Being a Good Neighbor
« on: September 04, 2003, 05:57:44 AM »
For the people here who know me, know that I rarely start a topic unless I absolutely need to.  The reason for this one is very simple:  New users and their big ass avatars.  And sometimes users who have been here since these new boards opened.

I have seen lately more and more users with the what I see as a "Scarlet Letter" type punishment from the mods with avatars that let everyone know that they have violated the rules, either the image is too large, or they are using an image that is not on their own site, or have permission to use their bandwidth.  I have no problem with this, and agree with the action the moderators are taking.  Are they giving warning first or what?

I am wondering, should we go out of our way to help inform the user of their error, or just ignore it and let the mods catch it and take care of it in their "own way".  I mean, I have on more than one occasion gone out of my way to inform several people of their indiscretion, only to be ignored or attacked for what I consider being a "good neighbor"  I use dial-up to access the internet, broadband access is not available in my area other that through satellite cable (which I am hoping to obtain soon), so being forced to have to deal with both a slow acting board and people who are basically too lazy to read the rules, or if they do read the rules, refuse to adhere to them because they are generally being simple asses..

I agree completely.  When someone tells you that your avatar is too big, it should be taken as a compliment(that someone is nice enough to warn you before the mods grab you).  Though I have broken a few of those rules recently(accidently mind you), none of my avatars have been 50,000+ bits, which is absolutely insane.  It doesn't really make a difference on my comp(besides the size) but I know others' browsers are shattered by the super-big avatars.  So remember everyone, read that ToS and take your fellow forum users' advice.

I "earn" people quite often. I used to put them in the thread, but now I often PM.  Methinks the oldbies should help the newbies.  You can see me in action in the "Link Soap" thread..

I tell a person whenever their avatar is too large, and though I don't get flamed, they probably usually ignore me.  I try to help out.  But if they get banned that's fine with me too

I love PGC's avatar limit- I've been to a lot of other forums that don't have any sort of limit, so of course people have huge ass avatars and huge ass pics in their signatures, and it takes FOREVER to load the pages, even on my DSL connection.

I agree with Mouse Clicker. What other people may call  "strict" I call it "sensible."  There are some sites that fit the Mouse Clicker's  description to the letter. I won't say names (To protect the stupid) but their avatars are yay big, and their Signitures have these HUGE Jpegs that take up half the damn post (Which usually contain drivel anyway.) For some reason, they tend to be fanboys mouthing off garbage (Speaking 1337 and whatnot). When I had dial-up it was a pain so agonizing, I needed Tynonol to fix me up. After realizing there wasn't enough intelligence on those forums, I avoid them and feel smarter for doing so. PGC gets props for keeping the peace (and sanity)

As far as being a good cyber-neighbor, its the thought that counts.  If they spit it back at you, snitch! The rules are there for a reason.

Yeah, I also agree.  And that Tynonol stuff. . . does it work really well?
