8-bit(post-85) : Sega Master System
16-bit : Sega Genesis
32/64-bit : Nintendo 64

COMPUTERS:
8-bit : Commodore=64
16-bit : Commodore Amiga

8 bit pre85- not sure, only owned 1 pre 85 system.
8 bit post85- Gameboy Color
16 bit: SNES (genesis only outperforms SNES in processor speed)
32/64- N64 (3d) Saturn (2d)

Computers: any computer with small modifications can outperform others and vice versa

Intel 4086 PC?!?!?  Fat chance!  Those old 8-bit PCs had lousy sound (beep/beep) and terrible graphics (4 colors).  Other computers like the Atari 800XL and Commodore=64 easily smashed the 8-bit IBM PCs.

486 PCs had the same flaws.  Although they were improving, they were over-shadowed by stronger machines like the Atari ST and Commodore Amiga which were capable of multi-processing, stereo sound, and thousands of colors.  At best a 486 could go beep/beep and produce 512 colors.

Also, what are you picks for best consoles?

Side-note: Historically the most advanced console is NOT the winner of the console war. Atari 2600, NES, S-NES, PS1, PS2 all won their respective generation... but they were not the most technically advanced system.

Consoles
8bit: NES
16bit: Turbo Duo (I'm a NEC whore)
32bit: Xbox (I would say gekko, but the PPC architecture borders on 64 bit with the extra extensions it uses.

Fun fact for today, what kind of RAM did the n64 use?

RAMBUS manunited.

8 bit - NES (never played any others though)
16 bit - SNES (it just did miracles for what it had.)
32 bit - Xbox (I say this VERY grudgingly though, for the same reason as manunited.)
64 bit - GCN (It's gotta go somewhere.)

Bah, categorizing generations by bits is pointless.  Why don't you just use years?  Personally, I wouldn't know, as generally I have only tried one console per generation.

Agreed.  Somehow I just haven't found a use for being able to count higher than 4,294,967,296 (32 bit)

These things are pretty much factual so I think it's funny that so many people are throwing in their two cents.  Although I do think it's tricky because what do you do with those random machines that came out between the popular ones and few people know about?  Was the Turbo Grafix 16 competing with the SNES?  It was gone pretty much by that time really.

I will point out that the SNES was definitely technically superior to the Genesis.  The SNES could display far more colors than the Genesis, introduced Mode 7 effects, and had a far better sound processor.

Oh yeah, and I guess this is basically a poll anyways, so here come the big keys to lock it up.
