I think there is merit to loving the old classic games, that it's not just nostalgia. Back then the only graphics to speak of were a few cleverly designed pixels- graphics were designed to be functional, not artistic. Which meant that in order to catch the players attention the gameplay HAD to be good. Sure, there were some crappy games back then, but overall I think the track record was better than it is now. Today, since graphics are so advanced, people are looking to it and praising it rather than the gameplay, as we all know. I enjoy great graphics as much as the next guy, but a bad game with good graphics is still a bad game. In the 8-bit days, if the gameplay wasn't good, nobody played it. These kids are so loaded up on how good the graphics should be and having features out the wazoo that they can't recognize these games for what they are- pure, unadulterated fun (except for E.T.).

m_c: I think the ratio wasn't better, there were just fewer games and you probably forgot almost all of the bad ones. I mean, how many arcade games from back then are still known today? Maybe 20? Compared to how many years? Nowadays gamers get angry when there are no good games in 3 months...

I dont understand why this bothers people here so much?
Who gives a crap what these kids like?
My Dad use to play road hockey with a piece of frozen horse crap, am I suppose like frozen horse crap because its a classic form of a puck?

Like what you like, and stop caring about what others like and you will be much happier.

I also find it very ironic when I see posts like this "That sums up my view. This generation expects the violence and gun games. They're 9 to 12 for crying out loud!!!!!"

and then go on to say "Putting the fact I want to bash the living daylights out of them aside,"

do you see the irony yet?

No.  Because the kids opinions appears to be serious, while the other is overstated for the humor of it.  I'm quite sure we aren't going to kick them and beat them for real, and i'm also fairly sure if there were boobs and guns in those games, they'd give them a lot more time.

One point you made earlier, Cubedcanuck, does have merit.  And thats when you're young you don't like anything that , say, your parents liked.  My mother loved the Rolling Stones.  I hated them.  Made fun of them.  When i got older, i started to give them a chance, and now, while not the biggest fan, i occasionally will listen to them.   I see that i just railed against them because they were old and my music was the best.   So lets hope these kids are just being kids and they'll grow up and become interested in the history of games, not just the whats 'cool' games.

I like this quote:

"But you can get this game on a cell phone. Why would you want to pay for it in an arcade?"

What a moron.  Why would I want to play it in the arcade?  Maybe because back in the late 70s a cell phone that could play Space Invaders would probably cost like a million bucks and would be the size of a microwave with a rotary dial and no service anywhere anytime and would have a battery life of maybe ten seconds.

I like how they all recognized the hammer as being in Smash Bros.

I don't really think the future is doomed because of these kids because when I was a pre-teen I, and all of my friends, were the same way.  Hell we thought Super Mario Bros 3 was an old game because it was an NES game and the SNES was the way to go.  Back then I generally didn't like classic games, classic movies, or classic music.  That sort of thing is very normal for a kid that age.  Then I grew up and now that I'm older and more mature I've come to appreciate entertainment from before my age.  Some of these kids will likely be the same way.

Thats kind of what i was aiming at, though you expressed it better.

The main thing that annoys me are the dumb, think they're being witty, comments.  I was playing SNES along with my old NES and Coleco vision because i liked the games.  I dont see these kids playing PS1 when they have the PS3.

My first mario game was actually Super Mario Land on my sister's GB back in 1992 (I cried when she got it, cause i didn't get one). Sure, controlling him was like running on ice with waxed soles, but i liked it. My uncle made up for it by getting me Super MArio Land 2, which is the beter game. I could finally see Mario!
There were no colors or anything. And then i went to my uncle's house, and he had this thing called an NES with Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt. And so my love began......

My uncle got married, yadda yadda, and he now has a 3 year old son (who looks exactly like me when I was that age, for some reason) and him and my other young cousins gather round the pirated PSX (they still have it) and play pirated Croc and pirated Muppet games.
My OTHER cousins, however, have ditched their PSX, and try to come over to my house to play Mario 64 or Mario Kart 64 (cause they love being the princess).
Hehehe, so it's not all bad.

Erm.. eh?  What's the problem?  I didn't really see anything shocking in those comments.  They didn't seem to hate Mario, and that's the only one in that list I can truly respect.  Come on, Pong?  The only reason that game's famous is because it was among the first.  Tetris?  Yeah, it's fun sometimes, but it's an acquired taste, and gets boring (I agree with the comment that basically said it needs variety).  Space Invaders?  Never played it.  E.T.?  No comment.

As a reference point, I'm 17 (it does seem odd to think of SMB as "my mom and dad's days")

If you have never played Space Invaders, then you no right to support them

Maybe we are more nostalgic than others, but I appreciate the classic games like Pong and Tetris.  I don't just like them because the games are the firsts, but because they are fun...The comment on variety was obviously made by someone with little game experience, because otherwise they would realize that games weren't as complicated as they are now...

I think the only reason why mindless shooters and brawlers were popular was because of the lack of button combinations.
Try playing Splinter Cell or Metal Gear Solid on the NES controller.......or that joystick - that only has ONE button.

Who gives a crap what these kids like?
It's not that I care about what others like, its that the gaming industry as a whole looks to be continuing the trend of graphics over gameplay. And its because of these opinions that this will continue.
Why would game companies care about the opinions of kids? Because it will be this group that are teenagers around 2006. Does this year ring a bell? Its the next stage of the Console Wars, that's what. And these companies would be crazy to ignore them, because they will be influencing family decisions about whether to buy the N5, the PS3 or Xbox2. The parents are likely to choose whichever one is favoured by the child, because apparently they are the know-alls when it comes to this kind of thing.
Does it sound crazy? Think about it.

And irony? Don't put words into my mouth. I have a little brother that fits right into the age group that the article covers, and it just echoed what I have heard. Luckily he is happy with a GC and the games I have bought, and reads the same magazines that I buy.
As for my urge to beat some sense into these kids, it has nothing to do with violent games. I didn't get up an M-15+ game until Goldeneye came out (I think I was 14 but my parents DO take an interest in what I play), and I cannot understand why it has changed so greatly, that while the games are becoming more realistic, they get into the hands and systems of these children.

And that's why I care. Happy?

Acquired? Perhaps, but it hooked me way before Mario did, and despite all the sequels, I still have that original GB game (and classic GB, complete with sticky tape keeping the batteries in place). But Pong, Space Invaders and Donkey Kong are all games that will either hook you or won't at all. It was the nature of games early on - not as easy to pick up and play for short periods. Less convenient perhaps, but putting in the time was very rewarding, especially when it gets hard! And by hard, I mean insane!

Hm, okay, to be fair here are my oppinions on the games:

Pong: Well, uh... This will only get you if you have the first contact syndrome (i.e. never seen something of its kind before). I had it as a kid, but I don't think it kept me that interested. The most interesting part was when you moved the game mode switch in between two modes, it would give one player three and the other player two paddles.
Donkey Kong: I didn't play the arcade (more precisely C64) version that much, the difficulty was quite high and the levels somewhat confusing. I was still very small back then, though. I consider the SGB "remake" the best game ever.
Handheld Football: I have never even seen this before. Maybe it wasn't even released in Europe?
Tetris: My first GB game. I always wondered why everybody around me kept playing it like it was the best thing on earth. But that doesn't mean much, I feel the same way about GTA.
SMB: Well, I played only the Allstars version, but I believe they were pretty much identical. The game was nice, but too hard for a little kid towards the end. I lost my Allstars cartridge so I can't say what I think about it nowadays.
ET: I never played it. Maybe it's better that way.
Space Invaders: Maybe Gradius and R-Type spoiled me, but I didn't find this interesting. I'm not the kind of person who likes pure hiscore hunts.

By the way, my favourite block-dropping game is Puyo-Puyo.

"Tetris? Yeah, it's fun sometimes, but it's an acquired taste, and gets boring"

I originally thought Tetris was pretty dumb.  Until some finally told me, like ten years after the Gameboy version was released, that the point of the game was to completely fill horizontal lines.  No one had ever told me that so I never knew what I was doing.  Now it's one of my favourite pick-up-and-play games.  Those kids in the article clearly had no idea what they were doing (they thought it had to do with colours) so of course they thought it was boring.  Had someone told them how to play they probably would have gotten into it.

Funny how they all thought there should be bombs since bombs are featured in Tetris 2 which is the less popular game.

That's a hilarious story Anyhoo, these kids suck.  Whap em a few, I say.  Mario's cool, Space Invaders is fun, and Tetris is okay, too.  Pong is decent.  Dunno about ET.  Yeah, I'm going to go play Kirby.

Fair enough.  But I've played numerous clones of it, and I've found them fairly entertaining (I still prefer Asteroids and Battlezone though).  Also, I'm a big fan of Donkey Kong.

Also, I think Tetris needs variety, period.  Even for its time, Tetris was a simple game.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't those brilliant games like Super Mario Brothers and Zelda from that same time period?  Tetris has little strategy - you cannot string together combinations like in most other puzzle games like Tetris Attack.  The most you can do is eliminate four rows at once.  Personally, I find that stringing together an amazing six-part combination that clears have the screen much more satisfying than eliminating lines one by one at a blazing speed.

You do realise you get a higher score for getting more lines, right?

Did you ever give 2-player Tetris a chance? That was really fun.
You have 25 lines to clear, and the highest score at the end wins.

Tetris isn't just line by line- it challenges your decision making skills and forces you to work with what you have in a very short ampount of time. When you get in the higher levels it gets extremely difficult. After years I've practice, the most lines I've gotten on the original GB Tetris is something like 170.
