh heh. Oh yeah!!"

The rating system has always been rather inconsistant.  The only reason I can see why SSBM gets a T rating is because Peach is in the game and thus there's "violence against women" in the game.  Almost anything with blood gets an M rating which doesn't really make that much sense since there are plenty of movies with blood in them that get PG-13 ratings.  If Perfect Dark was a movie for instance it probably wouldn't get an R rating.  Manhunt on the other hand would probably get an NC-17 rating.  While the ratings are a good idea it's still hard to tell if a game is suitable for children.  I think they should add another rating between E and T that's sort of an equivalent to PG so something like Smash Bros or Zelda could go in that category because they have some violence but are not worthy of a T rating.

Of all the Cube games I own the only one I wouldn't allow my kids to play (if I had any) is Eternal Darkness.  However I don't own the Resident Evil games which I also don't feel is appropriate for kids.

some movies seem inconsistent to me. the first matrix seemed like a pg-13 movie, but got the r rating. then titanic had that chick hair butt naked, and it was only pg-13....hahahahha so i dont even know what these people think when they rate stuff. viewtiful joe sounds like mr rogers compared to most the stuff kids get now a days.

Well I wonder why Disey Movies got rated G since of those disney movies "urban legends" that are true (the word s_x in the lion king and some body parts that kids shouldnt see in aladin and little mermaid)

maybe its because a movie like the first matrix would trigger some independent thought alarms in children
