Studio cites changing industry in desire to go out with a bang

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/42260/rive-to-be-final-game-from-two-tribes

After over 15 years of game development, Two Tribes will be going out with RIVE.

A post on the company's website yesterday confirmed that the studio would close following the release of the eShop title, which is currently slated for September of this year. The studio will continue to support existing games, but will not produce any new titles.

In the statement, Two Tribes identified a key reason for the shutdown as having too much experience in the old ways of game development:

"As said, we’ve been working in the games industry since early 2000, making us dinosaurs, old farts, grandfathers or whatever you want to call us. This is great, because we’ve got a lot experience, but it also means that we act like a typical grandfather: slow and totally unaware of what is hot and what is not. Don’t get us wrong: we absolutely love making games, and we strongly feel that we’re good at making them. However, ask us anything about new industry developments, and often a big question mark will appear above our heads."

Well, that's a shame. I didn't like their Toki Tori work, but Rive looked really promising in the demo so I hoped that was an indication of where the studio was going.

Toki Tori 2 was a brilliant game, my top 3 of 2013.

It's a shame they got burned for thinking that gamers are smarter than they actually are.

I agree that Toki Tori 2 was an amazing design. Open world puzzles where the player needs to actively learn from the environment to succeed. Easily one of 10 best experiences I've had on Wii U... and from someone who is staunchly against digital only games that's saying a lot.

It's a shame that more people either didn't get it, or simply didn't like it.

I'm looking forward to RIVE.  The demo was very entertaining, and I have a lot of respect for the development team.

I think Azeke is right. They make a different level of game compared to others.

lowest common denominator gaming claims another victim.
