Ok, someone is bugging me by telling me that the GCN is no longer in 2nd place worldwide, and Xbox has taken that title. I think the person just is confusing the US with the worldwide figures...

Anyway, is the GCN still 2nd worldwide, and if so does anyone have a link that states so?

Look, right now they're about equal, and that's all that really matters. Different promotions and big games shift the two constantly. Right now with the GC price drop, I'd guess that Nintendo's in the lead since sales have jumped worldwide, and Nintendo was claiming second place back at E3 as well.

Just to play devil's advocate, how about you link us to the retail numbers and prove yourself right?

As far as I know, the Gamecube is 5th.

All I can tell you is that the retail chain I work for sells 3 times as many GC's as it does X-Box systems. And ever since the $99 price drop took effect, we have been seeling even more. Even our Ps2 sales have taken a dive. A serious dive. we have not sold a ps2 in almost a month.

Let me just say this, the company I work for is not the place one would usually buy a game system, where more of a "music and more" chain. It makes me wonder how places like EB and TRU are doing with their GC sales. Several of the TRU's near my home were sold out of GC's for about a week after the price drop.

However, I'll look for whatever numbers I can find, why don't you do the same BW?

Its number one in my household! And even though some of our friends won't admit it, they can't argue with the fact that they play more GameCube than anything else.

tis true, Nintendo will always be number #1 one way or another

But yeah, GC is 2nd worldwide. and yet that may not matter as the gap in the U.S. is closing and GC could overtake X-box by Christmas.

It will be intresting how much M$ will be losing total by the end of xbox's life cycle? let alone Xbox next

i say gamecube is slightly ahead ( SLIGHTLY as in a few hundred thousand ) and with mario kart coming...i wont even go there.

At the end of the day, sales figures don't really matter. I used to think they did, but at the end of the day, as long as you're having fun with your console, who cares whether the Xbox or the GameCube is second? No-one knows the answer for sure anyway, and the difference is so small that it's unimportant.

Either way, the GameCube is still a great console.

According to the BBC, these are the currect and most up-to-date world wide console sale figures

PlayStation 2 - 51,200,000
GameCube - 9,550,000
XBOX - 9,400,000

I checked out those numbers. They're from July, unfortunately. Not quite what I'd consider up to date, but a good sign nonetheless.

I'd say we have to consider the accuracy of any such survey. I'd guess the error margin is somewhere at ~250k.

maybe its just me, but second place doesnt look any better then third. a couple hundred thousand units between second & third seems pretty miniscule and unimportant when you are both trailing the leader by 40 million.
