Weird controller patent... what do you think?

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2015/12/nintendo-touchscreen-controller-patent-offers-clues-about-upcoming-nx/

I saw this yesterday and I'm surprised we don't have an article up yet. It looks very interesting and even compelling to me. Just wondering what everyone else thinks.

I think it's an interesting idea to fill what would traditionally be just plastic with more screen. I can see it working well with 3d games where you move the camera since it gives more periphery vision. Although I can't see it working well 2d games or no free camera movement games since the games will need to be unnecessarily more detailed to account for the extra real estate that mostly will be taken up with your hands.

Looks interesting, but it's just a patent right now.

I look forward to screaming "MCDONALDS" into this thing to get rid of an ad.

Thankfully, that's a Sony patent so we should be safe.

Ok so that is a man with a widow's peak wearing a onesie and playing a horsey rising game on his Wii saddle. What?

The reason Zelda Wii U was delayed has suddenly become clear...

The words you're looking for are "receding hairline".

What I like: the idea of a controller where the button inputs & controls can change per game, and the limitation isn't based on what buttons are on the controller.  One game could even have several sets of controls, depending on what you're doing in-game (really, look at the pics in the article, pretty cool).

what I don't like: touchscreen command inputs.  Unless it's improved upon what my phone or ipad can do, I have no faith that precise movements will be possible on this style of controller.  Shyguy's probably right that this is no more than a patent for an idea they've toyed with.  That said, this could turn out just like the Wii U's gamepad where it's another obscure deviation from the other consoles that'll turn-off 3rd party developers from bothering with it.

No, that cannot happen again. Surely they have learned their lesson by now. Don't squash my hopes that NX will actually be something to get excited about.

I don't want another touch screen device, period. Unless they make a full on dedicated gaming tablet that doubles as a console and portable with HDMI out then I don't even want them including touch controls for backwards compatibility or DS Virtual Console.

I own Wii U, PS4, PS3, and PC.

I'm more concerned about having a standard controller option. For example, I have a bucket of controllers for my Wii U. They are all shapes and sizes: Wii Remotes, Nunchuks, a Gamepad, a Wii U Pro Controller, a Gamecube controller, and a Wii Classic Controller Pro. I would like to be able to say with confidence that I could play any multiplayer game on my Wii U with at least two players. But that's not true because of this crazy ass control system that Nintendo has added onto over the years. As for my Xbox 360, on the other side of the entertainment center, I have two controllers. I can play any two player game on that system (and a lot of original Xbox games) with those two controllers. So, about $350 in Nintendo controllers almost gets me what I could have for $90 in Xbox controllers. Truly, NX needs to trim the fat.

NX will be something to get excited about if:

1) You're a fan of Nintendo and some other Japanese developers games that they have close ties to.
2) You're excited by the reveal of what unique functionality the "hybrid" console provides, with the caveat that Nintendo will be the only ones that utilize it well.

They've been doing goofy stuff with their console like this since the N64 (what a weird controller).  Sorry if this bursts your balloon, but I really, really, REALLY don't have any reason to believe we're going to see a wave of 3rd party support on the NX.
