This is why PC Gamers Bother me.
« on: September 25, 2003, 02:32:49 PM »
I play games on all consoles, and all platforms.  I like to think that I am fairly experienced and knowledgable about most platforms, and their games and the upcoming news regarding all systems.  I have a gaming quality PC that I like to play online games with now and then.  I have a GameCube that satisfies my need for REAL gaming, and those are my outlets right there.  I have a GBA as well, and access to a PS2 but I don't play them nearly as much.  I am familiar with the Xbox and its games.

So here's the scenario.  I was playing America's Army online, and everything was going grand.  I was dead, waiting for the match to end so I could respawn, and was just chit chatting in the meantime.  I mentioned that I was leaving after the current game so I could go play some Soul Calibur II.

Of course, being PC Gamers, nobody there knew what the hell Soul Calibur II was.  I was explaining what the game was and what was so good about it, when one little bastard piped up and said "You have an Xbox right?", like it was the most logical thing in the world to own.  Knowing that a PC Gamer wouldn't know the first thing about console games, I was being as patient as I could, even in the face of this statement.

My response was "God no.".  He went on to ask me why, and I told him that "To be perfectly honest, there wasn't a single Xbox game that I wanted."  He asked me what console I had, and I told him I had a GameCube.  His response to that was "GameCube suxxs!" (exact spelling).  He went on to say that DOA3 was the best fighting game ever.  Having played some DOA3 in my day, I responded by telling him that DOA3 was highly overrated, and largely consisted of a graphical update to DOA2.

I went on to say that Soul Calibur II was picking up its share of 10s in gaming reviews, and he disagreed with me.  He said that no game ever scored a perfect 10, and the highest ranking was Splinter Cell with 9.6.  At that point, we had already respawned.  I resisted the urge to shoot him, made my best lemming impression, and left the server.

This is why PC Gamers bother the hell out of me.  For all that gamers are supposed to be early adopters, PC Gamers can't seem to get their mind around the fact that there are more than 2 or possibly 3 genres of games, and they can't seem to figure out that the PC's architecture isn't indicative of the ultimate gaming machine.  That just BOTHERS me.

I was thinking of posting this in the Nintendo Cult thread, but I don't think that this is really indicative of my being a Nintendo fan.  I was in the position of one, but this is just something that generally bothers me because it resists common sense.  I see this in a HELL OF A LOT of PC Gamers, and I just don't see how it's possible.  I watched PC Gaming get flushed down the toilet years ago, and these people seemed to not have even noticed.

My apologies to PC Gamers here.  I have said that I play my share of PC Games as well, and I wouldn't have a PC this powerful if it wasn't worth it to me to play them.  It's just that the hardcore PC Gamers for the most part are frickin idiots, and seem to share a large part of the fanbase of the Xbox, who I also consider to be frickin idiots.  Strangely, I seem to get along with a lot of the PS2 fans I meet.  They seem to have a lot more common sense than to try to say to me that Splinter Cell was the highest reviewed game ever, or that the Xbox was somehow the obvious best console or some horse crap like that.

Grrrr.... I had a big reply for you, but I pressed some button on my keyboard and ipoof! it was gone. Basically, you were playing a free online PC first-person shooter about the army- of course you're going to encounter a lot of @$$holes. I see what you mean- PC gamers are more inclined to go with an XBox, but the ones you talked to didn't even know about Soul Calibur 2, a big game even for the XBox, so it's not like their opinion even matters. I personally know a lot of great PC gamers (most own Gamecubes themselves), and I am a PC gamer myself, although I'm more inclined to go with consoles as of late (especially due to the fact my computer can't run anything more advanced than Freecell), so we're not all like that, and you really shouldn't make blanket statements like most hardcore PC gamers are idiots, because you obviously don't know even a fraction of all the hardcore PC gamers. And people who enjoy their XBox also aren't idiots. An idiot is defined by their attitude, not their preferences. There ARE really stupid Xbox fans out there, but here are a lot of stupid Gamecube fans, too. And on the other side of things, there's also a lot of really good XBox fans who honestly prefer their XBox, as there are a lot of really good Gamecube fans who honestly prefer their Gamecube. You can't categorize something simply by their posessions.

You think that's bad?  You should play some Counter-strike?

You do make some very valid points.  Have you noticed the very same people who love playing PC games go ga-ga over games like Fable and Halo?  Yeah Halo is alright, and Fable could be good, but come on, they are not the best in the world.  PC gamers love their MMORPGs and FPSs more than anything.  Why?  Because they are dorky, pasty-white pre-teen Americans that live out their fantasy life in Everquest or quench blood-thristy desires in Counter-strike(ok, maybe not that severe ).  But anyways, it's also not just PC gamers, but a majority of gamers, especially those from the Playstation era.  They are the ones that play sports games(Ok, don't get me started on sports games.  What the hell!?  If you want to play a sport, how about playing it IN REAL LIFE.  My god, unless you are disabled you should be getting outside for the real thing)  Back on topic, sports, as well as the most realistic games possible.  Why?  I don't know.  When I play games, I play to leave reality, not be brought into a pseudo-real facade...Face it, as more casual gamers are brought into the videogame industry(PC and console) the worse it gets.  Until we get another crash and the "fad" disappears we will just have to face morons who have absolutely no idea what they are talking about

I had a half bottle of sake, and a half bottle of vodka since my last post while in the process of finishing Soul Calibur II.  I must say that the game is by FAR the greatest fighting game I have ever played.  After a while, it seriously felt that the controller no longer existed.  Taki on the screen was acting out my very intention before I had even finished the thought.  The controller no longer exists.  The character on the screen no longer represents a character that Namco created, but the Kunoichi that is me.  The moves that she did were the perfect result of the intent that I had in mind.  Taki is extremely fast, and usually there is little advance warning of the move that she is about to do.  If I was at all a person trained in martial arts, I would strive to fight like she does.  Words cannot describe how much I love the game right now.

Mouse Clicker, SUPER, please, bear with me for a bit.  Even when sober, I tend to look at PC Gamers in such a way.  I visit futuremark.com now and then, and I look at the forums there.  I don't hate PC Gamers, and I really do believe that some of them are more informed than the person that I was talking to, but I really DO believe that there are all too many PC Gamers that think in a similar way.  Mouse Clicker, SUPER, I know that you guys know the value of consoles, but the point that I was trying to make was that there are FAR too many PC gamers who think like the guy I mentioned in my post above.

Bill, I don't play Counterstrike for that very reason.  I LOATHE Counterstrike.  IMO, it's the biggest collection of lamers on the planet.

Mouse Clicker, I actually just remembered the single Xbox fan I did like.  His name was Radius.  He supported Xbox and actually fought the very good fight.  I don't see a single reason why I should like the Xbox, but his arguments were intelligent and well thought out.  He was a PC Gamer at heart, and I respected that.  Like I said in my first post, I don't hate ALL PC Gamers, I just hate the majority.  But that being said, I once told a real life friend that I had "Console gamer for life!" tattooed on my ass.  (I said I was joking later though.  )  I never really have supported the PC in a great manner, although I am a great fan of some PC Games that warrant owning a good PC.

Anyways, I get the feeling that I am hurting my argument more than anything in my state, and so I should just shut up.  SUPER, I give you full permission to edit my thread title to one more appropriate if you don't like it.

"Far too many" and "most" are too distinctly different ideas, Ninja. It helps when you make the distinction in the first place. I do agree that far too many PC gamers think that way, but it's not most.

Hey Bill, you forget that there are also dorky, pre-teen AUSTRALIANS, ASIANS and EUROPEANS who live out those 'fantasies'.

And thank GOD for console gaming. I went into an internet cafe once, and omg, the amount of cussing and almost physical violence in that game of counter-strike was incredible.
Needless to say, I've never been back into one since.
It just scares me what some of these kids get into in REAL life.

Some of my old friends (haven't seen them since school) who live for PCs, they go to these PC LAN events that are organised every now and then. I swear, they come back telling how they had a great time going down on that chick, getting a blow job in the toilets and playing soccer.
What the.......?
It's like the only time they actually do something active is when they go to the place where you're meant to sit on your ass playing all day........weird, if you ask me...

There are a few different breeds of gamers. There are the Nintendo/Sega freaks which are so similar in personality. Unfortunately the sega freak is an endangered breed and are the only ones who really get along with the Nintendo gamer.

then theres the RPG freak. Now this has become the most common freak nowadays thanks to the playstation. RPgs are super popular and are shovelware. It used to be a niche group but now its really big.

sports freaks. These people are people who play sports constantly whethe in real life or in games.

Pc Freak. The Pc doesnt seem to have a very diverse set of games. Mostly PC games are usally Shooter, Sim, MMORPG, or RTS. There are a few originals here and there but not as much variety as there is on consoles.

Xbox gamer...the new breed...i dont know about them.... "<'.'>-"

the casual gamer....this group fits in all groups and i detest them. Know your stuff..... o_O and quit being so Baka-ish

Ps2 really is a mix of breeds...i wouldnt classify them all. For soem reason they prefer ps2.

Casual gamers annoy me but I dislike this whole 'elitist' attitude we're displaying towards them. Sure they are the ones who run the industry and punish themsleves when they buy 3rd party crap but hey, it's what they do. They eitehr turn into loyists like us with more than just an intrest in games or they simply stop playing. SO i say we just put up with them and excuse them for their lack of knowledge. Somehow gaming seemed more fun when I was one of those.
As for PC gamers I've encountered the odd anti console stuff but mostly they are flaming me for owning a Mac, now thats something I just dont understand.

THE FOLLOWING EVENT IS A TRUE STORY.
I knew this guy in high school who used to be a pretty hardcore Nintendo follower. He was on top of the news, he imported stuff, he even finished OoT in one sitting (so he claimed, anyway). Then he got a new PC, one that could actually run games! *SHOCK*
Along with that, he got an ADSL connection. He got hooked on Counter-Strike and Quake III. Not even a month later, he didn't want anything to do with 'those pathetic Nintendo games'. His life had become '1337 sniper in CS, BRO!!!1'.

He sold his N64 (as well as his brand new PS2) a bit later on because he wanted money for the latest graphics card. You know, the one that could push a massive 2 more frames a second, and is VITAL for Counter-Strike =\
Now a little over two years later, and he hates everything that has to do with Nintendo or Sony. Yet he has an Xbox. He got it for Halo, and spews forth such crap as "It's F**ckin' leet, bro! A real gamers game!"

"Smash Bros.? What are you, a poof? LAUGH OUT LOUD!"

(Yes, he actually SAYS THAT). I very rarely talk to him anymore. I don't want to. So there you have it, PCs mutate people!

I'm more of a casual gamer now, I am far from being hardcore anymore.

I play moh:aa with my buds, and play ddr on the side when I need to get off PC. I play soul calibur 2 for maybe 30 minutes as well, but thats about it.

From my expierence, most PC gamers were into NES and stuff, but grew out of it as PSX and such were taking over. Most of the guys I know have a friend who has a PS2 or xbox, but doesn't play it too much.  Just me. (Most of the guys I play PC games are 20ish+)

I don't think I have ever actually flamed anyone for owning a Mac.  I trash talk the Macs regularly, and I am known to advise Mac owners to go with Linux next time around, but I don't think I have ever flamed the owners.  I just hate Macs.  It's not because I am a PC Gamer, or a console gamer, or whatever.  It's just that I am geeky enough to care about things like that.  It's a fairly common trait among computer geeks to hate Macs, as there is so little that you can actually do with them.  And their advertising just stinks to high heaven.  It's like:  "I am smarter than you, and that's why I buy an inferior PC".  The people who wrote those ads should be drug out into the street and stabbed.  It doubled my hatred for Macs right there.

People constantly try to recruit me in their clans.  I am a skilled player, and every clan wants good players.  I always turn them down for the reason that I am right positive it would hurt my enjoyment of the game.  I maintain strict ethical guidelines that most clans will immediately ignore, and I am a console gamer above all.  I am right positive that these two traits would start a bitter feud between me and another.  Besides, I just don't see the benefit of being in a clan.  (Anyways, that's a rant for another day)

Sounds to me that PC Gaming brought out the true Lamer in him.  People like him are the reason I refuse to play Counterstrike, and people like him are the reason that I have distaste for a large number of PC Gamers.

Of all the online games that are out there, do you know what the most popular one is?  [spoilers]Counterstrike.[/spoilers]

Like I said, I will perfectly admit that I know many PC Gamers that I get along great with, and I know that I might be overgeneralizing here.  But there is a common mindset among PC Gamers that says that consoles are the enemy.  Given also that they generally don't seem to mind having only 2 or 3 genres active at any time, that says to me that the majority of them are sort of shallow or casual.

I ain't going to deny this attitude, especially given my above paragraph.  There's nothing wrong with knowing dick all.  I was calmly explaining what Soul Calibur II was to the people I was talking about.  It's the casual gamers that think that they know everything that there is to know who pipe up and start telling me I'm wrong that irritate me.  Stupidity is the one thing that I truly have no tolerance for.

I would consider that flaming, I know your not after me but my computer, but I would still consider it flaming.
Yes those switch advertisments were horrible but I dont understand how you people can hate Macs. You bring up better points than most though. Most try to tell me that they hate having a one button mouse. Is one button too much for you to handle? Bloody hell, if it really bothers them that much they can plug their USB bloody 16 button, dual scrollwheel, rubber moulded exterior mouse into a mac, it'll work, and funtion just as it would on windows.

Actually, I would have to disagree with you there.  No self respecting Computer Programmer would buy a Mac.  However, no self respecting Computer Programmer would be without a Linux box.  The thing is that Linux has a MASSIVE amount of open source software for it that can do pretty much anything you might desire.  It lacks games, but that's about it.  Besides, the userbase of Macs has dropped below the userbase of Linux.  Somehow I doubt that Macs have a future in anything other than professional graphics design.

As for the single button mouse, yes, that's just stupidity right there.  I go nuts when I have to use a 2 button mouse.  I like having the third button and my wheel.  It's not that I couldn't live without a 2 button mouse, but it's much like if I owned a Mac.  It's got some of the functions of a PC, but about half as many.  The one button mouse is just a symbol of the difference between a Mac and a PC.

Simpler, more efficent, easier

Yes i understand the point your making with Linux but the saturation of the open source industry for them has made anyone trying to sell a commercial product for the OS stumble short of a profit.

Rabicle, have you ever seen this?

My last word on the issue though is just by saying that "Simple, more efficient, and easier", isn't what a PC is for.  Those 3 qualities kill the enjoyment for a lot of computer enthusiasts, as it takes control away from the user.  A good example is this last week.  I have become fairly proficient in vbscript, where previously I have coded almost purely in C/C++ or Assembly.  The language is almost shamefully easy to use.  Things that would take a whole page of code in C are done in one line in vbscript.  But by making the language THAT easy to use, control is taken away from the programmer.  It makes the code slow and unwieldy, and oftentimes will make it very difficult to make the program behave in exactly the manner that you want it to.

This same thing applies to Macs.  Sure you don't have to "deal" with all the stuff that PC users do, but you also get very little freedom in what you want to do with your computer.

What do I need to do with my computer other than homework, surfing the web, email, chatting, music, play games, (yes I have games for it) image editing and choose a cool desktop picture? Sometimes I get the feeling that there is something strange and exciting that windows users get to do on the DOS command line or something. Like I'm missing out on the highly enjoyable task of partitioning my hard drive needlessly.
btw I can partition my harddrive, it's easy.

And that video was pretty amusing, yes it's true that Blizzard, id and Cyan are the only companies reat the mac with simultaneos release dates, and it bothers me. Althoguh what he said about upgrading was bordering in bullshite.
