I have always been a fan of the mario series and i havae afew questions on the origins of the characters in double dash. Is toadette just a random female citizen of the mushroom kingdom? It says that Bowser junior is Bowsers son , what happneed to the koopa kids in the older mario series? Are baby mario and Baby luigi the offspring of mario and luigi or are they from that one yoshi's island game where mario got turned into a baby? is diddy kong donkey kongs son? and where did waluigi and Daisy come from? ( i think i saw them both in mario tennis for the 64, was that there first game?)

Toadette - made up, though she does look like a denizen of Paper Mario...

Bowser junior has been around for quite a while...But don't give up hope on the Koopa Kids...Let's just say that they aren't quite dead yet...

Baby Mario and Luigi are from Yoshi's Island...Time travel rocks...

Diddy is DK's best friend...

Waluigi first appeared in Mario Tennis (N64)

Daisy is from Super Mario Land (GB)...She is also Luigi's love interest...

Well Baby Bowser was in Super Mario Sunshine, and Mario Kart DD has a strong Super Mario Sunshine theme to it. And also i guess Bowser needed a partner.

And Waluigi is the most pathetic, pointless character ever created, ugh.

Why is there a Bowser Jr when there are already 8 Koopa kids? Seems redundant to me. Bowser Jr pissed me off in SMS because he looks exactly like Baby Bowser so I initially thought he was the same guy and Nintendo (for some really dumb reason) goofed up their own continuity. Of course it makes NO SENSE for Baby Mario and Luigi to exist in the same game as adult Mario & Luigi since they're the same people. I guess they have access to a time machine or something.

Other facts about Mario Kart characters that Nintendo seems to forget about:

Birdo is actually a guy dressed in drag. In Super Mario Bros 2 (his first appearance) he is described as such in the manual. Nintendo has since referred to him as a female but I am immune to revisionist history and remember reality. Birdo is like a dinosaur version of Bridget. Unless he got a sex change in which case he is now female.

Donkey Kong as he appears in DKC onwards is actually Donkey Kong Jr from the old arcade game. Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong. Nintendo pulled a "Baby Mario" in Mario Tennis by having both the current DK and DK Jr coexist so I guess it's the wacky time machine again.

I'm unclear on whether Toad is one guy or is just what citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom are called. In Super Mario Bros 2 I always assumed that Toad was one guy. There is also only one person named "Toad" in Super Mario RPG. However from any Mario game from Super Mario 64 onwards it's implied that "Toad" is what a Mushroom person is called. Did Nintendo goof up or did Square in Mario RPG? I'm also unclear on the multiple Yoshi thing.

Birdo is now female...Has been since Mario RPG...I think we all should know why they changed Birdo's gender...

I've always thought the Toad in the Mario Kart/Party/Tennis games to be the same Toad that has been around since Mario 2, but who knows?

For the most part so have I but there have been several games that suggest otherwise. In Super Mario 64 there are tons of Toads all over the castle. So many that there are times where you can see two on screen at a time. Are these multiple Toads or just one guy reappearing several times with a few goof ups where you can see multiple Toads at the same time? Luigi's Mansion also suggets multiple Toads. Finally in Paper Mario all of the Mushroom people are referred to as Toads and live in Toad Town.

Of course Nintendo is like the master of inconsistencies what with the Mushroom Kingdom looking different in numerous games. It wouldn't surprise me if sometimes Toad is one person and sometimes he's several people. With so many different developers working on various Mario themed games you have to expect some mix ups. Since Mario RPG is my favourite Mario game I'll go with that definition of Toad as one guy who's a friend of Mario and Peach.

I'm sorry but arguing about continuity in Mario games is just stupid.
Miyamoto is all about gameplay and fun and doesn't care about storylines or continuity. He's even been quoted as basically saying as much. Mario and Baby Mario co-exist in MKDD for no other reason than because the developers wanted it that way.

The Birdo argument is weak. Just because it's a quote in the manual doesn't mean a whole lot to me. Those old NES manuals were written when there was a lot more distance between NCL and NOA, and I don't think the people that wrote the manuals necessarily checked everything out with the designers. It's a funny quote, but one that can be explained away rather easily.

I think my brother summed up the Birdo debate pretty well last night while we played Mario Kart.

"Birdo's a guy because it's cool for there to be a cross-dresser in a Mario game."

Okay that doesn't exactly prove that Birdo is a guy but you got to admit that in a kid friendly franchise it's neat to see a controversial character like that. That fact that Nintendo has been "covering it up" for so long makes it a neat bit of trivia. It's fun to tell someone new to the Mario series "you know Birdo is actually a guy".

I agree with Miyamoto's gameplay philosophy but to ignore continuity just makes Nintendo look unprofessional in my opinion. I shouldn't know more about their own characters than they do. It's just sloppy to have major continuity holes.

If you want to go with story, Mario & Luigi, while it makes good use of the Mario Universe, it does a good job of making it seem like nothing in the Mario games are connected. Like it is the first time Mario and a yoshi meet. If you know what I mean. For M&L, it may be the 3rd game in the Mario RPG series, but it doesn't do a good job of making any real connections other that characters and genre.

Birdo's and Toads are species kinda like hobbits and elves.

There is a main Character named toad and there is also a people called Mushroom People

The birdo in SMB2 was an evil CrossDresser....other birdo's may be different..then again Birdo wanted to be Birdette...o is a masculine noise

. Also SMB2 was quite the undertaking by NCL and NOA remember it used to be called Doki Doki Panic in Japan and featured Arab characters when it was brought to America it was made into a mario game. Then it came back to japan as SMB USA...so the birdo thing might have been far more intentional then a guide writers claim to fame.

Yoshi's are the same way

you know what this conversation reminds me of? The smurf discussion in Donnie Darko(excellent film you should see it multiple times). And if the similarities continue then the only way to win is for someone to make an extremely odd comment about the various characters and end with some problem with a characters ability to be fruitful and multiply.

wow thanks for the answers it clears up a lot of questions in my mind. But now its getting to confusing so if no new info surfaces i think we should leave the topic alone. BUt of course i get the last word when i say that toad is the same toad that was in mario bros 3. thanks for the spoiler info for M&L im still gonna get it and i am happy about that news.
