Can Nintendo afford to make a powerful handheld?
« on: June 26, 2016, 02:10:12 PM »
Next year is the release of the NX. We don't know if its a hybrid or not but suppose it isn't and Nintendo is working on the next handheld, can they make it powerful?

I'm asking this because people seem to think that you need more power inorder to get more software and that this can benefit Nintendo to develop relationship between third parties.

While I can get the fact that they need third parties (sort of) I don't know if Nintendo needs to waste a lot of cash to make an overpowered system because the worst case scenario would end up like the Vita.

What do you guys think?

Even if it's a Vita level of power, that would be fine for me. I think no matter, though, Western third parties are more interested in consoles and mobile, so I doubt they'll dedicate a lot of time and money to making games for whatever Nintendo's handheld is. Japanese third-parties on the other hand would be well suited to make content for the 3DS's successor, as the 3DS and Vita have been selling rather admirably in Japan, while the console market isn't doing so hot.

My question is how powerful is "powerful"?  I think indie devs would like the handheld space more with so many consoles games going for bigger, better, and VR-er.  It'd probably be easier for smaller, less demanding games to stand on on a handheld.  Nintendo could probably price themselves out of their position, since the handheld market is a little more uncertain these days.  But specs could bring software, which brings sales.

The next hand held device would have to be more powerful. There is no point making something if it is just the same as the 3DS

If they can make as powerful or slightly more powerful than the Vita and sell it between $150-200 and it comes with Pokemon GO built in, I think they can succeed.
