iQue
« on: November 25, 2003, 10:16:47 AM »
I have a feeling I'll get reemed for not putting this in the "Other Systems" category, but it seems like the only people who would be interested in it are the ones in here. So the iQue came out last week in China, and they've got video's and pics of it at www.the-MagicBox.com.

Looks kinda interesting and fun, but I'm predicting it flops. The demand for it just doesn't seem that high right now, but maybe the culture in China will eat it up. It will also probably be totaly forgoten in 3 years when Sony or M$ release a similar product, and loose millions making it profitable. People will rant on for years about how Nintendo never tries anything new and refuses to get on the downloadable software bandwagon.

The sadder thing is, despite having played all these games before, if they ported it over here to the states I'd pick it up in a second, and probably I'd claim it was the most amazing thing ever made.

I dont like how the controler looks, I dont know why mabye its just me.  But it seems like a cool idea if everthing is cheap enough, because these are last generation games.  The chinese play PC games and they do import Gamecube, Ps2, and Xbox; so they know what a last generation game looks like.

The controller looks bulky.  I dont like the design at all, although if it came to the states I would buy it.

It looks like a cross between the N64 controller and the Dreamcast controller... It doesn't look too bulky, assuming the back is concave.

Looks like it has a really nice selection of games.

Certainly not, that's what this category is here for, whether it's Nintendo brand or not. In fact the category description was just recently changed to better explain this.

EDIT: Wait, I'm confused, this IS the Other Systems category?

It's interesting how the iQue pretty much came out of the blue. There were no announcements or anything until a few weeks ago. Which Division of Nintendo worked on it, I wonder?

the system was announced several months ago.

Even still, low-key GBC games were usually announced more than a few months before their release...

By the way, macintosh is a brand not a company.  The name is Apple...

unfortunately, i doubt it will take three years for it to be forgotten. sony is going to release the ps2 in china, and i have a hard time believeing that it wont have an impact on the sales of the ique. i'm not sure about microsoft, but i think they are planning on releasing the xbox in china as well. anyone know for sure?

Releasing the PS2 in China would probably impact PS2 software sales a lot more than iQue sales.

Not sure about you folks, but iQue has and always been targeted for the China market. Believe it's equivalent elsewhere in the world would be the N64. Also believe that they are the first among console gaming companys' foray into the Chinese market. You can try importing it but well... it's all in Chinese but if you understand kanji in Japanese versions, you should be able to understand about 30% of the words.

All the gaming powers are rather eager to tap into the Chinese market because of the potential there (and of course, the high population as well. It's always believed that if all the Chinese spit at the same time, they'll drown the world ). Besides, there's currently little or no console gaming presence there. Microsoft has working on that a few years ago (with the Asian version of games) and Sony only recently realised China's potential as well and they started making versions of the PS2 to cater to them.

So I think Nintendo is actually ahead of the race there by launching the iQue before the others. I think it's just to gain a foothold there first.

I don't think you would want to import it, becuse from what i understand you don't buy games for it they are downloaded from things at stores.  So if you do import it you'd be stuck without games.

Sony is going to launch the PS2 in China shortly with extremely low priced games, thus following Nintendo's lead as usual.

But I think the iQue is about the perfect console to start out in China with.  It remains to be seen how well it will work in the environment, but I think it's the greatest thing to give to a piracy infested environment such as China.

And we all know who'll get the kudos for it, don't we?

The PS2 itself has a pretty high price tag, though, something like $250 I think.

TextNintendo spent quite a bit of time and money to come up with the iQue and rumors say that the iQue has been designed by Scott Summit, who also designed for Apple and the Zodiac Handheld device. The iQue is a NTSC output device (while China is official PAL). This all really smells like the iQue is eventually getting released outside of China too. Chinese media already picked up the rumors and for them it's a given fact that they are just the first country to play with Nintendo's new toy.

So its not a direct Apple employee just a Apple designer, and sorry for posting this late, i just went on the forums now
