xbox live price structure

does anybody know what the pricing is going to be for an xbox live subscription once the free year ends?
i saw on gamerfeed.com that the price structure for xbox live in japan is only going to be $30/year or $5.70/month, much lower than i anticipated.  i'm thinking they're lowering prices in japan to hopefully stir up some interest.  i haven't heard any pricing for xbox live in the u.s.a. though.  did i miss it, or has it not been announced yet?
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

It's $50 a year or if you want to do it per/month it's $5.99.

Are you sure it's $5.99 a month? That would work itself out to almost $72 a year, $22 more than if they charge you yearly. Seems odd MS would do that.

Well most people would only use it for a month or two, therefore they wouldn't have to waste $$$ for unused months.

50 bucks a year?  That's not bad.  You think they are making any money on this?

Ah, I guess that makes sense. There ARE people stupid enough to pay month by month for a whole year, though.

50 bucks isnt bad for a closed server fee. Xbox live is kinda like killing one videogame purchase out of the year no biggie. the monthly fee is just for ppl who doesnt want to commit to the service a whole year so its kinda flexable on a budget.

Accually they are changing the starter kit and the subscription to be closer to the price you opt to pay it monthly.
