New 2D Mario! Great news!

GameCube Land has the news, so use the link. It says that it will be 3D graphics, with side-scrolling gameplay. I wonder what else Nintendo has up its sleeve. Anyway, this is fantastic news. Nintendo should give 2D a bigger push than they have recently.

I think the new 2D Mario game thats in development is Super Mario Advance 5, while Mario 128 on GameCube could be anything.

I don't really buy it.  This has been a rumour for a while and it seems unlikely that some site I've never heard of has the exclusive scoop.

I also don't get why people cream their pants over a 2D Mario game with polygons.  I don't WANT a crappy 2.5D Mario game.  If they're going to go with a 2D route then go with it full out with sprites.  Sprites is part of what 2D fans like about that style of game.

I think cel-shading would be the best route to go. That way it could have the appearance of a classic Mario side-scroller but allow all kinds of neat effects not possible in a sprite-based game.

TBH i think its true but it wont be Mario 128...it will be a whole new mario...Paper Mario 2 or something...cause...Miyamoto said in many interviews that Mario 128 is a sequal to Mario 64 with no gimmicks .

"Miyamoto said in many interviews that Mario 128 is a sequal to Mario 64 with no gimmicks."

Miyamoto made it clear that his problem with SMS was it was so similar to SM64 with the only exceptions being the minor changes (the gimmicks) and that Mario 128 would be a "true" sequel in the sense that it would be very different. For some reason, a lot of people have interpreted his comment as suggesting the game will be similar to SM64 when he clearly meant the exact opposite. He meant that unlike SMS which only slightly strayed from the SM64 formula with gimmicks like the water pack, SM128 would have some REAL changes which backs up the idea of it being some kind of next-generation side-scroller.

i agree.  cel-shading all the way.

and mario should be a super hero, not a plumber.  and he should have the ability to slow down and speed up time.  and buy upgrades.  and punch, kick, pull bombs out of his back pocket, and throw boomerangs.  and he should wear a pink cape.

I totally agree with Ian.  If the next Mario game was 2D it would be best with only sprites.  Old school is where its at.  2D games are so awesome to play on the GBA, so why can't there be a super high quality 2D sprite game for the GC?

I disagree.

How do you know he may not take out these "gimmicks" and stick to the tried and true SM64 formula?

How can he say one thing but then mean another?  If something is a "true sequel" that it would follow the same formula, not differ greatly.  If you can support this seemingly unfounded assumption, I'd love to see it.

Miyamoto may end up proving you right and me wrong, but, until then, you have to be open to other's interpretations.

I remember reading IGN's site for games coming out and AC2 and Paper Mario 2 were on the list so its probably Paper mario. It could be a new 2D side scroller because the most successful game and one of the most highly praised(SSBM, and Viewtiful Joe) are in 2D.

I would rather have a new 3D mario set in the mushroom kingdom though(and more of the levels without the water pack[the ones where shadow steals it and its all platforming skills]  because those were the best)

that would be cool to play in 2D or 3D, Imagine all the neat stuff they could do with a forest of illusion level

I would like to see the return of the battleships and beating the Koopa kids in a new Mario Game

If the next Mario game is 3D (which I think it will be) I want it to return to the original platformer design of having several levels (like 50 or so) with one goal each: beat the level.  Ever since Super Mario 64 every platformer only has like ten levels and the goal is to collect a bunch of stupid crap.  Back in the glory days of Mario platformers like Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, and Yoshi's Island each level only required you to get from one end to the other and everything had a more action based approach.  Sometimes you had levels that had a secret exit (that usually would unlock secret levels) or you would have a boss battle.

This type of design would not be that hard to do in 3D.  It's been done in those Super Mario Sunshine levels without the waterpack as well as the Bowser levels in Super Mario 64.  Parts of levels like the big ice slide in Super Mario 64 could also be levels on their own.  Make more smaller levels and save the huge open areas for the overworld hub.  Search-and-find gameplay can be used to find levels in the overworld instead of finding useless crap.  Throw in some huge dungeons for the bosses and you have a platformer that combines the best qualities of 2D and 3D platformers.

I do remember an interview where Miyamoto was saying that when Mario was 2D it was much easier for anyone to pick it up and play. I agree with you Ian, there should be multiple levels as opposed to a few big levels, regardless of whether the next Mario is 2D. And didn't Symphony of the Night use sprites? I was hoping Konami would make an ultra-beautiful 2D next-gen Castlevania, but they didn't. I wonder how today's gamers would embrace sprites. It's a good idea to use sprites for the next Mario.

I don't really care if the next Mario is 2D or 3D, free roam or sidescrolling- as long as Nintendo keeps it to the platforming basics without throwing in some weird gimmicks, I'll be happy as pie.
