Has nintendo every licensed music from well known bands for any of their games? I am not one to complain about this issue since nintendo has made great soundtracks for their first party games (ex: zelda and mario). However, I think it would be kind of neat if they did so for some upcoming games such as 1080 snowboarding or f-zero.
I think the most daring thing nintendo has every done that is close to licensing music is that they licensed clothing (I think it was tommy hilfiger clothing in the N64 version of 1080)
anyone else agree? Disagree?

Nintendo doesn't license music because it detracts from the spirit of the game. Linking games to modern day events makes them become dated very quickly. It's the same reason that movies such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones used orchestrated music. Using currently popular songs would date the movie at a very fast rate, while orchestrated tracks are fairly timeless. They wear well with age.

Sure it may age the game quickly, but what are they going to put instead of some popular rock and rap? I know they're not going to put classic music. My bet is there going to imitate there own popular rock and rap music and not license anyone at all.

I don't understand why you wouldn't want to license music. The Tony Hawk series has popular music on it, so why not follow in the footsteps of one of the greatest extreme sports games?

Imagine if the original Super Mario Bros had, instead of the now classic Mario tunes, songs from Prince, Duran Duran, Cindy Lauper, and other artists that were popular at the time.

Not long from now, games like SSX and the Tony Hawk series will be absolutely unplayable without a mute button.

well the thign ab out licensing muisc is muisc doesnt all have to come form the present. It can come from both present and the past. Tony Hawk 2(the one i had for dc) had all sorts of really old hip hop and punk songs... + a bunch of new songs. They were just good songs that skaters like

Really they should go and interview some snow boarders and see what music they like.

actually F-Zero's music by nintendo has always been amazing,
and from recent impressions of F-Zero GX they say the music is phenomenal.

imagine mario bros 1 with licensed music??? do you mean stripping down the music to midi files with no lyrics?, because that's the only way that could've happened.

it's true music can outdate game's faster, but people are not gonna put on mute in say tony hawk when they play it years from now... do people put on mute when they hear classic rock....? NO

do people go out of there way to listen to old songs, buy old albums, listen to old music radio stations, goto concerts of old bands playing songs 30 years old, yes yes yes yes, etc, etc...

it's fun to have real music in some games, but most of the best music in games is made by the videogame companies themselves, especially rpgs.

I think you guys are missing what he is saying....he's not saying that RPGs and Mario and Zelda should have lisenced music. He means in games where it would fit e.g. racing games, extreme sports games, etc. Of course you don't wanna hear Britney Spears singing the theme to Metroid or something off the wall like that, but there are many situations where a lisenced song could work.

I found myself skipping a LOT of songs on THPS3. The problem with liscenced music is the fact that we all have different tastes. I loved the music in THPS1, but beyond that, found it eh. Also, it can get repetative to hear those songs a lot. While the music is still fresh, it is nice though. I still loath Bad Religion after playing Crazy Taxi non-stop on DC.

My big bro is a hardcore fan of game misic and he's 18, it would phat if Nintendo licensed music like Konami does with its Castlevania sound tracks/ Silent Hill, you could go to www.gamemusic.com and search for your favorite songs of games like Kingdom Hearts,etc.

maybe nintendo should make some songs made by bands exclusive to the game (ex: I think Offspring did for crazy taxi)
I think it all depends on the song chosen for the game. Some modern songs can outdate a game very quickly. However, some songs are such classics that they not only would it add to the gameplay experience, but it would also make new fans who could appreciate the music more.
A win-win situation for both nintendo and the artist.

I perfer they make their own music, they are doing a well enough job of it so. Personally I think liscensed music is just a way to cover up a very bad game. And if they maker makes the music itself it will convey the mood they want perfectly. (Not only that but getting liscened music is expensive.)

And what are those guys also, the mtv age, they listen to rock and rap all the time. So it would make sense for Nintendo to make it more appealing by licensing popular artists. I mean look at a game like NBA street vol. 2, the games music was good but it didn't get you in the game as well as the licensed did. Especially if you have a system.............

but i guess that's my opinion. Extreme sports games should stick to the popular music of its age.

Extreme sports games do work quite well with liscenced music. But I don't see the point of nintendo taking the time to liscense music. Reason being that as far as I know, they don't make the types of games that work well with them. Although I will point out that, having played fps's like conflict desert storm can be quite entertaining while metallica, or dare I say even christmas music.
