Light problem with the GBA SP?
« on: August 26, 2003, 05:37:31 AM »
I just bought a GBA SP and find that when I switch the light on, I can see the bright light section (about 3-4mm height) around the bottom of the screen. It is a little bit hard to explain. Basically, it look like the light is not evenly display and there are 3-4mm strip toward to the bottom of the screen that is brighter than the rest of the screen. I also went to the store and look at the demo one and it have the same problem. Is this normal or just a fluke on the one I bought and the one demo at the store? The light is pretty annoying and distracting me when playing game

Look at the screen from above, you'll notice that the light is located at the bottom. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just the way the thing's built.

Just to clarify something. What I meant of the bright section is that there is a section about 3-4mm height from the bottom edge (about 3-4mm from the bottom edge upward) that is brighter than the rest of the screen. It look more like light reflection which create a bluish strip that is very distracting to me So you think this is normal? It is hard to believe that Nintendo design the GBA SP this way (the brighter section is very noticable and annoying).

Add: It looks similar to this

I know exactly what you meen! I had the same problem. I bet your gba sp, is a black one. There seems to be something wrong with some gba sp black series. You could read my post at gamefaqs.com :

http://cgi.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.asp?board=969&topic=9716456&page=0

Or you could do the easy thing, and read the the 3 messages I posted there, which I have now posted here down below!

My problem(TOPIC): I finally baught myself a black gba sp, but what a terrible frontlight!

1st  post:

The light was very bluish, way more than I ever could imagine. And there was a very strong blue line almost at the bottom of the screen, that only went away at one specific angle. Why couldn't nintendo just have used standard "yellow" light?

Boy was this annoying, now I have to return it, and get my money back. And the most annoying thing is that I already had ordered gba sp accessories some days ago, and they are one their way.

It's real funny that I have not heard anyone else complain about this.

2nd post :

Well when I use it with the frontlight off, in good light, and then turn on the frontlight, I can see that every color gets/becomes a little bluish/lighter color.

But, that might be how everyone has it, I don't really know anyone else who own one. But the very bad thing is the blue line that goes across the screen almost at the bottom. My friend and my family said that it wasn't hardly noticeable, but I must have perfection. So the blue line bothers the crap out of me.( Can't possibly keep it, if it's supposed to be like that).

3rd solution post:

I went back to the store today, and looked at some other black gba sps. They all had the similar problem. Maybe something wrong with a black gba sp, series or something.

Anyway I traded it in for a platinum gba sp, which indeed was perfect. So now I am jolly as ****!

This may be a warning to anyone buying a european black gba sp. Before you buy, check that the frontlight is ok before purchasing.

Actually, the one I got was the platinum color one. I returned that one and went to some stores to see other platinum color and they all look fine. This is a little bit wierd to me. I actually ordered a special Boktai edition (dual red/black sp) and the one I got have dust under the screen and also the bluish lines as well I will get a new one next week. Hopefully the new one will be perfect. It is very annoying that the problem seem to be exist one just some GBA SP but not everyone of them (the one at a local Bestbuy and Target have no problem, well the blue lines are not very noticeable at the least).

Well, my black SP does that as well, but it's not like I notice. Sure, you see that black areas at the bottom are slightly purple, it's the same purple the SGB used, but after a while (or more exactly, once I start playing) I simply don't notice anymore. BTW, a yellow light would make blue colors look weird and that would be more visible than the little purple at the bottom. After all, if your game doesn't use a lot of black that's nothing you'll see anyway.
