And the rumor mill flies....
« on: July 16, 2003, 11:11:12 PM »
Apparently, according to the latest rumors... Shinji Mikami will be leaving Capcom to start his own development studio.  How much you want to bet that that studio will become an integral part of Nintendo if it comes to pass?

Better yet, how much you want to bet that this rumor is complete BS?

Or what do you think might happen to Production Studio 4's games?  Or the Resident Evil franchise?

I don't see why he'd leave, especially with Capcom's faith in PS4 restored after the strong sales of Viewtiful Joe in Japan. So I think it's BS.

To add more... erm... rumor to this rumor, do you guys all remember the rumor about Nintendo setting up a giant development studio with the best people from various companies (some square guys, Shinji Mijami, Kojima etc.)?

*puts speculation hat on*

Well maybe Shinji Mikami is leaving Capcom to join this mysterious new development studio at Nintendo? He does seem to like Nintendo a great deal, and he only makes games for GC now anyway. Hmmmm.......

well its obvious Nintendo gamers love Scary games...i think RE has a pretty secure spot to stay on Nintendo consoles. If Shinji Mikami left it wouldnt kill the series most likely for Nintendo fans because Flagship(the company who worked on re2 and four swords) loves Nintendo. However the RE franchise is getting quite old and the story is dying. If Shinji Mikami does leave to work for BigN's new division then worrying about Nintendo's future in maturness is assured. I mean this guy came up with Devil May Cry and Resident Evil and a few others.
Also, what would  happen to survival horror if Shinj Mikami ditched resident evil and made a new survival franchise..a Nintendo owned and exclusive franchise? Also him and miyamoto working together! I wih he would leave...i love capcom...but Nintendo could use some new directors. I mean Nintendo has Takeda, Aonoma, and Miyamoto..thats really it. Also, those guys are really similar. There hasnt been alot of diversity since Yokoi-san left the company.

Why do you say that? Resident Evil and Zero sold averagely and are two of the lowest selling Resident Evil games. Eternal Darkness also bombed hard.

RE1 remake actually surpassed its expections(sp?) But 0 bombed badly.

But RE4 seems like the best one in the serie. With its new camera angle system and awesome graphics and other that stuff its should sell nicely.

Oh ok, i see what you mean *looks at the hundreds of Eternal Darkness topics *

And i think RE4 will sell extremely well, alot better than remake and zero.

The REmake sold WAY above expectations and though RE0 apparently didn't reach Capcom's sales expectations, it didn't bomb. Not even close. Both games sold well. Not average.
I think average is just like three or four hundred thousand copies if not lower.
As for the games being among the lowest selling of the series. I think the same would be true if it were on the PS2. I don't think the series is necessarily dying out or anything but it's no longer the phenomenon it once was.

RE remake sold less than 400,000 in America. RE0 sold less then 200,000 in America. They both sold even less in Japan. Thats average in my opinion.

I remember hearing that the REmake sold over 800,000 worldwide which is way above average.
I'm not exactly sure how well RE0 sold but I'm sure it was at least above 400,000 worldwide which HAS to be above average. Probably quite a bit above average too.

Lets not get into a discussion about sales (although in my opinion RE sold average )

Anyway, wouldnt it be awesome if Miyamoto and Shinji Mikami made a game together.

What's important is I have both RE1 and Zero, and that Capcom gave me a free S.T.A.R.S. t-shirt.

As soon as work on my Shenmue music vid is done, I can move on to my Eternal Darkness trailer and a RE1+0 music vid.

Resident Evil: Rebirth was expected to sell 400,000 copies worldwide.  It more than doubled that.

I don't really have much more to add, but yes, I agree with you all that Mikami leading another Nintendo development team would be a great day for Nintendo fans.  With Dyack and Mikami making games only for Nintendo, maybe the "kiddy" talk would die out forever.

Actually, both RE and RE0 are million sellers.

Also, remember when Mikami "jokingly" said he would be fired if Viewtiful Joe didn't sell well? Well it's sold well in Japan, and we'll see about the US, but maybe he wasn't joking after all...just maybe.

Also remember that it's unusual for people in Japan to leave companies they have worked for for a long time. Yokoi only left Nintendo because of the shameful failer of the Virtual Boy, and Mikami hasn't shamed himself as far as I know. While people in American and Europe leave companies all the time, it's very unsual in Japan, especially when youa re talking about the big boys like Mikami.

Actually nobody joked about being fired.  He just said that he wouldn't be allowed to produce the types of games he likes anymore.  PS: Mikami wasn't even at e3, so of course it wasn't him.

"I mean Nintendo has Takeda, Aonoma, and Miyamoto..thats really it. Also, those guys are really similar. There hasnt been alot of diversity since Yokoi-san left the company."

Agreed.  Aside from Retro Studios Nintendo's first party stuff is all very similar to the Miyamoto/EAD style.  It would be nice to have something different as well.  Some mature games from a Japanese producer would really help Nintendo's lineup.  Right now only North American teams are making mature Nintendo games.

However I don't think it's too likely for Mikami to be leaving in the first place unless he really wants to work for Nintendo.  It's not like Capcom is going to can him or anything.  And the whole rumour of Nintendo making some sort of designer dream team sounds like a total dream itself.  I really doubt that would happen.
