SSX3 on Gamecube?
« on: October 21, 2003, 06:35:32 PM »
Hmm..   all the store around here, didnt get SSX3 today for GC.   But recieved their PS2 & XBox shipments of the game.
What the hell is EA doing??

Anyway the guy at EB let me change my pre-order and I got the PS2 version, though cause of a rather big mix-up that I wont go into here..  I can come back and exchange it for the GC version when it comes in.  Of course if I want to do that...

But I want to be sure the GC has all the same features as the PS2, otherwise its not worth trading in.
My big things would be..

-Retains all the moves, but I dont know how they would do it without the 4 shoulder buttons.
-Dolby Pro Logic II & THX Certification
-16:9 / Anamorphic Widescreen Video Options
-Better Graphics / Better Framerate (not a huge thing on the list, but nice to have)

Actually, a number of reviews for the GC mention that the lack of shoulder buttons, combined with the GC's 'slushy' shoulder buttons drag the controls down a tad.

I assume Dolby support would be included, I can't see why not. As for the graphics, all three systems are about the same.

IGN says the GCN game is missing a move because the GCN controller lacks as many buttons as other systems

Bah.  I have played a great deal of SSX Tricky on both PS2 and GCN.  My roommate owns the game for PS2, and I have rented SSX Tricky enough for GameCube to know what it's like.

I find the controls MUCH better on GameCube.  Trying to press the L1 or L2 buttons while steering cramps my hand every time, and the controls for setting up spins or flips are just god-awful on the PSX.  The stick/d-pad layout are all wrong.  I very much prefer the GCN for SSX.

PS:  I have a PSX controller hooked up to my PC, and I have played a lot of THPS on PSX.  It's not like I don't know the controller.  I am just trying to say that it doesn't work well for SSX, in spite of what you might have been told.

Also, i think its online for PS2, so maybe you'll want to keep that version.

yeah..  I have SSX Tricky on GC.  and kinda prefer the controller over the PS2 DS.   But lossing moves = kinda crappy
The thing that is pissing me off about the PS2 version right now is a few corses, manly the city level have some massive framerate problems..  to the point where the controls feel off or sluggish.   I dunno if this is true of the GC or XBox versions, but would exchange the game if performance is better on GC.

I want to know who the genius is at EA who decided that reset would be the Y button. Couldn't they just use that button as the fourth grab and put the reset option in the pause menu? That's the reason I disliked Tricky on the Cube and probably the reason I won't pick up SSX3.

To answer your question about getting it on the 21st, let me tell you it was a hassle.  I called all 15 of the stores in my area that I usually look at games from and they all said they would be getting it in on the 21st.  When I called yesterday none of them had it, EB even told me they got an email saying it was pushed back to the 23rd.  Fortunately we were out and I checked FYE of all places.  Needless to say I have been playing SSX3 for the GC since yesterday and its AMAZING!!!

PS:  I agree w/ everyone, reviews can say what they want, but I think the GC controller works great w/ the SSX series

Slightly unrelated, and maybe horrible self promotion but SSX3 Gamecube is awesome. It's the version I own, and I played all the different version of it for about 3 months.  I hope you guys enjoy it.

Oddly enough...  No I didn't make the call on that one, I too spent most of the first while reseting myself when the game was in its early stages. Now that I'm used to it though, it all works well.  The only sad thing is that I'm so busy with NFS:U I don't have the time to play much SSX at all.

If a feature is rarely used, like reset, it should be bound to the Z-Button. After all, that's what it's for!

Yah, should be the Z button, would never be able to press it accidently, hardly able to hit it when I want too, LOL.

For the most part though, the control scheme works awesome, no real complaints, and I have had a lot fewer resets then when I first started, but still when it happens every once and awhile, pure frustration.
