How come you don't own a PS2? (Why?)
« on: September 14, 2003, 03:22:38 AM »
The PS2 is the most popular console of this generation, with backward-compatibility to the most popular console of the last generation (PS1), and has the widest variety of games, and SOME of the best/most unique games like Final Fantasy, Grand Theft, RC Copter, Gran Turismo, Rez, Ico, Dance Dance Revolution, and so on.

Seems to me that an avid gamer NOT owning a PS2 is like someone shooting themselves in the foot.

So how come you don't own one?

I own a PS2, but I don't see why it's necessary for gaming.  I've said it before, I'll say it again, my PS2 is for RPGs only.

Well, I don't own a PS2 because I'm happy with what's on my Cube. Also, I don't exactly have the funds necessary to maintain a healthy Cube/PS2 life.

As for the popular games you  mentioned the only ones that I might try are FF and Ico. I don't give THREE sh1ts if GTA is the most popular game for PS2; I just will not play that. And I hear that FF is going down the crapper and that the good ones ended at 7 or earlier, so I may as well just dish out $50 for a PS1.

If this is what you call shooting yourself in the foot, then please do it again. I'm perfectly OK with that.

i own a ps2- but i got it after my gamecube- i am happy with my gamecube, but i really bought a ps2 for the rpgs- i am not a big fan of the big name games, but the rpgs are pretty good- so far i have played on the ps2- final fantasy X, suikoden 3, xenosaga, breath of fire dragon quarter, grandia xtream, and some psx rpgs i never got around to playing- i have also played (and owned) on the ps2 madden 2004, shinobi, nhl2k3- i think the ps2 is a pretty good system, but i like it because of the rpgs- nintendo is good because of the nintendo games and the rpgs coming out for it next year (harvest moon, tales, baten kaitos, ff crystal chronical)
i call the big one bitey.

At the time I chose my console I knew about the PS2 that it was released earlier than the other two (didn't know how much, expected 2-3 years) and would be replaced by its successor within a short time and therefore considered it a dying system. Also it is technically inferior and more expensive than the GC, which were also tilting factors. Besides, I hate the PS2 gamepad.

The XB wasn't in question. It was too expensive and just the MS brand name was enough to make me hate it.

DVD playback was no factor. In fact I didn't even know about the DVD capabilities of the XB and PS2, but I have a DVD drive in my PC. Well, I don't have any DVDs and don't plan on buying any in the near or distant future, but my CD drive got FUBARed by UT2003 so I figured it would be a waste of money to get another CD drive.

Most of those games you list I don't care for (especially GTA) or can get on the PC with better graphics and controls. Of course not all, but you can't have everything. I don't think I should get a PS2 even if there are games on it I like. I've chosen and I have to live with that choice.

There are 2 reasons I do not own a PS2.

1)  It's made by Sony.

2)  There aren't enough AAA games for me to play on it.  The only games I was really dying for on the system were Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Xenosaga.

SH2, SH3, and MGS2 all received very nice PC ports.  I discovered I hated MGS2 when I played it on a real PS2 though.  Xenosaga remains the one game on PS2 that I absolutely hate living without.  But you know what?  My new roommate has the game and a PS2.  Problem solved.  I feel absolutely no need to rent any PS2 games.  I am much more enthused about the GCN games coming out.  I dislike GTA and their PC ports, I dislike FFX, I dislike DDR and Rez.  I am actually kind of fond of Gran Turismo, but my roommate has a copy of GT3, and I haven't even touched it.  That says something doesn't it?

THe PS2 just has dick all that really appeals to me.  There's about 4 or 5 games that I would probably buy if I owned the system, and no more.  My GCN collection seems to be up to 11 games, and there's more I want.  (although 2 are extra discs.)

Luckily your roommate has that PS2, though, right Ninja?

I personally never buy a system unless there's at least 10 games for it I'm interested in. That was the case with the PS2 for me, after some research. I currently own 9 games, but there's many more that I'd like to get.

My Cube collection is up to 20 now, with some 60 or so more games I'm interested in- THAT'S why I own a Gamecube first and foremost.

I own a Gamecube exclusively for two reasons:

1.  The games appeal to me much more than what PS2 has to offer.

2.  I can only afford to have one system.  God knows I've spent a freaking fortune already just on Gamecube.  I'd probably wind up living in a box (or hungry like Grey Ninja was) if I let myself get carried away with more consoles.

well i can afford to support all three systems if i wanted to, but i dont i bought my GCN to play nintendo games, and the few third party games that came along that are good, thankfully the GCN has far more third party games i want than the n64. the only reason i would own a PS2 is for RPG's.

i really have no need to buy a ps2. i dont think the fact that its the most popular system should convince anyone to buy any system, and backwards compatibility doesnt matter to me becouse i never owned a ps1. i bought my gamecube becouse it has the games that i want to play. while the ps2 does have some great games, theres too many games i want to buy for gc to be able to support another system.

"and backwards compatibility doesnt matter to me becouse i never owned a ps1."

That should be incentive- if you already had a PS1, why would you need backwards compatibility when you can just play your PS1 games on your PS1? I never had a PS1, so I'm catching up on all it's great games with my PS2.

Anyway, regardless of this whole matter, I think everyone should play Ico at least once- I don't care if you have to rent a PS2, or borrow it from a friend, you all need to play it. That's an order!

while i see your point, i can barely find the time and money to buy and play the gamecube titles i'm interested in. i would probably be better off buying a ps1 for cheap with the amount of ps2 titles that i really want to play. rpgs would be my biggest reason to buy a ps2, but theres some great rpgs coming to gamecube fairly soon to drain my wallet a little bit more.

as for ico, its one of the only games that i'm interested in for the ps2. i have never played the game, but i've heard great things about it. theres a sequal coming out as well, isnt there? if the sequal manages to be as good as what i heard about the original, i might buy a ps2 yet.

I don't have the money for another system, and I don't really care.  I bought a used PS1 from gamestop mostly for RPG's, which is the only thing I'd want a PS2 for.  PS2 has some great games that I'd love to have for the GC, but there are alot more I want for the GC that make up for it.

I mainly have a GC for the exclusives, and GBA connectivity doesn't hurt.  Oh yeah, Nintendo doesn't like the idea of pay-to-play online, so there's a plus.  I love te controllers much better than the PS(2)'s too.

So they don't even bother with it, unless you're counting the GameSpy tunneling feature which, by the way, has been available for Xbox and PS2 for a while now.

I have too many reasons. First of all, the PS2 is so under-powered it's laughable. Gameplay is what matters most, to be sure, but I don't want to spend a fourth of my life waiting through load times. If I buy a PS2, I get less. The graphics are worse and I haven't seen anything yet that blew me away like Rogue Leader. The controller is better than the GameCube's in some ways, but the the Dual Shock is just a SNES rip-off with joysticks attached.  My GameCube can't play DVD's, but my PC can. It's also worth noting the PS2 can't read VCD's and S-Video CD's. I'm also dissapointed in the lineup of games.

I'm sure everyone here(especially Mouse Clicker) knows I dislike GTA. It's just not fun for me. I can only think of one exclusive game that I want to play on PS2 and that is Castlevania. Even though the PS2 has more games than GameCube, I am glad I got GameCube. I must have played SSBM for 200 hours. I love Eternal Darkness and Metroid Prime, and the PS2 simply doesn't have games of that caliber. Now Viewtiful Joe is coming and I think it's fantastic. This game takes the best aspects of the Matrix and comic books and puts them into a fantastic game. I could go on for hours about Rogue Leader, the Wave Bird, the GameBoy Player, Too Human, and F-Zero, but I don't need to. When it comes down to it, anybody attacking me for choosing the GameCube over the PS2, will never understand that fun is all that matters, and on that note, Nintendo wins.

2 more things to mention.  DVD playback is a turnoff for me, and my PC handles PSX games far better than the Ps2 could ever hope to.

Why would DVD playback be a turnoff? It's not like it makes the actual console portion run any worse. It's actually been dream for me to be able to watch DVD's in my room since the only other DVD player in my house is hooked up to the TV my dad always watches.

It's a turnoff because it simply reeks of the old days before the NES.  Consoles became integrated right into computers you know.  My Mom actually has an Adam Computer with a built in Coleco Vision.  It was things like that that really helped to destroy the industry all those years ago.  Nintendo brought it back to life, and when they did, they made a promise to make consoles that only played games.  That promise has lasted for over 25 years.

The PS2 opened that door a crack when adding DVD playback.  MS opened the door a fair bit more when they made a PC into a console.  With the next generation, I am sure that Sony and MS will blow the door clean off.  I shudder to think of things like the upcoming PSX from Sony, or the planned HomeStation from MS.  It's just not right.
