Nintendo has bought 128 million shares (2.8%) of Bandai, and is planning to purchase them. Dayum! They just crossed the Wonderswan and Digimon off their enemy list, they now have many franchises at thier disposal, Naruto, Gundam, Digimon, and tons more of that anime crap. This is big news!

EDIT: Actually maybe its just 2.6% of Bandai that they own now.

Bandai make DigDug and the popular DBZ Budokai (among other DBZ games), basically if its an anime game licence, Bandai have it.

Well you do know that Ninty has that LE Red Gundam GC in Japan, don't you? I'm not surprised at this at all. Maybe they will bring Naruto over here

Just to clear some things up, bandai didn't make budokai, but they did make a bunch of the older dbz games....and they did make (or at least publish) the .hack series which i am really enjoying over on the ps2.

Gamefront.de says both Nintendo and Bandai says it's not true, atleast when I translate the article with systranbox.com, I might have screwed up the translation though.

Well, it dosen't take that long.

But could Nintendo in all honesty afford Bandai? I mean, it's not like they are a small company, they own tons of stuff, their last PS2 game already broke 500,000. Even if they could afford, would Nintendo be willing to pay hundres of millions, maybe even a billion $ or more for them?

The thing is they don't have to buy them Just purchase a big enough chunck. But personally I don't think they will do it. Because Bandai isn't only a game company they have a rather big and healthy anime publishing division. So unless Bandai is unloading their game division for some strange reason, it isn't Nintendo style to buy outright or get a company that does some thing more than games.

.... Though then again they now have the Pokemon company that does more than games so that could be changing.

Nintendo only own 30% of Pokemon company. Nintendo owns the licenses though, but they just let Pokemon publish them and PR things. Maybe they o the same to Bandai, buys 20-30% to get to be the boss and get the exclusives.

And I did some research, and bandai share costs 2850 yen, and 100% of Bandai would cost little less than 1.3billion. So Nintendo could afford them, but they probably will buy just little bit, if any. Reuters writes about this too, and they are pretty reliable.

The chance of Nintendo completely buying out Bandai is so slim it's not funny. Ninty doesn't want Bandai's anime, they want their games...I think it's very likely we could get the .hack games, and I like that possibility

I read the Reuters article, and it says Nintendo has no intentions to acquire Bandai, they just bought those stocks because shareholders approached them. So might be Nintendo won't be buying any more shares. Though Bandai did say in that article that Nintendo was likely to be one of the top 10 shareholders of the comapny. Wonder is 2.6% really enough to be one of the biggest shareholders in such a huge company...

That's the thing. Since the company is so big, there are very few people that could own such a large amount of shares...

Though Ninty only has 2.6%, that 2.6% is made up of 128 million shares...Yeah, that is a LOT

I bet nintendo buys about 15 percent like Sony did with Square in order to secure a good amount of exclusivity and will boost sales big time in Japan

they will just buy that 2+% if they buy any, that way they can earn money from Bandai's success and ofcourse have access to bandai licenses. I'm not surprised because anime is really growing in the US, and Nintendo might be planning for this lucretive future.

All I can say is, can you imagine if a Ninty development team got their hands on a great anime license? For once we'd have a good game about one of the animes we all enjoy. I think that would rock.
