The Next Generation Nintendo Console Codename according to spong is N5. As in Nintendo 5. Makes sense to me.

NES - N1
SNES - N2
N64 - N3
GCN - N4
? - N5

I still think it should be NES5 it sounds so... futuristic and high tech... imagine the logo for the NES5 (or n5) anyway if the can't think of a better name N5 is good and it sounds pretty cool

N5 isn't that bad of a choice for a name actually.  It's simple and like "XBox" it sounds high tech without really specifying what the product is.  Compare this to "Gamecube" which sounds like a toy.  N5 sounds like it could be a spaceship engine if you didn't know better.  Plus if Nintendo went with Gamecube 2 as the name they would be one number behind Playstation 3 and would constantly be one number behind which could look inferior in the eyes of really uninformed people.  "Hey Playstation is up to 5 and Nintendo is still at 4."  I know it's dumb but you know some idiot would think that way.  N5 is a higher number so that "one behind" issue is gone.

Now the console needs a good look to go with the high techy name.  Something like a purple cube will NOT fly.  It should look more like a piece of electronics than a toy.

I agree with Ian Sane. The "N5" has a certain ring to it. I don't see Nintendo keeping the "GameCube" name, especially since the Cube was not as successful as they had hoped it would be.

The number theory that some have suggested actually makes a lot of sense, which is why Microsoft should not call their next console the "X-Box2".

"N5" is simple and bit mysterious. I hope they come up with a killer design for the machine, something elegant. Although, Nintendo seems to like gimmicks - I just hope the new console is not in the shape of a number "5" HAHAHA.

"I just hope the new console is not in the shape of a number "5" HAHAHA."

Better yet.  They ship the new console in five pieces, each sold seperately, that are all required for the machine to even run.  Then just to make sure they commit business suicide they ship different amounts of the five pieces so that they have like a million piece 1's and only 100,000 piece 4's.

Yeah, call it 5 Megaton, name the processor Warhead and manufacture it in Hiroshima...
Hehe, imagine N got inspired by Megatokyo and packs its next console into an "EDS". Now, THAT would get those 12 year olds coming in like lawyers smelling money.

Yes, but 2 + 3 = 5

Anyways, I've always wanted the next system to be called Nintendo Nex.

And I find it really funny that all of the fanboys find ways to twist a default N5 name into being an actual title. Just wait for what Nintendo has to deliver. I've almost 99% sure that they WILL NOT name it N5.

I think that N5 would make more sense than NES5 because the name Nintendo Entertainment System was not used in Japan so they may not know what the term NES stands for. They would, IMO, have an easier time knowing what the N on its own means.

The COOLEST names out there so far, i think, are:
Nintendo Nexus <---------coolest
Nintendo 5 (or N5, or N [to the power of] 5)
Nintendo Megaton

How cool would it be if the next console was called 'Dolphin'?
I loved that name!

Alright, I vote that we hereafter refer to Nintendo's next console as the N5 until the official name is released.  It doesn't sound so stupid as GameCube 2, and isn't so presumptuous as Nexus.

hey man that N5 sounds really sleek but without a good design for the system it wont make any difference. i always thought that like a silvery N64 would look cool.

N5 does show that Nintendo's been in the business longer than Sony and Microsoft, but isn't "5" a step backward? As in, the last system to use that kind of name was the Nintendo 64, or N64.

64 > 5

Still, cool name. In the past, has Nintendo ever just ended up using the project name for the actual system?

No.  Both Nintendo's fans and the creators of the GameCube were pretty content with the name "Dolphin" for the GameCube, but it didn't happen.  N64 was Project Reality turned Nintendo Ultra 64 though, and I don't remember NES and SNES.  Don't quote me though, as I have been drinking a whole lot of sake, and it screws with my memory.

They should call it the Famicom in Japan. Famicom Advanced or Ultra Famicom? Something with the Famicom name in it is needed for Japan.

N5 is cool. It shows that Nintendo has been around long enough to have created five systems.  How many other systems can lay claim to that?  Ok, I will answer that one; NONE.  So it will show the consumer that Nintendo is here to stay.

"Sega Genesis... Sega Saturn... Sega CD... Sega Dreamcast... Any others?"

How could you forget the Sega Master System?  Though if you want to get technical the Sega CD is an add-on so it doesn't really count as a console.  If you count it you have to count the 32X as well.

I thought that Master System == Genesis.

Never being a Sega person, I didn't really follow the chronology of their system that well.  I knew the Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast well, but there were a whole whack of others in there I never found out about until years later.

It would be like asking a Sony person about the Virtual Boy or the Game and Watch I suppose.
