I'm a bit confused. I'll wait for the screen shots of the game. Maybe then it'll all make sense. Of course, we probably won't see screenshots until 5 months before the game's release.

2D adventure, awesome!  That is where platform games belong.  I can't wait.

In my opinion a 2D adventure isn't really 2D unless it uses sprites.  Polygon games that play like 2D games often aren't that great.  Hopefully if this is true (which I really doubt it is since I've never heard of the source) it will be an exception to this rule.

One thing though is that if it's 2D it has to have like over 50 levels like SMB3 or SMW.  10 levels is acceptable in a full 3D platformer where each area has multiple objectives but in a one goal per level based game there has to be a lot of levels.

A 2D game though certainly doesn't sound like the "true followup to Super Mario 64" that Mario 128 is often heralded as.

"A 2D game though certainly doesn't sound like the "true followup to Super Mario 64" that Mario 128 is often heralded as."

The only people I've heard herald it as the true followup to SM64 (implying SMS wasn't) are people who, for whatever reason, hated SMS. Often for the most silly reasons too, like it not having a GREEN Yoshi and being too tropical. Miyamoto himself has commented that he felt SMS was too similar to SM64 and that Mario 128 will be very different. So people expecting the game to be the more traditional, straigh-forward SM64 sequel they wanted but didn't get from SMS are bound to be dissapointed again.

actually, unless i'm mistaken, miyamoto said that mario 128 would be the true successor to mario 64.

Kingvudu's got it right. Miyamoto himself said mario 128 would be the true follow up to SM64. As far as the only people saying that goes, I enjoyed SMS quite a bit and still realize it was only SM64-2 with some upgraded graphics.  The 2D to 3D switch thing does sound mighty interesting. But, I try not to get too excited unless I read this kindof stuff on PGC or IGN.

"actually, unless i'm mistaken, miyamoto said that mario 128 would be the true successor to mario 64."

It's the context that counts. When Miyamoto said it would be the true successor he meant it would be different than SM64 because he feels the true successor to a Mario game should be different and not just an update on the same exact formula like he feels SMS was.
When most of the anti-SMS types say it will be a true successor they mean it WILL be just an update on the same formula of Mario 64 unlike SMS which they don't believe is a true successor to it because they felt it was too different with the tropical setting, water-pack, etc...
It's confusing, I know, but Miyamoto did elaborate on the comment and make his feelings about the games VERY clear in the interview.

if this is true then it is some of the best news i heard in a long time
i think it could work out easilly- the overworlds could be in 3d and the levels in 2d (with 3d graphics)
if you come accross something that seems interesting then you can switch the camera from the side 2d view to a 3d behind you view to find diffent paths and special items
i just hope this is true- and if it is- the return of 2 player mario games!!!!
i call the big one bitey.

Sounds like a plausible explanation, I was having trouble visualizing it.  But, yah  you could have a path going off in the background of the 2D world so you would switch to 3D to take it.  And maybe some bosses and enemies have to be beat in 3D.

Knowing Miyamoto, it is going to be revolutionary on a universal scale.

Bring it.

Sounds more like wishful thinking, and isn't it odd only a small fan site has info on the next Mario game? Most likely a hoax.

I can see how switching 2D and 3D would be considered revolutionary. But I do hope this is reported on either PGC or IGN.

Secondly, if it is a hoax, compliments to the person who thought of it.

I don't see what makes this any more reliable than one of you making it up and writing it here.  Anyone could say something that vague, and possibly even be right in the end.
